Modulation by adenosine A2A receptors of dopamine-mediated motor behavior as a basis for antiparkinson's disease drugs
Several studies have evidenced the opposite role played by dopamine and adenosine receptors in the control of motor behavior. In line with those studies, we have previously shown that the acute administration of the A2A receptor antagonist SCH 58261 potentiated the turning behavior induced by L-DOPA in the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rat model of Parkinson’s disease (PD), suggesting that selective adenosine A2A receptor antagonists might be useful as adjuncts to L-DOPA therapy. One of the most important problems in the treatment of PD is to find a drug regimen effective after chronic administration and devoid of dyskinesia-like side effects. Previous studies have shown that the sensitized turning response, developed in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats after chronic intermittent L-DOPA, is a useful model of dyskinesia. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of a chronic administration of SCH 58261 alone or in combination with L-DOPA in 6-OHDA lesioned rats in order to verify the effectiveness of SCH 58261 after repeated administration and its dyskinetic potential. Repeated administration of SCH 58261 (5 mg/kg) did not produce tolerance to its ability to potentiate L-DOPA-turning behavior. Moreover, chronic intermittent SCH 58261 (5 mg/kg) plus L-DOPA produced a stable turning behavior response during the course of the treatment, whereas L-DOPA alone produced a progressive increase in turning behavior intensity and duration (sensitization). These results suggest that SCH 58261 is effective in potentiating L-DOPA-induced turning behavior even after a chronic treatment and it does not produce, in combination with L-DOPA, motor response alterations. A2A receptor antagonists could be a new and useful tool for the treatment of P
Interaction between dopamine and adenosine A2A receptors as a basis for the treatment of Parkinson's disease
The adenosine A2A receptor antagonist SCH 58261 increases the turning behavior induced by L-dopa in unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rats. In this study we have evaluated the effect of a chronic intermittent administration of L-dopa or SCH 58261 plus L-dopa on turning behaviour. Chronic intermittent administration of SCH 58261 plus L-dopa produced a stable turning behavior during the course of the treatment, whereas L-dopa alone produced a progressive increase in turning behavior. Moreover, repeated administration of SCH 58261 failed to produce tolerance to its ability to potentiate L-dopa-induced turning behavior. The results indicate that SCH 58261 is effective after chronic administration and suggest that SCH 58261 plus L-dopa, differently from L-dopa alone, does not produce alterations in motor responses during the course of the treatment
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Regione Umbria e AIPAI per la fruizione del patrimonio documentario
The Umbria Region has for a long time initiated an activity of knowledge and enhancement of sites of industrial archaeology, recognizing its importance for culture and the development of the territory and this work was also highlighted by the publication of several volumes in the series «Regional Catalog of Cultural Heritage of Umbria».
The verification of the consistency of the documentary heritage related to industrial archaeology in the region was the subject of an in-depth study carried out with the scientific collaboration of the Italian Association for Industrial Archaeological Heritage (AIPAI). The cooperation permitted to build a systematic database of the knowledge acquired so far, an essential prerequisite for designing and carrying out activities for the protection, conservation, and enhancement of this heritage. The report can be consulted on the institutional website (http://www.regione.umbria.it/...). At the same time, thanks to the systematization of studies and research carried out to date, the paper and digital archive of the documentary heritage of industrial archaeology of the Umbria Region is open to public viewing.
The scientific collaboration with AIPAI, moreover, has allowed continuing the activity of updating the database, and the identification of possible itineraries of industrial archaeology, real or virtual, for scholars and citizens accessible through the regional portal www.umbriacultura.it
Dopamine-dependent behavioural stimulation by non-peptide delta opioids BW 373U86 and SNC 80: 3. Facilitation of D1 and D2 responses in unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats.
In unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rats the ability of two non-peptide delta-opioid agonists, BW 373U86 and SNC 80, to induce motor asymmetries, alone or in combination with low doses of specific D-1 or D-2 agonists, was investigated. BW 373U86 and SNC 80 failed to induce motor asymmetries by themselves, but elicited contralateral turning after pretreatment with a dose of SKF 38393, a D-1 agonist, or quinpirole, a D-2 agonist, which per se did not induce contralateral turning. BW 373U86 also potentiated contralateral turning induced by threshold doses of quinpirole. Facilitation of D-1-dependent contralateral turning was associated with a potentiation of c-fos expression, as estimated by Fos-like immunoreactivity, in the dorsal caudate-putamen, particularly in its lateral aspect. Potentiation of D-2-dependent contralateral turning was associated with a reduction of c-fos expression in the medial caudate-putamen. It is concluded that stimulation of delta-opioid receptors facilitates the expression of D-1 and D-2 responses arising from the denervated striatum
Economic integration and vulnerability in the EU neighbourhood
In 2004, the EU launched the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), a unified policy framework towards its neighbours in the external EU periphery, aiming at strengthening prosperity, stability and security around its geopolitical borders. However, in-depth empirical analysis provides clear-cut evidence that, while the size and composition of trade flows between the EU and the ENCs may be growing, they are not favourable for the ENCs from the perspective of export diversification, in terms of either products or number of destinations. This condition increases their exposure to volatility in international markets. These results provide valuable insight into economic integration theory and for policymaking
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
