Use of supercritical CO2 to increase tocols content in barley extracts.

    No full text
In this work the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) for extraction and enrichment of tocols in barley extracts was investigated. Two different varieties of barley, Nure and Aliseo were utilized and working at “mild” conditions, 20 MPa and 40 or 60 °C, it was possible to obtain good tocols recoveries (from 60% up to 85%) and a product enriched in alfa-tocopherol and alfa-, beta- and gamma-tocotrienol, with specific enrichment factors ranging from 1.2 to 3.

Characterization of Extra-Virgin Olive Oils Produced in the Basilicata Region Based on Nutraceuticals Content

    No full text
Fifty commercial extra virgin olive oils were sampled from five different areas of the Basilicata region and were characterized for their content in polyphenos, tocols, carotenoids and chlorophyll, moieties that play a relevant role in the oil stability but are also important for their nutraceutical activities. The oils resulted to contain very good amount of these compounds and statistical analysis of the analytical data was also conducted by using PCA in order to assess any influence of the origin on the antioxidants composition and levels in the oils

Influenza di imballaggi commerciali sulla shelf-life e sulla qualità dei pomodorini cherry (CV Shiren)

In Italy tomatoes represent a very important segment of the fruit and vegetable production and among the different varieties cherry tomatoes are of increasing economic importance. Nowadays, thanks to the improved agronomic techniques, cherry tomatoes can be found on the markets throughout the year and consumers are showing an increasing preference for this kind of product. Furthermore, there is also an increasing scientifi c interest for the consumption of tomatoes, due to their content in antioxidants moieties (carotenoids, phenols, ascorbic acid, etc.), among which lycopene is of the utmost importance, also because its anticarcinogenic properties. At present, a signifi cant amount of the Italian production of cherry tomatoes is sold in foreign countries, often quite far away from the production sites; therefore, an adequate shelf-life of the product is needed, in order to reach the markets with no or minimal changes of the organoleptic characteristics. In this work, the infl uence of various commercial types of packaging on the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes was investigated. Shelf-life tests were conducted at 7° and 15°C (90% R.H.) using 4 types of commercial PP boxes and 2 fi lms, all available on the market, and the infl uence of the different packagings on the tomato quality was assessed taking into account chemical, physical and microbiological parameters such as: carotenoids and vitamin C content, °Brix, acidity, pH, color, presence of yeasts and moulds

Subcritical Water Extraction of Phenolics from Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) Byproducts

    No full text
Extraction of the phenolic fraction contained in artichoke leaves was investigated by using Subcritical Water, and the influence of water temperature and pH was studied over the range 110-180°C and 2.3-5.7, respectively. A significant influence of the extraction parameters was observed and the association of high temperatures and high pH had a negative impact on the extraction yields. Chlorogenic acid showed to be prone to degradation at higher temperatures and good phenolics extraction yields could be obtained at intermediate pH and temperature values, were recoveries of 50, 300, 120 and 30% could be obtained, for chlorogenic acid, cynarin, luteolin and apigenin

The Olive Oil Chain in the Basilicata Region

    No full text
A survey among the olive oil producers was conducted in order to assess the situation of the olive oil chain and identify the actual strength or weak points of the olive oil chain in Basilicata. The survey indicated that the olive growing is fundamentally characterized by a very fragmented supply, with a resultant low market penetration and a limited market power of the single producers. Oil production is still oriented to self consumption, and the oil production system is characterized by a low technology level, even if the mills are going through a slow but progressive technological update. Marketing opportunities are limited, also due to the small quantities of olive oil that the single producer can offer on the market, but there is the trend to move towards the use of marketing tools, such as PDO certification, that may valorize the typicality and the quality of the product

Recupero di nutraceutici da sottoprodotti dell’industria enologica mediante impiego di acqua allo stato subcritico

Wine industry represents one of the most important sector of the food industry and among the various byproducts grape seeds are of noticeably value because of their content in oil (14% b.w.), rich in linolenic acid and tocols, and also in polyphenols (58% b.w.). Actually, because of the polyphenols content, grape seeds extracts are sold with success as nutraceuticals, due to the wide spectrum of positive biological activities. However, the recovery of these moieties is nowadays based on the use of organic solvents, potentially harmful both for humans and the environment. In fact the technology requires an initial deoiling step with hexane, followed by extraction with a water/ethanol mixture. In this work the grape seed deoling procedure has been optimized by using supercritical CO2, while the recovery of the phenolic fraction has been investigated by using sub-critical water

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
