Several sandstone outcrops, generally attributed to the Macigno Formation, were sampled in a wide area located between the Tyrrhenian coast and the Pratomagno-Casentino region. It includes the Calafuria, Piombino, Grossetano, Chianti, Pratomagno and Casentino outcrops. The age of the studied sandstones ranges from Late Oligocene to Early Miocene: these results are in good agreement with those from the northern transect (Cinque Terre - Val Gordana - Mt. Sillara) and the southern one (Castiglion Fiorentino - S.Sepolcro). The sandstone composition, in particular the Fine Grained Lithic Composition, allows to differentiate three petrofacies with decreasing volcanic grain content through time
