    Coherent coastal sea level variability at inter-decadal and inter-annual scales from tide gauges

    Coastal sea level measured from tide gauges exhibits coherent variability at interannual and decadal scales. We investigate sea-level variability of large geographic areas using annual mean sea-level values obtained from the longest available records of coastal observations. Eight sea-level regional indices are constructed for the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean basins. High coherency of sea-level variability at the decadal timescales between different oceanic regions is observed. The role of large-scale atmospheric forcing is then examined by comparison with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Strong correlation between the NAO and the second empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of the northwest Atlantic data set was observed. The second EOF is also significantly correlated with the latitudinal position of Gulf Stream and the Arctic Oscillation (AO). Sea-level changes in the northeast Atlantic are driven by the NAO. Correlation with the AO was also observed. In the Pacific Ocean, ENSO dominates sea-level variability along the eastern and southwest sides of the basin. ENSO signatures appear also in the southwest Atlantic, indicating teleconnection patterns. It is proposed that ENSO-related variability in this region is forced through the Pacific–South American teleconnection mechanism. The correlation between southwest Atlantic sea level and ENSO increased after 1980. Sea-level variability on decadal scales in the northwest Pacific region is influenced by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation.<br/

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Adaptation of an osmotically pumped continuous in situ water sampler for application in riverine environments

    We present the design of an osmotic water sampler that is adapted to and validated in freshwater. The sample is drawn into and stored in a continuous narrow bore tube. This geometry and slow pump rate (which is temperature dependent: 0.8 mL/d at 4 °C to 2.0 mL/d at 28 °C) minimizes sample dispersion. We have implemented in situ time-stamping which enables accurate study of pump rates and sample time defining procedures in field deployments and comparison with laboratory measurements. Temperature variations are common in rivers, and without an accurate time-stamping, or other defining procedure, time of sampling is ambiguous. The sampler was deployed for one month in a river, and its performance was evaluated by comparison with manually collected samples. Samples were analyzed for major ions using Ion Chromatography and collision reaction Inductively Couple Mass Spectrometry. Despite the differences of the two sampling methods (osmotic sampler averages, while manual samples provide snapshots), the two data sets show good agreement (average R2 ≈ 0.7), indicating the reliability of the sampler and at the same time highlighting the advantages of high frequency sampling in dynamic environments

    Exploring probabilistic seismic risk assessment accounting for seismicity clustering and damage accumulation: Part I. Hazard analysis

    Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), as a tool to assess the probability that ground motion of a given intensity or larger is experienced at a given site and time span, has historically comprised the basis of both building design codes in earthquake-prone regions and seismic risk models. The PSHA traditionally refers solely to mainshock events and typically employs a homogeneous Poisson process to model their occurrence. Nevertheless, recent disasters, such as the 2010–2011 Christchurch sequence or the 2016 Central Italy earthquakes, to name a few, have highlighted the potential pitfalls of neglecting the occurrence of foreshocks, aftershocks, and other triggered events, and pinpointed the need to revisit the current practice. Herein, we employ the epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model to describe seismicity in Central Italy, investigate the model’s capability to reproduce salient features of observed seismicity, and compare ETAS-derived one-year hazard estimates with ones obtained with a standard mainshock-only Poisson-based hazard model. A companion paper uses the hazard models derived herein to compare and contrast loss estimates for the residential exposure of Umbria in Central Italy

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
