    No full text

To Escape, to Return: An Homage to Sergio Pitol

    No full text
Background: This creative work responds to three central research questions: 1) how can the tools of creative nonfiction (eg. dialogue, narration, description) reinvigorate literary criticism? 2) how can I pay homage to Sergio Pitol, a man to whom my access is fragmented? 3) can a fragmented homage reflect what is remarkable about Pitol's masterwork, El arte de la fuga? Contribution: The essay combines techniques of creative nonfiction with literary analysis in order to create an affecting portrait of Sergio Pitol, along with a biographical context for one of his most significant books. Particularly important for readers outside North America, the essay provides an introduction to Mexican literature and, through an account of Pitol's life, argues strongly for the role of criticism in maintaining supportive literary communities. The essay is original in its combination of memoir, biography, literary criticism and travel writing. Significance: 'To Escape, to Return' was published on World Literature Today, which is one of the world's preeminent literary journals and the most important site for English-language writing on non-Anglophone literatures. Now in over 90 years of uninterrupted publication, WLT is one of the oldest continuously published literary periodicals in the English language. No Full Tex

Enrique Vila-Matas declares Pitol his master. Few contemporary Spanish writers have such close relations with Latin America and its work and they have been recognized with several awards at the other side of the Atlantic. If it is true that the author of Lejos de Veracruz demonstrated his literary proximity with several Latin American authors, this article examines his ties with Mexico through his friendship and literary convergences with Sergio Pitol. Travel made through the texts highlights the various connections between the Catalan author and his Mexican friend, both personal, as the textual nature. The study evidences the role played by Pitol in the configuration of the Vila-Matas narrative, as they portray each other within their fictions and the dialogue they establish

    No full text

As a discreet, if not a secret author, Sergio Pitol (1933-2018) was for a long time an almost invisible author in the field of Mexican literature, maybe due to his nomadism, since his first trip to Caracas (1953) and to New York after that (1956-1957), preludes to a seed travel to the Italy of his ancestors (1961), which was to lead in turn to a more than 27 years abroad. The article is about the model constituted by Sergio Pitol in the field of Mexican literature, for he was a writer who owned the Cervantes Prize in 2005, who took to the extreme both his life practice based on extraterritoriality (as a traveler first, then as a diplomat), and his writing practice, marked by the use of crossing borders, languages or genres (as a translator, since he translated more than 80 books, from five different languages to Spanish, and also as a writer, gifted in the art of crossing borders and hybridizing forms, between short story and novel, essay and fiction, reality and dream)
