BACKGROUND: Corticotomy in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement, also defined as corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment (CAOT), is a promising technique that recently had many applications in orthodontics. AIM: The purpose of this study was to compare the use of piezoelectric surgery and conventional rotatory osteotomy technique for CAOT, determining the duration of surgery and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). PATIENTS AND METHODS: CAOT was performed in a sample of subjects, randomly choosing piezoelectric: surgery (PS Group) or conventional rotary osteotomy technique (RT Group). The duration of surgery was recorded and the oral health-related quality of life evaluated using the short form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) preoperatively, 3 and 7 days after surgery. t-test and Cronbach's alpha were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: 12 patients (mean age 14; range: 13-17) were enrolled. The time needed to complete the osteotomy cuts was greater (p = 0.1) for the piezoelectric surgery group (mean 34.3 minutes; range 35.3-32.6) than for the rotator group(mean 28.2 minutes; range 27.1-29.2). Oral health-related quality of life deteriorated from baseline (OHIP-14 mean: 6.33) to first follow-up, 3 day after surgery, in both groups (PS Group: 22.67 OHIP-14; RT Group: 21.33 OHIP-14). At 7 days follow-up there was a nearly complete recovery of the original OHIP-14 values, even faster with the conventional rotary osteotomy technique; however, no statistically significant differences were recorded between the two methods (p = 0.35). Cronbach's alpha values indicated an excellent internal consistency reliability. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical decision-making regarding the use of corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment, it should be aware of the expected decrease in oral health-related quality of life both using piezoelectric surgery or rotary osteotomy technique. In addition, the piezoelectric osteotomy requires a longer surgical time

In this book the author investigates the digital image proliferation of our times from an interdisciplinary point of view. Starting from the Visual Culture theoretical frame, Valentina Mignano explores the ways in which we interact with the screen, dealing with the "screen experience" in the first years of the network societ

Aortic rupture of acute aortic dissection type treated with thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR)

Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is one of the most frequent aortic emergencies, which occurs to the vascular specialist. Endovascular reconstruction of the true lumen using minimally invasive stent grafting or stenting has become increasingly popular and widespread among institutions. The aim of this paper is to report a case series composed by twenty-eight patients, who underwent endovascular intervention for acute type B aortic dissections complicated by rupture using thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR)

Il magnetismo animale in Italia al cambio di secolo. Tracce della trasformazione di una disciplina.

In 1784, the Marquis de Puységur (1751-1825) secretly published his first Mémoires illumi- nating about the discovery of magnetic somnambulism and leading the discipline to a new clinical horizon. The therapy introduced by Puységur, in contrast with his master Franz An- ton Mesmer (1734-1815), was characterised by the dialogue between magnetiser and patient through magnetic somnambulism. The strong crises that punctuated the course in the Mes- meric cure were replaced by sleep and dialogue, the centrality of body was replaced by speech. This method of therapy became conventional within a few decades, and already in 1815, the year of what has been called the rebirth of animal magnetism, magnetizers were tenaciously pursuing somnambulism in their patients. However, the path that led to the establishment of somnambulism was shaped by the coexistence of different techniques and influences, al- though historiography has often reduced this narration to an evolutionary transition between Mesmer and Puységur. Through the study of the Italian works on animal magnetism between the late 18th and early 19th century, it is possible to reconstruct this evolution, on which in recent decades more and more authors have dwelt, driven by the need to investigate a path of- ten reduced to the linear succession between first mesmerism and somnambulism. Thanks to the digitization of sources, one has access to several articles and books that were forgotten until recently. These manuscripts have made it possible to retrace a history of the dissemination of animal magnetism in Italy between 1784 and 1815 and to discover some of the dynamics of the circulation of the discipline hitherto unknown. The Italian case provides a better insight into the patterns of the discipline’s development at the turn of the century

Random Weights Neural Network for Low-Cost Readout of Colorimetric Reactions: Accurate Detection of Antioxidant Levels

The introduction of Point Of Care (POC) devices is revolutionizing the field of diagnostics, thanks to their ease of use, portability, and real-time results. However, despite such advantages, POCs are still less accurate than traditional laboratory-based methods. In most cases, this is due to the qualitative on-off response of POCs along with readout procedures involving methods that are easily influenced by the environmental conditions or by the acquisition step of the result. Automation of the readout using machine learning supported by frugal devices and lowcost sensing systems can significantly enhance the quality of the analysis performed by POC devices, while maintaining the aforementioned advantages. This paper proposes the use of random-based neural networks to accurately assess the salivary antioxidant level detected through a colorimetric reaction. As a test case, a low-cost IoT device equipped with a trained neural network that infers the antioxidant level in the user’s saliva was designed and tested. The experiments performed on real-world data confirm that the proposed solution outperforms the previously proposed readout strategy

From a Chemotherapeutic Drug to a High-Performance Nanocatalyst: A Fast Colorimetric Test for Cisplatin Detection at ppb Level

A rapid point-of-care method for the colorimetric detection of cisplatin was developed, exploiting the efficient conversion of the chemotherapeutic drug into a high-performance nanocatalyst with peroxidase enzyme mimics. This assay provides high specificity and ppb-detection sensitivity with the naked eye or a smartphone-based readout, outperforming many standard laboratorybased techniques. The nanocatalyst-enabled colorimetric assay can be integrated with machinelearning methods, providing accurate quantitative measurements. Such a combined approach opens interesting perspectives for the on-site monitoring of both chemotherapeutic patients to achieve optimal treatments and healthcare workers to prevent their unsafe exposure
