Sviluppo e test di sistemi, algoritmi e metodi per la validazione di smart object in applicazioni illuminotecniche e ambient assisted living
La presente tesi si focalizza sullo sviluppo di soluzioni innovative IoT attraverso Smart Object, finalizzati a rendere l'ambiente circostante intelligente.
Il progetto di ricerca ha l’obbiettivo di proporre una soluzione completa in grado di rendere più efficienti i sistemi innovativi in ambito industriale e domestico. I dati raccolti attraverso l’impiego di sensori, in grado di misurare le grandezze di interesse, hanno generato dei feedback che migliorano da una parte i processi produttivi e dall’altra il monitoraggio dello stato di salute di un soggetto, automatizzando azione correttive.
Nello specifico ci si è concentrati su due ambiti: la valutazione dell'affidabilità dei diodi ad emissione di luce (LED) per lo sviluppo di sistemi Smart Lighting ad alte prestazioni e lo sviluppo di sistemi innovativi per l’Ambient Assisted Living e Smart Living, con focus sul tema dell’invecchiamento e sulla misurazione dell’Età Biologica (BA) tramite sensori inerziali.
Per quanto riguarda il primo ambito l’attività di ricerca ha riguardato la definizione di protocolli sperimentali finalizzati alla valutazione dell'affidabilità e del tempo di vita dei LED impiegati nella realizzazione di sistemi Smart Lighting ad alte prestazioni. Attività sempre più importante negli attuali sistemi illuminotecnici finalizzati, non solo a fornire illuminazione, ma anche a far parte di sistemi di Smart Environment attraverso cui somministrare nuovi servizi. In particolare, le ricerche sono state concentrate sull’affidabilità del giunto di saldatura che, in seguito alla comparsa di fessure (cracks) e bolle (voids), è il fattore principale che influenza il tempo di vita di un sistema di illuminazione.
Per quanto riguarda il secondo ambito applicativo si è sviluppato un sistema di sensori indossabili, che è in grado di monitorare l'attività motoria, rilevando eventuali problemi nell'analisi del cammino e nella stabilità posturale. Dai risultati ottenuti nelle prove effettuate sul campo, il sistema assicura prestazioni analoghe rispetto al gold standard del settore. Visto gli ottimi risultati ottenuti dai dispositivi, questi possono essere utilizzati per il monitoraggio continuo dell'anziano al di fuori dell'ambiente ospedaliero in modo da realizzare sistemi Smart Health, sistemi di telecontrollo e telemonitoraggio.This thesis focuses on the development of innovative IoT solutions through Smart Objects, with the aim of making surrounding environment intelligent.The research project aims to propose a complete solution capable of making innovative systems in the industrial and domestic sectors more efficient. The data collected through the use of sensors, capable of measuring the quantities of interest, generated feedback that improves the production processes on the one hand and the monitoring of the health of a subject on the other, automating corrective action.
Specifically, we focused on two areas: the assessment of the reliability of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the development of high performance Smart Lighting systems and the development of innovative systems for Ambient Assisted Living and Smart Living, with a focus on the topic of aging and on the measurement of Biological Age (BA) through inertial sensors.
With regard to the first area, the research activity concerned the definition of experimental protocols aimed at assessing the reliability and lifetime of the LEDs used in the construction of high-performance Smart Lighting systems. An increasingly important activity in current lighting systems aimed not only at providing lighting, but also at being part of Smart Environment systems through which to administer new services. In particular, research has been focused on the reliability of the solder joint which, following the appearance of cracks and bubbles (voids), is the main factor affecting the lifetime of a lighting system.
As regards the second application area, a wearable sensor system has been developed, which is able to monitor motor activity, detecting any problems in gait analysis and postural stability. From the results obtained in the tests carried out in the field, the system ensures similar performance compared to the gold standard of the sector. Given the excellent results obtained by the devices, these can be used for the continuous monitoring of the elderly outside the hospital environment in order to create Smart Health systems, remote control systems and remote monitoring
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Biological age estimation using an eHealth system based on wearable sensors
The rapid worldwide aging makes necessary the development of advanced technologies for the objective identification of diseases and disabilities onset. Accordingly, we need to regard the biological age as an alternative and more reliable indicator of the physiological decline of individuals, respect to the simple chronological age. In this paper, we present an eHealth system for estimate the biological age of elderly people starting from the assessment of the frailty phenotype. The frailty phenotype evaluation is made possible using a standard protocol for data acquisition and a cloud application for processing and storing data. The proposed eHealth system is also equipped with wireless, small and non-invasive wearable sensors for an objective evaluation of the mobility of a subject. The eHealth system is tested on a reference population in order to have an amount of data necessary for defining a model to estimate the biological age. The use of the presented system on a reference population, and the availability of data regarding their mobility, allow the validation of the proposed model for the computation of the biological age via simple and objective frailty phenotype assessment
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
