Seeing the Light: Dante and the Perspectivist Theory of Light as Proper Visible
No full textThis study focuses on the role of light as the main object of sight in Dante's works. It proposes a summary historical reconstruction of Dante's tenet of light as proper visible (Convivio III, ix, 6), evidencing that this concept stands apart from the two prevailing optical theories followed at Dante’s time – namely the Neoplatonic extromissionist thesis of the emission of visual rays and the Aristotelian intromissionist thesis of the reception of forms in the eye. In both theories, colour alone is the proper visible. Instead, the idea that light is something sensed per se by sight stems within the context of the recent Western reception of Alhazen’s Perspectiva. Dante sticks to this principle since his early writings, and this, consequently, challenges his alleged early adhesion to the extramissionist theory. This study underlines that Dante was neither a scientist nor had scholarly interests in divulging new and original optical theories; instead, his adhesion to this innovative tenet of contemporary perspectivism was strategic to the employment of light, in the Commedia, as a potent source of gnoseological, theological, and poetic metaphors, some of which are cursorily presented as exemplification in the last section of the essay
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textIl presente studio indaga alcuni aspetti salienti che caratterizzano la nozione di infinito in Cusano in relazione ai concetti di forma e mensura, mettendoli in parallelo con testi di Roberto Grossatesta, il vescovo e filosofo inglese, noto al Cardinale anzitutto come commentatore e traduttore dell’opera dello pseudo-Dionigi, e, come Cusano, animato dal bisogno di interpretare la limitata comprensione umana dell’infinità divina alla luce dell’intrinseca natura misurante della mente. Prendendo le mosse dal primo sermone del Cardinale, che presenta una citazione esplicita da Grossatesta riferita alla nozione di forma come esemplare nella mente divina, il contributo esamina come nel pensiero dei due filosofi, la mente umana si configura come la più alta imago dei. Rintracciando poi ulteriori affinità testuali circa la nozione di mensura nella conoscenza della realtà creata, è inquadrato come la mente umana agisce nell’atto di misurare ponendosi quale criterio di misura di ciò che è misurato, e di conseguenza come essa riesca, pur imperfettamente, a cogliere l’infinità del numero nella mente divina, che misura infinitamente e perfettamente l’attualità dell’essere creaturale. Infine, l’ultima parte dello studio si interroga su come Dio sia inteso dai due filosofi quale primus mensurator e criterio assoluto di misura di ogni ente

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textIl contributo inquadra la storiografia relativa alla cosiddetta metafisica della luce, di cui il trattato De luce di Roberto Grossatesta costituisce un testo fondamentale. La tesi del presente contributo è che questo originale trattato cosmologico costituì un momento centrale nella riflessione sul problema della causalità naturale, nel complesso percorso di approfondimento della fisica aristotelica condotto dal filosofo inglese e risolto con soluzioni diverse nei suoi scritti. Lo studio anticipa i risultati di ricerca alla quale l’autrice è pervenuta realizzando una edizione critica del testo, in pubblicazione alla data di consegna della presente relazione.The contribution outlines the historiography of the so-called ‘metaphysics of light’, whose treatise ‘On light’ by Robert Grosseteste is a fundamental text. The thesis of this paper is that this original cosmological treatise constituted a central stage in the reflection on the problem of natural causality conducted by the English philosopher and solved with different solutions in his writings, in his whole course of study on the Aristotelian physics. The paper anticipates the results of the research which the author carried on during her preparation of the critical edition of the text, in issue on the date of delivery of this report
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
