Arts, University of Bologna. Salih’s research focuses on transnational
migration and diasporas across Europe, the Middle East, and North
Africa; Islam and gender; the Palestine question and refugees; and
trauma and conflict in the Middle East. She is the author of numerous academic works, including the book Gender in Transnationalism:
Home, Longing and Belonging among Moroccan (Routledge, 2003), and
the article “Bodies That Walk, Bodies That Talk, Bodies That Love: Palestinian Women Refugees, Affectivity, and the Politics of the Ordinary” (Antipode, 2017). Currently, she is working on a book on waiting and the politics of return among Palestinian refugees (Cambridge University Press). Ruba herself is the daughter of a Palestinian refugee from

No full textSonia Netto Salomão’s study examines the mechanism by which models - that belong to very specific cultural traditions - are transplanted and acculturated in post-colonial 19th-century Brazil. It focuses on Machado de Assis, an author who exemplified confrontation with the western canon, both ancient and modern, to illustrate how translations do not simply “transport” meaning. Salomão thus shows how a Shakespearean simile becomes a metaphor in Dom Casmurro, through a French eighteenth version. As she says, translations belong to diverse traditions and create other traditions, based on the reception of a given author’s poetics. She takes as a historical-cultural and theoretical backdrop a specific process within Brazilian culture, defined in the context of avant-garde Brazilian modernism as “Cannibalism”, and traces it back to the second half of the 19th century, demonstrating its power as a cultural paradigm

Get PDFThe Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU (January-June 2013) faced numerous challenges, not least of which was to negotiate the financial framework for the period 2014-2020 and the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy with the European Parliament, as well as the pressure to advance the banking agenda. Moreover, the fact that it was the start of a new Trio Presidency, the small size of the Irish administration and its fragile financial situation gave rise to some doubts as to how much it could achieve. Nevertheless, this post mortem on the Irish presidency finds that the Irish government approached the task with realism and optimism, a firm focus on results and the strong conviction that a good performance would enhance its reputation at home and in the EU. It is now for Lithuania and subsequently Greece, in the first half of 2014, to continue to tackle the remaining formidable challenges

Trayectoria hacia la inclusión: estudio longitudinal en mujeres en situación sin hogar en Madrid
Get PDFEn las sociedades desarrolladas, las personas en situación sin hogar representan la manifestación más visible del fenómeno de la exclusión social. Este colectivo además de padecer una gran desvinculación familiar y social, presentan importantes problemas de salud y grandes dificultades para su reinserción sociolaboral (Vázquez, Panadero, Martín y Díaz-Pescador, 2015). Entre las personas sin hogar, las mujeres que se encuentran en esta situación conforman un subgrupo especialmente vulnerable, con características, necesidades y trayectorias idiosincrásicas que, hasta la fecha, apenas ha sido objeto de investigación (Martín, Panadero y Vázquez, 2016). Probablemente debido a que las mujeres sin hogar suponen un porcentaje relativamente pequeño de las personas que se encuentran en esa situación –entre el 13% y el 20% según diferentes autores (Cabrera, 2000; Muñoz, Vázquez, Panadero y Vázquez, 2003; INE, 2012), apenas se han realizado investigaciones en relación al colectivo de personas sin hogar desde una perspectiva de género, lo que impide profundizar en aspectos propios de la condición de mujer relacionados con la situación sin hogar. De la misma manera, en los escasos trabajos longitudinales con personas sin hogar, dada a la alta mortalidad experimental en este tipo de investigaciones con esta población y el escaso porcentaje de mujeres en situación sin hogar, el número de participantes femeninos a los que se consigue acceder en los períodos de seguimiento resulta muy pequeño, lo que imposibilita la obtención de conclusiones específicamente centradas en las mujeres sin hogar (Panadero y Vázquez, 2012). Así pues, y considerando lo anterior, el objetivo general de este trabajo es conocer la situación y necesidades de las mujeres en situación sin hogar en Madrid y sus procesos de cambio desde una perspectiva de género, con el propósito de obtener información relevante que permita mejorar los programas orientados hacia las mujeres en situación sin hogar. Asimismo, este trabajo pretende proporcionar una visión general sobre las mujeres en situación sin hogar en diferentes ámbitos (caracterización del colectivo, sucesos vitales estresantes, historia y condiciones de vida, salud, consumo, etc.), conocer la situación de alojamiento a los 12 meses de la entrevista inicial y presentar la comparación entre las mujeres entrevistadas y no entrevistadas a los 12 meses de la entrevista incial
