Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Impact of wooden materials on hygrothermal conditions and perceived comfort in buildings : experimental and numerical study at the room scale
No full textLa présence de bois dans l'ambiance intérieure d'un bâtiment est souvent associée à un meilleur niveau de confort hygrothermique. Cette assertion, bien que largement relayée, peine à être étayée scientifiquement. L'objectif du présent travail de thèse est donc d'apporter des éléments de réponse.Une revue bibliographique aborde les trois axes structurant du sujet : les spécificités du matériau bois, le confort par une approche pluridisciplinaire et les transferts couplés de chaleur et de masse dans les matériaux poreux.Les campagnes expérimentales ont été réalisées dans une maison comportant deux pièces similaires : une pièce avec un lambris en bois brut et une pièce de référence avec des plaques de plâtre peintes.D'une part, une étude de confort, menée en partenariat avec un laboratoire de psychologie, a démontré que pour des conditions hygrothermiques similaires, la présence de bois dans l'ambiance intérieure n'influence ni la sensation thermique ni la préférence thermique mais qu'elle induit un biais cognitif se traduisant par une meilleure évaluation du confort.D'autre part, pour des sollicitations internes caractéristiques d'une occupation résidentielle, les mesures confirment que les propriétés spécifiques du bois - sa faible inertie thermique et sa forte capacité de sorption - permettent de lisser les variations d'humidité relative de l'air intérieur. Les conditions expérimentales testées n'ont cependant pas permis de mettre en évidence l'effet de la chaleur latente de sorption sur le bilan thermique de la zone. La différence de comportement hygrothermique entre une pièce en bois et une pièce en plâtre semble difficilement perceptible par l'être humain, dans les conditions testées.Une modélisation avec le logiciel Energy Plus complète le travail expérimental. L'emploi d'un modèle couplé (HAM) assorti d'une quantification précise des données d'entrée permet d'obtenir une prédiction fiable des conditions hygrothermiques à l'échelle de la pièce, y compris en présence d'un matériau très hygroscopique comme le bois, dans la majorité des cas. Le modèle de tampon hygroscopique (EMPD) fournit des prédictions correctes pour la pression partielle de vapeur de l'air mais rencontre plus de difficultés pour prédire le comportement thermique. Cela démontre l'importance de la prise en compte des transferts couplés dans les parois pour établir le bilan thermique à l'échelle de la pièce, en particulier en présence de matériaux hygroscopiques.Wood used in the indoor environment of buildings is often associated with a better hygrothermal comfort. This statement, although widely reported, is still not scientifically supported. Therefore, this work aims to provide some parts of the answer.A literature review focuses on the three main topics of this PhD : the specifities of wooden materials, comfort through a multidisciplinary approach and coupled heat and mass transfers in porous materials.The experiments were carried out in an experimental house with two similar rooms: a room with raw wood panelling and a reference room with painted plasterboards.On the one hand, a comfort study, conducted in partnership with a laboratory of psychology, demonstrated that for similar hygrothermal conditions, the presence of wood indoors does not influence neither thermal sensation nor thermal preference, but it causes a cognitive bias resulting in a better evaluation of comfort.On the other hand, for typical residential loads, the measurements confirm that the specific properties of wood - its low thermal inertia as well as its high sorption capacity - allow to smooth the variations of relative humidity of the indoor air. However, the effect of the latent heat of sorption on the heat balance of the zone could not be observed. The difference in hygrothermal behaviour between a wooden room and a reference room seems hardly perceptible by human body, for the investigated conditions.A numerical study with Energy Plus complements the experimental work. A coupled heat and mass model (HAM) with an accurate quantification of the input data gives, in most cases, reliable predictions at room scale, even with highly hygroscopic materials such as wood. The simplified moisture buffer model (EMPD) provides correct predictions of the water vapour pressure in the air but it does not decribe accurately the thermal behaviour of the zone. Therefore, it is necessary to consider a fully coupled model to evaluate the heat and mass transfers in hygroscopic materials to define the heat balance at room scale

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
