Image spectroscopy for diagnostics and conservation of contemporary art
A non-invasive extensive method for the inspection of painted layers which is able to recognise alterations long before a trained eye is particularly useful in monitoring the state of conservation of modern works of art.
Multi-wavelength imaging may be applied so as to detect progressive alterations of contemporary art materials, measuring the reflectance spectra of the painting layers. The measurements may be performed by digital imaging, as they have been applied successfully for painting material recognition of ancient masterpieces.
A sequence of images of the painting is acquired and digitised in narrow spectral bands, from the Visible to the near-IR.
The reflectance spectrum of any detail is derived from the image sequence by a calibration procedure and suitable software. The same measurement is repeated, on the same painting, after a certain lapse of time.
The spectra obtained in succession are compared using multivariate analysis to detect any systematic deviation. Trends of colour alteration can thus be singled out for further investigation and/or conservation issues
Facilities for in situ diagnostics and monitoring of paintings
The laboratory of Archaeometry of the University and INFN of Ferrara in the last years has developed facilities suited for in situ diagnostics of Cultural Heritage. The more recent efforts have been applied on digital X-radiography and on macrophotography. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
