Performance design of the building envelope in Life Cycle Assessment evaluations
The research area of interest concerns the development of Life Cycle Assessment evaluations of building products and processes, focused on the achievement of guidelines useful in orientate interventions towards high levels of sustainability and energy efficiency, during their whole life cycle. In particular, the paper proposes a recognition of results obtained within several LCA evaluations on the building envelope components and aims to clarify the environmental impacts related to design assumptions that are different for the nature of the materials and the employed technologies, the expected performance levels, the usage and maintenance needs, the location in the territory, the reconfigurability potential during the time and the final disposal. The interpretation of these results identifies a scenario of the possible strategies for the design and the final building environmental improvement
Tale indicatore elabora e sintetizza in maniera chiara i risultati ottenuti dall’integrazione
A global review of MSC certification: Why fisheries withdraw?
The Marine Stewardship Council is the leader in seafood ecolabel certification. Despite its high impact in promoting sustainable fishing and securing price premiums, a large proportion of fisheries withdraw from the scheme during or after certification. We, therefore, investigate the factors influencing the likelihood of withdrawal. To achieve this, we analysed publicly available information from 301 fisheries that have embarked on the certification process using survival analysis methods to investigate the withdrawal rate. It was found that the fishing gear used, and geographical location were the principal factors affecting the likelihood of withdrawal and that the risk of withdrawal is greatest during the full-assessment process and the first five years of certification. Our study also reviews the uneven global expansion of MSC ecolabelling by region and identifies factors that influence withdrawal and need to be considered in fisheries entering MSC certification
Comparative LCA Evaluations between Conventional Interventions and Building Automation Systems for Energetic Requalification Activities
The aim of the research is to investigate how the use of building automation and control systems could represent a valid tool for the achievement of a higher level of energy efficiency in the existing building panorama. The project develops a sustainability evaluation of an Italian dwelling with technological and typological features of sixties-seventies buildings; two alternative efficiency strategies were compared. The first one, more conventional, consisting in the application of walls’ exterior thermal coat and substitution of existing windows; the second one, with the implementation of a specific building automation system for the management of existing components and building services. The results of the research, in terms of computer energy modeling and Life Cycle Assessment evaluations demonstrated by using the second option, described an higher potential in achieving a reduction in energy consumption during the use phase, together with a lower resources investment for the energy improvement goal
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A tool for the sustainability assessment of transformation activities of buildings
The aim of the research is the identification of a tool, defined “Index of Sustainable Transformability”, that
expresses, through Life Cycle Assessment evaluations, the adaptability level of buildings towards future
transformations and the reusability potential of its components. The work tested this tool in a case study,
developing a comparative analysis of the impacts of a residential building made with two different
manufacturing technologies (a dry layered and a traditional one) for which a reconfiguration has been
considered 30 years after its constructio
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
A new record of the invasive seaweed Caulerpa cylindracea Sonder in the South Adriatic Sea
The green alga Caulerpa cylindracea Sonder is one of the most infamous and threatening invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea. Since 1985, it started rapidly spreading to all Mediterranean regions causing many ecological changes on natural communities. In the present study, we present an example of this proliferation with the first record in the Marine Protected Area of Tremiti Island (MPATI) in the South Adriatic Sea. Fifteen sites along the coast and 5 different depths have been investigated. Our results provide eveidence of a wide invasion of this pest in three islands, San Domino, San Nicola and Capraia. This study fills a particular data gap in the ongoing biomonitoring of invasive seaweeds in the Mediterranean Sea representing a base line of this invasive species for the MPATI
