    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Short-term wind forecasting for the safety management of complex areas during hazardous wind events

    This paper describes the short-term wind forecast system realised in the framework of the European Project "Wind and Ports: The forecast of wind for the management and safety of port areas". The project[U+05F3]s aim is to contribute improving the safety and accessibility to the harbour areas of the largest ports in the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, which are frequently exposed to hazardous winds, in order to minimise the risks for users, structures, transport means, stored goods and boats within the ports. The short-term wind forecast system is based on a mixed statistical-numerical procedure, trained by means of local wind measurements and implemented into an operational chain for the real-time prediction of the maximum expected wind velocity corresponding to three forecast horizons (30, 60 and 90. min) and three non-exceeding probabilities (90%, 95%, and 99%). The local wind measurements used to train the forecast algorithms have been recorded from the 15 ultra-sonic anemometers installed in the Ports of Savona, La Spezia, and Livorno. This wind-monitoring network is used also to carry out the short-term forecast system a posteriori verification and validation

    Wind climate analysis in complex terrains

    This paper deals with the statistical characterization of the wind velocity in complex terrains based on the measured data from unevenly spaced long-term anemometric stations. Three crucial issues are considered: (1) the incompleteness or discontinuity of the long-term datasets and its effects on the statistical analysis; (2) the consistency of the data transfer procedure from a reference site to a target site based on numerical simulations of the wind fields; and, (3) the techniques to transfer and interpolate data from concurrent anemometric datasets to a target site. These aspects are discussed considering, as a reference pilot test case, the wind climate of five port areas in the High Tyrrhenian Sea, namely Genoa, Savona, La Spezia, Livorno and Bastia, studied in the framework of the European project “Wind and Ports

    The wind forecast for safety management of port areas

    This paper illustrates the research activities linked with the European Project ‘‘Wind and Ports: The forecast of wind for the management and the safety of port areas’’, which involves the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering of the University of Genova, and the Port Authorities of Genova, La Spezia, Livorno, Savona (Italy) and Bastia (France). The project is based on three tools, namely the historical databases, the global meteorological data and forecasting system, and the data provided by a wide seaport monitoring network that represents also the first product of the project. These tools are processed by a set of numerical models that represents the second product and the key tool to derive three further products, namely the statistical mapping of seaport areas, a medium-term forecasting system and a short-term forecasting system. A web-based GIS system is being realized to make the products of this project directly available to port operators, within a global system for a safe management of port areas. Downstream of these products, this paper provides some insights of the wide validation procedure that is going to be implemented to check and to improve the quality of the results. Further prospects for new research projects using the results of the Wind and Ports Project as starting point are also discussed
