Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Determination Of Heavy Metal Contamination Of Aliaga Bay’s (Izmir) Sediments
In order to investigate the heavy metal accumulation and distribution, the anthropogenic and geological factors that are likely to cause pollutionin the marine sediments of the Aliaga Bay, which is located in Aegean Sea and surrounded by intensive industrial activities, 3 gravity cores and 15 surface sediments were taken from the sea with MTA Selen Research Ship. Geochemical (Fe, Al, Zn, Mn, As, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Mo, V), mineralogical, grain size, carbon and manyetic susceptibility analysis were performed on the samples and the relationship between the parameters were investigated using statistical methods. In order to determine the possible pollution levels in sediments, by using the world average shale metal concentrations as backgroundvalues, Enrichment Factor (Ef), Geo-accumulation Index, Contamination Factor (Cf) and Pollution Load Index (PLI) were calculated. According to Ef values, while surface samples showed values reaching up to significant enrichment values for Mo and they showed minimum and moderate enrichment for As and Pb. For other metals, there was a minimum enrichment in the samples. According to the Igeo values, the surface samples showed values reachig up to moderate pollution values for Mo, whereas values for As and Pb showed unpolluted and from unpolluted to moderately polluted classes. For the other metals, samples were in the unpolluted class. According to the Cf values, while surface samples showed moderate and significant contamination for Mo, they all showedmoderate contamination for Pb, and low and moderate contamination for As and Cr. According to PLI values, the surface sediments were in unpolluted class. Core samples showed values reaching up to moderate enrichment values for As, Pb and Mo according to Ef values. According to the Igeo values, only in AKRT 01 core, values reaching up to moderate pollution for Pb and Mo were seen, for As, all cores showed unpolluted and from unpolluted to moderately polluted classes. While it is possible to relate the high metal values obtained in the western part of the bay with the ship dismantling facilities and refinery, it is possible to relate the values measured on the eastern side of the bay exit, with the materials carried by Güzelhisar Creek where industrial and domestic wastes are discharged. The fact that As and Pb contents of the volcanic rocks in the Aliağa region are relatively high compared to the average crust values and that the thermal waters in the region contain high As indicate that the geological effect is also important in the region. In addition, heavy metals generally show a positive correlation with TOC, silt and clay content, whereas sand and gravel content generally show a negative correlation, indicating that heavy metals are retained by fine-grained sediments and organic materials.Ege Denizi’nde yer alan ve yoğun endüstriyel faaliyetlerin çevrelediği Aliağa Körfezi’nin deniz sedimanlarında ağır metal birikiminin ve yayılımının, kirliliğe sebep olması muhtemel antropojenik ve jeolojik faktörlerin araştırılması amacıyla MTA Selen Araştırma Gemisi ile deniz içinden 3 adet gravite karot ve 15 adet yüzey sediman örneği alınmıştır. Sedimanlarda olası kirliliğin derecesinin tespiti için dünya ortalama şeyl metal konsantrasyon değerleri, temel değerler olarak kullanılarak Zenginleşme Faktörü (Ef), Jeobirikim İndeksi (Igeo), Kirlilik Faktörü (Cf) ve Kirlilik Yükü İndeksi (PLI) hesaplanmıştır. Ef değerlerine göre yüzey örnekleri, Mo için önemli derecede zenginleşmeye varan değerler gösterirken As ve Pb için minumum ve orta derecede zenginleşme göstermiştir. Diğer metaller için ise örneklerde minumum düzeyde zenginleşme söz konusudur. Igeo değerlerine göre yüzey örnekleri, Mo için orta derecede kirlenmeye varan değerler gösterirken As ve Pb için kirlenmemiş ve kirlenmeye başlamış sınıflarını gösteren değerler almıştır. Örnekler, diğer metaller için ise kirlenmemiş sınıfındadır. Cf değerlerine göre yüzey örnekleri, Mo için orta ve önemli derecede kirlenme gösterirken Pb için tüm örneklerde orta derecede kirlenme, As ve Cr için az ve orta derecede kirlenme göstermiştir. PLI değerlerine göre yüzey örnekleri, kirlenmemiş sınıfındadır. Karot örnekleri ise Ef değerlerine göre As, Pb ve Mo için orta derecede zenginleşmeye varan değerler göstermiştir. Igeo değerlerine göre ise sadece AKRT 01 karotunda Pb ve Mo için orta derecede kirliliğe varan değerler görülürken, As için tüm karotlar kirlenmemiş ve kirlenmeye başlamış sınıflarını göstermektedir. Körfezin batı kesiminde elde edilen yüksek metal değerlerini gemi söküm ve rafineri ile ilişkilendirmek mümkün iken körfez çıkışının doğu tarafında ölçülen değerleri endüstriyel ve evsel atıkların deşarj edildiği Güzelhisar Deresi’nin taşıdığı malzemelerle ilişkilendirmek mümkündür. Aliağa bölgesindeki volkanik kayaçların As ve Pb içeriklerinin ortalama kabuk değerleri ile karşılaştırıldıklarında görece yüksek olması ve özellikle bölgedeki termal suların yüksek As içermesi bölgede jeolojik etkinin de önemli olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca ağır metallerin TOK, silt ve kil içeriği ile genellikle pozitif bir korelasyon gösterirken kum ve çakıl içeriği ile genellikle negatif bir korelasyon göstermesi ağır metallerin ince taneli sedimanlar ve organik maddelerce tutulduğunu işaret etmektedir
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
