A comparative analysis of environmental discursive strategies: Joe Biden and Donald Trump

    No full text
This article presents a comparative discourse analysis of environmental rhetoric in the speeches of Donald J. Trump and Joseph R. Biden Jr., focusing on their contrasting approaches to climate change. Drawing on a small, focused corpus of eleven texts—including presidential speeches and electoral debates delivered between 2017 and 2022 – the study combines tools from discourse analysis and corpus linguistics to investigate how language constructs political stances, social identities, and ideological positions. Particular attention is paid to vocabulary (including “hooray” and “boo” words), grammatical structures (such as nominalizations and ergative constructions), and rhetorical strategies (metaphors, euphemisms, dysphemisms, and logical fallacies). Trump’s emphasis focuses on nationalistic, adversarial, and economically framed discourse, in which climate regulations are depicted as threats to prosperity and freedom, while environmental issues are minimized or reframed through euphemism. By contrast, Biden seems to employ a cooperative and institutional rhetoric, aligning environmental action with justice, responsibility, and global leadership, often invoking collective pronouns and legal-rational authority. The analysis demonstrates how similar keywords (e.g., “clean,” “jobs,” “freedom”) are strategically deployed to produce divergent ideological narratives. Ultimately, this study illustrates how environmental discourse functions as a site of political struggle in U.S. presidential rhetoric, where language not only reflects but actively shapes competing visions of economic development, environmental responsibility, and global governance

Public speaking in EFL postgraduatescourses in Italy: A case study with students of Political Science, University of Genoa in English Language Teaching, (Agosto 2020), vol. 13, n.8 CCSE

The teaching of soft skills in EFL postgraduate courses is increasingly part of the Italian university curricula, albeit with some delay compared to foreign universities. Postgraduate English language courses need to focus on the use of language in foreseeable situations by crea ting opportunities to use the la nguage in public contexts. Meetings, presentations, debates are the activities that yo ung people will increasingly be called upon to engage in. Rather than solely on theoretical knowledge learned previously, these activities develop the practical use of language, in front of an audience, with a structured discourse and with some emphasis on the non-verbal elements of communication. Although these aspects may appear daunting to students, more often than not, they have been able to overcome their anxiety, not only in relation to the embarrassment of speaking a foreign language in public, but even to the mere act of speaking in public, which represents an obstacle in itself. In this study a case of Italian postgraduate students of Political Science was carried out and analysed

Efficient and thermally stable BHJ solar cells based on a soluble hydroxy-functionalized regioregular polydodecylthiophene

A new regioregular polythiophene derivative, called poly[3-(12-hydroxydodecyl)thiophene] (PT12OH), was synthesized by post-functionalizing its ω-brominated precursor poly[3-(12-bromododecyl)thiophene] (PT12Br) prepared using the Grignard metathesis route. Thanks to the optimal balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups within its structure, PT12OH was highly soluble and easily filmable from common organic solvents allowing for its complete characterization. It also showed enhanced thermal properties, crystallinity, and self-assembling capabilities by the formation of strong inter- and intrachain hydrogen bonds. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells with PT12OH and PC61BM showed a PCE of 4.83% and a remarkable over-time stability, offering good photoconversion efficiency even after 120 h of accelerated aging. Indeed, the PCE decrease was 34% for the hydroxylated polymer and 65% for its brominated precursor. It should also be pointed out that the enhanced thermal stability of PT12OH was achieved without resorting to any complex post-annealing photochemical, thermal, or chemical treatment and was thus directly ascribable to the polymer chemical structure. The simple and effective synthetic procedure, photovoltaic efficiency, and enhanced stability revealed the potential of PT12OH for large-scale organic solar cell applications

Coco Rebecca Edogamhe: A Very Ordinary Girl

The work of Coco Rebecca Edogamhe (born 2001) is unique and relevant case study due to three interdependent factors: her young age and short acting experience, which allow us to observe the construction of professional narratives and practices from scratch; her debut in a leading role without prior acting training, which led her to interpret the set as a school; her identity as an Italian of Afro-descent, which places her at the centre of the debate on diversity and representation. While acknowledging her exceptional profile, she also makes a constant shift towards the notion of 'ordinary', proposing a nuanced and everyday model of celebrity, suitable for both television and digital media. Crucial to all this was the casting process, the debut during the Covid-19 pandemic, and her mirroring in the part of summer in 'Summertime' (Netflix 2020-2022). In this essay, press interviews and an in-depth dialogue between the author and the actress will interact diachronically to capture the main trajectories through which Edogamhe negotiated her public identity and began to build her professional culture

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
