Peeter Saarna Oral History

This interview features Peeter Saarna, a member of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification and pastor of the Kansas City Family Church in Kansas City. Pastor Saarna discusses his personal background and experiences as a self-described rebellious youth, his religious development and eventual exposure to the Unification Church and the teachings of Reverend Sun Myung Moon, his experience being matched with his wife Mieko, and the importance of interracial marriage in challenging racism. I remember Hoover Village at Seabrook
In this "I remember" memoir, Peeter Vilms recalls his youth at Seabrook. Since most adults worked in the fields, children of all cultures at Seabrook were sent to nursery school and day camp. Vilms found that comraderie with his diverse peers allowed him to learn English and make friends very easily. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms

Beyond nostalgia: The exile publications of the Antwerp schoolmaster Peeter Heyns (1537-1598)
In 1585, the famous Antwerp schoolmaster, Peeter Heyns, fled from his hometown. After resettling in Haarlem, he published eight texts in the four years that he spent there. In all of them, the Antwerp background of the texts as well as their author is strongly emphasised. This article argues that the stress on Heyns’s roots as well as his hometown was part of a publication strategy designed to create both financial and emotional value by appealing to an interest in Antwerp shared by fellow migrants and the host community. This way of dealing with the past, using nostalgia not just as an emotional asset but also as a commercial one, sheds new light on the possible uses of nostalgic representations of the lost hometown by migrant authors

Con base en la concepción de traducción total, este artículo describe diferentes tipos de comunicación textual en la cultura. El cambio en la ontología del texto en la cultura contemporánea -debido a la posibilidad de coexistencia simultánea de varias formas de un mismo texto en diferentes medios y discursos- permite considerar a la cultura como un proceso de traducción intersemiótica. La intertextualidad, la interdiscursividad y la intermedialidad -como entorno de generación y recepción textuales- conducen a considerar los signos de diferentes textos como una intersemiosis, comprendida simultáneamente en el marco de diferentes sistemas de signos.The article proceeds from the conception of total translation describing different types of textual communication in culture. The change on text´s ontology in contemporary culture due to the possible simultaneous existence of various forms of the same text in different media and discourses allows us to regard culture as the process of intersemiotic translation. Hans Lõugas’ bachelor’s thesis Reflection of Estonia in Foreign Media in 2004 and 2005
Based on Eesti Päevaleht’s and Postimees’ Sections “Teised meist” (Others about us) aims to
throw light on two questions: (1) how Estonia was reflected in foreign media during these two
important years, and (2) how this reflection is presented to readers of two Estonian national
dailies.
It can be concluded, that Estonia’s reflection in foreign media is diverse. News are presented
on the one hand from close countries like Finland (but not other neighbouring Baltic
countries), on the other hand from big and globally influential ones like Germany, Great
Britain and USA. This is still limited by two factors: firstly, what languages are spoken in the
newsrooms of the papers that present the foreign media, secondly, which articles are more
easily attainable for the editors.
The texts published during the two years indicate integration to Europe, in the political as well
as the cultural sphere because Estonia is attractive in the region as a new member of the
European Union. Discourse reflects different modalities in foreign news, because Estonia’s
groundbreaking achievements in tax policy and information technology are presented side by
side with deep social problems and conflicts in international relations.
At first some theoretical and empirical background about the topic is given. Peeter Vihalemm
has rooted the conceptions of social space and the index of social proximity that help to
characterize Estonia’s social relations with other countries. This is important as this paper’s
emphasis is on the years 2004 and 2005 when Estonia joined the European Union.
Furthermore, Jan Ekecrantz’ work about Swedish media is presented. Ekecrantz has analyzed
the representation of the Other in Swedish newspapers and shows some common conceptions
of Estonia as the Other.
The work conducted by the author involves three research methods. To begin with,
quantitative content analysis gave a general overview of the section “Teised meist”. This
method allowed for the analysis of 800 texts published in 2004 and 2005. Secondly,
qualitative analysis gave an insight into the meanings represented in the texts. Finally, an interview with Eesti Päevaleht’s editor Kaarel Tarand threw light on the newsroom work
