Cognitive abilities in the use of smart technology: Difference in life span

    No full text
Recently, the researchers' interest has been focused on the interaction between old age and smart technologies. Aim of this study is to investigate the critical factors that might determine and improve a successful ageing. In order to verify the modifications of information on elaboration competence in ageing, through the use of touch technology, we tested 125 subjects, divided in five age groups (Young, Junior, Adult, Senior and Elderly groups). A computerised experimental test was used in verbal and visual forms. The results showed that on visual form the Young group was faster than Junior group, whereas on verbal form the Young group was slower than the Adult group. These results highlight that the success in using smart technologies in ageing may be influenced by cognitive and emotional factors. © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd

Emotional pattern and body perception: cross-sectional study on risk factors for health management in young women

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate the adherence of girls and young adults to socio-cultural beauty models measuring the emotional patterns and behavioral attitudes of self-body management. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2163 Italian women between the ages of 15 and 25 (M=22.2, SD=2.11) distributed by Body Mass Index (BMI), measuring Body Satisfaction and Behaviour. RESULTS: A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted to examine differences in body satisfaction variables according to BMI and age showed significant effect of BMI group (p=0.001), but there was no effect of age group or an interaction; however significant differences have been evidenced in emotional pattern (p<0.001) and body management (p<0.007), as well as in the overall score for body satisfaction and behaviour (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Results showed that skinny girls feel positively about their weight and shape even if they did not manage to take care of their body adequately. Italian girls prioritize social acceptance rather their own wellness and lifestyle quality. Adherence to the thinness model is a strong risk factor that affects the perceived well-being of girls and young women, regardless of age

Recently, the researchers' interests were focused on the interaction between old age and e-learning, with the aim of investigating the critical factors that might determine the successful aging. In order to verify the modifications of information elaboration competence in aging though Information Technology. We submitted 125 subjects, divided in 5 groups on the basis of subjects' age, to experimental verbal and visuoperceptual tests, both computerized. The results showed that on visuoperceptual test the Young group was faster than Junior group, whereas On verbal test the young group was slower than adult group. These results highlighted that the successful in the use of e-learning may be influenced by cognitive and emotional factors in aging. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
