    An IoT System for the Measurement and the Interpretation of the Photosynthesis-Related CO2 Fluxes

    The estimation of the CO2 concentration variations due to plants photosynthesis has become a topic of outstanding interest in view of evaluating the carbon footprint of greenhouses and farms. In this framework, distributed sensing solutions can be an alternative to expensive and power-consuming gas analyzers. In this paper, a low-cost sensor node thought for the accurate monitoring of photosynthesis-related quantities (i.e., temperature, pressure, water vapor concentration and CO2 concentration) is presented. The system is validated through measurement campaigns involving plants enclosed in an accumulation chamber in the presence of artificial light with controlled intensity, photoperiod and spectral composition. A simplified preliminary model is also proposed to interpret the obtained results from the point of view of the kinetics of the gas exchanges, achieving the estimation of the CO2 uptake and release rates ascribable to the plants activit

    Management of large prostatic abscess associated with urethral stenosis and penile cancer recurrence.

    INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this report was to analyze the management of a large prostatic abscess in a patient with urethral stenosis and recurrence of penile cancer, who had presented with acute urinary retention. METHODS: The clinical diagnosis was based on the end-fire transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) findings and later confirmed by CT. The patient had several surgical scars and radiation-induced effects in the lower abdomen, therefore the placement of a percutaneous sovrapubic catheter was considered hazardous. The placement of a transurethral catheter was impossible because of firm meatal stenosis due to previous penile partial amputation and growing tissue that suggested local recurrence of penile cancer. RESULTS: Transurethral placement of a 8 Fr catheter was possible under radiologic/ultrasound control using a hydrophilic glidewire. The definitive treatment also included percutaneous transperineal drainage and placement of a 8 Fr pig-tail drain under TRUS. Subsequent surgical treatment of the penis showed low grade superficial squamous cell carcinoma. Management and follow-up of prostatic abscess is based on TRUS imaging. After 4 years of follow-up, abscess recurrence was observed and treated with a urethral catheter and antibiotics. CONCLUSION: Urethral stenosis due to penile cancer is a predisposing factor in the development of prostatic abscesses. Placement of a bladder catheter and percutaneous drainage of the abscess are the mainstays of treatment. In malignant urethral stenosis, the conservative management of a prostatic abscess is safe and efficacious in a long-term follow-up. Transrectal US is a key instrument to guide intervention and to check results

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Ion current sensor for gas turbine condition dynamical monitoring: Modeling and characterization

    This paper aims to thoroughly investigate the potential of ion current measurements in the context of combustion process monitoring in gas turbines. The study is targeted at characterizing the dynamic behavior of a typical ion-current measurement system based on a spark-plug. Starting from the preliminary study published in a previous work, the authors propose a refined model of the electrode (spark plug), based on the Langmuir probe theory, that incorporates the physical surface effects and proposes an optimized design of the conditioning electronics, which exploits a low frequency AC square wave biasing of the electrodes and allows for compensating some relevant parasitic effects. The authors present experimental results obtained in the laboratory, which allow for the evaluation of the validity of the model and the interpreting of the characteristics of the measurement signal. Finally, measurements carried out in the field on an industrial combustor are presented. The results confirm that the charged chemical species density sensed by the proposed measurement system and related to the mean value of the output signal is an indicator of the ‘average’ combustion process conditions in terms e.g., of air/fuel ratio, whereas the high frequency spectral component of the measured signal can give information related to the turbulent regime and to the presence of pressure pulsations. Results obtained with a prototype system demonstrated an achievable resolution of about 5 Pa on the estimated amplitude, even under small biasing voltage (22.5 V) and an estimated bandwidth of 10 kHz

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Pervasive IoT Monitoring of CO2 for Smart Agriculture

    This study presents a flexible loT monitoring system suitable for gas sensing, applicable to the pervasive experimental assessments of C02 concentrations, particularly in relation to plant respiration and chlorophyll photosynthesis. Beyond C02 measurement, the system incorporates the monitoring of other parameters, among which those meaningful for chlorophyll photosynthesis, including light intensity and water vapor concentration. The system architecture, composed of flexible sensing nodes, builds upon a pre-existing model, enhancing its functionalities. Each sensor node integrates an MCU and hosts front-end electronics for six analog gas sensors utilizing various technologies. Preliminary tests embedded an electrochemical N02 sensor, an NDIR C02 sensor, and a BME280 sensor for measuring temperature, humidity, and pressure. To ensure accuracy, individual sensor calibration and a temperature-compensation procedure are applied on the edge. This monitoring system establishes a solid foundation for versatile applications, providing a valuable tool for research in the 'smart' agriculture field
