“The Tone or the Letter?”: Tommaso Landolfi as Translator of Russian Poetry between Renato Poggioli and Angelo Maria Ripellino

No full text
This article delves into Tommaso Landolfi’s evolving translation strategies in regard to Russian poetry, with a particular focus on the influence exerted on him by two Italian slavists and translators, Renato Poggioli and Angelo Maria Ripellino. During the initial phase of Landolfi’s activity, the profound influence of Renato Poggioli becomes evident. This is exemplified by Landolfi’s translations from the 1930s and 1940s, as well as the rigid prescriptions expressed in his reviews of books translated by others. Subsequently, Landolfi undergoes a phase of re-evaluation, as evidenced by his review of Ripellino’s ‘literal’ translations and, most notably, by his first volume of translations of Pushkin (Einaudi 1960). In this book, Landolfi explores a wide range of strategies, particularly regarding the metrical organisation of the texts, without adhering to one specific approach. Ultimately, in his last two books of translations, Landolfi successfully amalgamates the contrasting models of Poggioli and Ripellino, culminating in the development of his own distinctive strategy

Un ritratto critico dell'opera di Alessandra Carnaroli, autrice fra le più apprezzate delle ultime generazioni della poesia di ricerca. La sezione a lei dedicata, nel numero della rivista, contiene inoltre saggi di Cecilia Bello Minciacchi, Andrea Cortellessa, e Ivan Schiavone; e vari inediti dell'autrice. Il saggio è pubblicato con lo pseudonimo di Tommaso Ottonieri.A critical portrait of the work of Alessandra Carnaroli, author of the most appreciated in the latest generations of italian research poetry. Un traduttore molto visibile. Tommaso Landolfi negli anni trenta

The aim of this paper is to investigate a particularly relevant historical moment for the development of translation in the contemporary sense of the term, i.e. as a technically advanced editorial practice embedded in a system of book production that was about to become industrial. We are talking about the 1930s, a period that scholars call the “decade of translation”. In particular, we will observe the original translation posture of Tommaso Landolfi (1908-1979), investigating it starting from the comparison with his contemporaries (Leone Traverso and Renato Poggioli) and using critical categories such as the dichotomy between visibility/invisibility of the translator

Abstract 9386: Attenuation of Post-infarct Cardiac Hypertrophy by Allogeneic Cell-mediated Supplemental Igf-1 Propeptide Delivery

Background: Cardiovascular remodelling after myocardial infarction leads to cardiac function impairment due to left ventricle dilation, distortion of ventricular shape and mural hypertrophy. Therefore, ventricular remodelling can be considered a primary target for therapeutic treatment. We previously documented that cardiac-specific overexpression of the propeptide insulin-like growth factor 1Ea (IGF-1Ea) contributed to beneficial cardiac repair after ischemic damage by employing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant molecules, decreasing scar formation and enhancing cardiac function. The above benefits suggest that IGF-1 may be therapeutically important in cardiovascular diseases. However, the precise mechanisms in clinical-like procedures are not yet elucidated and IGF-1 family of growth factors are therefore poorly recognized pharmacologically. We hypothesized that IGF-1Ea-mediated delivery by allogeneic cell therapy could favour long-term decrease of left ventricle remodelling after myocardial infarction. Methods and Results: To support long-term expression of the propeptide IGF-1Ea, we infected pluripotent P19Cl6-MLC2vGFP cells with a lentivirus carrying the Igf-1Ea gene under the CMV promoter. These cells, which efficiently differentiate into cardiomyocytes activating a GFP transgene, were injected into the ventricular wall of C57BL/6 mice (n=11) after myocardial infarct induction in an allogeneic transplantation model. Mice injected with cells not expressing the transgene were used as control. IGF-1Ea delivery improved long-term local systolic function measured as percentage of anterior wall motion (60% vs 20%, p<0.01) and correlated with increased cell retention, decreased hypertrophic response through downregulation of the angiotensin signalling and activated pro-angiogenic program compared to mice transplanted with cells not expressing the transgene. Conclusions: this study indicates that allogeneic cell-mediated IGF-1Ea delivery is a good candidate in pharmacological and clinical studies to contribute to long-term beneficial remodelling of the heart in response to myocardial infarct

Outcomes of robotic surgery for inflammatory bowel disease using the Medtronic HugoTM Robotic-Assisted Surgical platform: a single center experience

Purpose The aim of the study was to compare the perioperative outcomes of patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who underwent surgery performed through laparoscopy or using the Medtronic HugoTM RAS. Methods This is a retrospective study from a prospectively maintained database comparing laparoscopic vs. robotic-assisted surgery for IBD from 01/11/2017 to 15/04/2024. All procedures were performed by a single surgeon robotic-naïve with a large experience in laparoscopic surgery for IBD. The robotic procedures were performed using the Medtronic HugoTM RAS platform. Outcomes were 30-day postoperative complications, operative time, conversion rate, intraoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and readmission rate. Results Among 121 consecutive patients, 80 underwent laparoscopic (LG) and 41 robotic-assisted surgery (RG). Baseline, preoperative and disease-specific characteristics were comparable except for older age (50 [38–56] vs. 38 [28–54] years; p = 0.05) and higher albumin level (42 [40–44] vs. 40 [38–42] g/L, p = 0.006) in the RG. The intracorporeal anastomosis was more frequent in the RG (80% vs. 6%; p < 0.001) with longer operative time (240 vs. 205 min; p = 0.006), while the conversion rate was not different (5% vs. 10%, p = 0.49). Surgical procedure types were equally distributed between the two groups, and the rate of intra-abdominal septic complication (IASC) was comparable across the different procedures. Postoperative complications were similar, including the rate of IASC (5% vs. 5%, p = 1), postoperative ileus (5% vs. 7.5%, p = 0.71), bleeding (2% vs. 5%, p = 0.66), and Clavien-Dindo > 2 complications (7% vs. 6%; p = 1). Conclusion IBD surgery performed using the Medtronic HugoTM RAS is safe and feasible, with similar postoperative outcomes when compared to the laparoscopic approach

A History of Aristocracies. Old and New Avant-Gardisms in Poggioli and Marinetti

This essay offers a close reading of Renato Poggioli's classic The Theory of the Avant-Garde, tracing more specifically the influence of Vilfredo Pareto's sociology on Poggioli's analysis of the early twentieth-century avant-gardes. Poggioli developed an approach to literary and cultural history based on Pareto in earlier work. By reading his Theory in tandem with that earlier work, we suggest that Poggioli's classic book points not so much to the innovative and innovating aspects of the avant-garde, as to the deeply conservative and 'aristocratic' roots of avant-gardism. Turning to the early work and career of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, which were firmly rooted in the field of French literature, we explore certain inconsistencies and problems in Poggioli's challenging Theory.status: Publishe
