    Complexity of Behavioural Strategies and Cooperation in the Optional Public Goods Game

    The problem of collective action where—beside the standard options of cooperating and defecting—there is also the possibility of opting out has been extensively studied through the optional public good game (OPGG). Within this and other social dilemma games, reputation systems, composed of a social norm—assigning reputations to agents—and a set of behavioural strategies using this information to condition their behaviour, are able to sustain cooperation. However, while the relationship between the complexity of social norms and cooperation has been extensively studied, the same cannot be said with respect to behavioural strategies, due to high dimensionality of the strategy spaces involved. We deal with this problem by building an agent-based model where agents adopt simple social norms, play the OPGG and learn behavioural strategies through a genetic algorithm. We show that while social norms which assign different reputations to defectors and to agents opting out achieve the highest levels of cooperation, the social norms that do not distinguish between these actions do improve cooperation levels with respect to the baseline when behavioural strategies are sufficiently complex. Furthermore, we find that cooperation increases when the interaction groups are small enough for agents to accurately distinguish between different behaviours

    Reputation and punishment sustain cooperation in the optional public goods game

    Cooperative behaviour has been extensively studied as a choice between cooperation and defection. However, the possibility to not participate is also frequently available. This type of problem can be studied through the optional public goods game. The introduction of the ‘Loner’ strategy' allows players to withdraw from the game, which leads to a cooperator–defector–loner cycle. While pro-social punishment can help increase cooperation, anti-social punishment—where defectors punish cooperators—causes its downfall in both experimental and theoretical studies. In this paper, we introduce social norms that allow agents to condition their behaviour to the reputation of their peers. We benchmark this with respect both to the standard optional public goods game and to the variant where all types of punishment are allowed. We find that a social norm imposing a more moderate reputational penalty for opting out than for defecting increases cooperation. When, besides reputation, punishment is also possible, the two mechanisms work synergically under all social norms that do not assign to loners a strictly worse reputation than to defectors. Under this latter set-up, the high levels of cooperation are sustained by conditional strategies, which largely reduce the use of pro-social punishment and almost completely eliminate anti-social punishment

    Youth in Conflict and Peacebuilding gives weight to the role of youth in peacebuilding, with specific reference to the processes of mobilisation, reintegration and reconciliation. Özerdem and Podder reject the pejorative notion of youth as a security threat, a notion that still pervades the literature and practice of peacebuilding. The main objective of this study is, therefore, to provide a new conceptualisation of youth as a harbinger of peace, whether at an international or local level. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach that identifies key themes in the analysis of its two main case studies of Liberia and Mindanao in the Philippines, this study maps out the debate surrounding the role of youth in post-conflict environments and draws from a wide range of cross-cultural examples. The failure to recognise youths as political actors can result in their contribution to peacebuilding being ignored, wasted and, at best, under-utilised. In recognising their agency as legitimate political actors, Özerdem and Podder address the need for a comprehensive understanding of their valuable contribution to peacebuilding

    Graph Properties in Node-Query Setting: Effect of Breaking Symmetry

    The query complexity of graph properties is well-studied when queries are on the edges. We investigate the same when queries are on the nodes. In this setting a graph G = (V,E) on n vertices and a property P are given. A black-box access to an unknown subset S of V is provided via queries of the form "Does i belong to S?". We are interested in the minimum number of queries needed in the worst case in order to determine whether G[S] - the subgraph of G induced on S - satisfies P. Our primary motivation to study this model comes from the fact that it allows us to initiate a systematic study of breaking symmetry in the context of query complexity of graph properties. In particular, we focus on the hereditary graph properties - properties that are closed under deletion of vertices as well as edges. The famous Evasiveness Conjecture asserts that even with a minimal symmetry assumption on G, namely that of vertex-transitivity, the query complexity for any hereditary graph property in our setting is the worst possible, i.e., n. We show that in the absence of any symmetry on G it can fall as low as O(n^{1/(d + 1)}) where d denotes the minimum possible degree of a minimal forbidden sub-graph for P. In particular, every hereditary property benefits at least quadratically. The main question left open is: Can it go exponentially low for some hereditary property? We show that the answer is no for any hereditary property with finitely many forbidden subgraphs by exhibiting a bound of Omega(n^{1/k}) for a constant k depending only on the property. For general ones we rule out the possibility of the query complexity falling down to constant by showing Omega(log(n)*log(log(n))) bound.     Local reputation, local selection, and the leading eight norms

    Humans are capable of solving cooperation problems following social norms. Social norms dictate appropriate behaviour and judgement on others in response to their previous actions and reputation. Recently, the so-called leading eight norms have been identified from many potential social norms that can sustain cooperation through a reputation-based indirect reciprocity mechanism. Despite indirect reciprocity being claimed to extend direct reciprocity in larger populations where direct experiences cannot be accumulated, the success of social norms have been analysed in models with global information and evolution. This study is the first to analyse the leading eight norms with local information and evolution. We find that the leading eight are robust against selfish players within most scenarios and can maintain a high level of cooperation also with local information and evolution. In fact, local evolution sustains cooperation under a wider set of conditions than global evolution, while local reputation does not hinder cooperation compared to global reputation. Four of the leading eight norms that do not reward justified defection offer better chances for cooperation with quick evolution, reputation with noise, larger networks, and when unconditional defectors enter the population

    A- and B-Subunit Variant Distribution in the Holoprotein Variants of Protein Toxin Abrin: Variants of Abrins I and III Have Constant Toxic A Subunits and Variant Lectin B Subunits

    The cytotoxic lectin abrin shows more than 30 variant forms (R. Hegde, T. K, Maiti, and S, K. Podder, 1991, Anal. Biochem. 194, 101-109). The lectin B subunit as cause for variance in abrins I and III was detected by a combination of one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis and Western blotting. Intriguingly, in abrin I but not in abrin III, association of a single A subunit with the variant B subunits shifts the holoprotein pI toward the alkaline side indicating that the subunit association involves neutralization of few negative charges. The B-subunit variants of abrins I and III overlap in their pI, and the A-subunit association gives the holoproteins a distinctness on isoelectric focusing gel. The results were also confirmed by analyzing the pH titration curves, These differences in the subunit association pattern between abrins I and III are in corroboration with the previously observed differences in the kinetics of protein synthesis inactivation and accessibility of the disulfide bridge to reducing agents in the presence or absence of putative receptor (R. Hegde, A. Karande, and S. K, Podder, 1993 Eur. J. Biochem. 215, 411-419). Further, the genetic origin of variance was confirmed by peptide mapping of the individual subunit variants, Considering a theoretical value of 0.1 to 0.2 pI/charge, a 15-17 charge difference could be predicted between the variants of two extreme pIs, The fact that the A subunits are not shared between the groups was taken to interpret that the protein synthesized as prepro form is processed posttranslationally and the processing takes place only after the disulfide bond formation between A and B subunits, The N-terminal 16 amino acids of A subunits of abrins I and III showed 26% dissimilarity. The A subunits of abrins I and III did not react with concanavalin A, indicating that the heterogeneity in the molecular weight is because of differential processing but not because of glycosylation

    This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
