Written Out : The Silencing of Regina Gelana Twala

    No full text
Systemic racism and sexism caused one of South Africa’s most important writers to disappear from public consciousness. Is it possible to justly restore her historical presence?Regina Gelana Twala, a Black South African woman who died in 1968 in Swaziland (now Eswatini), was an extraordinarily prolific writer of books, columns, articles, and letters. Yet today Twala’s name is largely unknown. Her literary achievements are forgotten. Her books are unpublished. Her letters languish in the dusty study of a deceased South African academic. Her articles are buried in discontinued publications.Joel Cabrita asserts that Twala’s posthumous obscurity has not developed accidentally as she exposes the ways prejudices around race and gender blocked Black African women like Twala from establishing themselves as successful writers. Drawing upon Twala’s family papers, interviews, newspapers, and archival records from Pretoria, Uppsala, and Los Angeles, Cabrita argues that an entire cast of characters—censorious editors, territorial White academics, apartheid officials, and male African politicians whose politics were at odds with her own—conspired to erase Twala’s legacy. Through her unique documentary output, Twala marked herself as a radical voice on issues of gender, race, and class. The literary gatekeepers of the racist and sexist society of twentieth-century southern Africa clamped down by literally writing her out of the region’s history.Written Out also scrutinizes the troubled racial politics of African history as a discipline that has been historically dominated by White academics, a situation that many people within the field are now examining critically. Inspired by this recent movement, Cabrita interrogates what it means for her—a White historian based in the Northern Hemisphere—to tell the story of a Black African woman. Far from a laudable “recovery” of an important lost figure, Cabrita acknowledges that her biography inevitably reproduces old dynamics of White scholarly privilege and dominance. Cabrita’s narration of Twala’s career resurrects it but also reminds us that Twala, tragically, is still not the author of her own life story. Proceedings of the 2005 ERCOFTAC International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements; ETMM6, 23–25 May Sardinia, ItalyThe fountain flow created by two underexpanded axisymmetric, turbulent jets impinging on a ground plane was studied through the use of laser-based experimental techniques. Velocity and turbulence data were acquired in the jet and fountain flow regions using laser doppler velocimetry and particle image velocimetry. Profiles of mean and rms velocities along the jet centreline are presented for nozzle pressure ratios of two, three and four. The unsteady nature of the fountain flow was examined and the presence of large-scale coherent structures identified. A spectral analysis of the fountain flow data was performed using the Welch method. The results have relevance to ongoing studies of the fountain flow using large eddy simulation techniques

Protein folding on the ribosome studied using NMR spectroscopy

    No full text
NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the investigation of protein folding and misfolding, providing a characterization of molecular structure, dynamics and exchange processes, across a very wide range of timescales and with near atomic resolution. In recent years NMR methods have also been developed to study protein folding as it might occur within the cell, in a de novo manner, by observing the folding of nascent polypeptides in the process of emerging from the ribosome during synthesis. Despite the 2.3 MDa molecular weight of the bacterial 70S ribosome, many nascent polypeptides, and some ribosomal proteins, have sufficient local flexibility that sharp resonances may be observed in solution-state NMR spectra. In providing information on dynamic regions of the structure, NMR spectroscopy is therefore highly complementary to alternative methods such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, which have successfully characterized the rigid core of the ribosome particle. However, the low working concentrations and limited sample stability associated with ribosome-nascent chain complexes means that such studies still present significant technical challenges to the NMR spectroscopist. This review will discuss the progress that has been made in this area, surveying all NMR studies that have been published to date, and with a particular focus on strategies for improving experimental sensitivity

Systematic mapping of free energy landscapes of a growing filamin domain during biosynthesis

Cotranslational folding (CTF) is a fundamental molecular process that ensures efficient protein biosynthesis and minimizes the formation of misfolded states. However, the complexity of this process makes it extremely challenging to obtain structural characterizations of CTF pathways. Here, we correlate observations of translationally arrested nascent chains with those of a systematic C-terminal truncation strategy. We create a detailed description of chain length-dependent free energy landscapes associated with folding of the FLN5 filamin domain, in isolation and on the ribosome, and thus, quantify a substantial destabilization of the native structure on the ribosome. We identify and characterize two folding intermediates formed in isolation, including a partially folded intermediate associated with the isomerization of a conserved cis proline residue. The slow folding associated with this process raises the prospect that neighboring unfolded domains might accumulate and misfold during biosynthesis. We develop a simple model to quantify the risk of misfolding in this situation and show that catalysis of folding by peptidyl-prolyl isomerases is sufficient to eliminate this hazard. Nelson Werneck Sodré (1911-1999) has an important participation at the brazilian press, through the publication of articles at sever al newspapers in different states from Brazil between 1924 and 1999. According to the author, what defines the brazilian press, at present, is the distance from the poor class reality, and your quality of a big capitalist company, becoming an important domination object. The Brazilian Press History book focused two subjects: national culture and democracy. The purpose of this master dissertation project is to check the Nelson Werneck Sodrés position to this two subjects, through the analysis from books and articles written for the press

The universal soul under the liberation of writing. Theoretical-practical demonstration of the unit of meaning of the literary work edited and unpublished by Natália Correia. The work we have carried out was aimed, above all, at naming the unity of mean-ing of the editable and unpublished work of Natália Correia. To demonstrate our thesis, we have recourse to all the published and unpublished works of Natália, included in its estate that remains in the National Library of Lisbon and in the Municipal Library and Ar-chives of Ponta Delgada, to apprehend the way Natália Correia built and at the same time defended its primary objective: to harmonize non-consonant parts. We start from a theoretical foundation of the significant terms: soul, unity, writ-ing. Defined each one of them, we were in possession of a set of information, that allowed us to enter the literary work by Natália Correia. We then establish a method of intensive reading and analysis, to refer to all the demonstrative examples of the unity of meaning. We referred to several themes: women; love and eroticism; universal and absolute soul; freedom and liberation; unity and androg-yny. And for each of the themes highlighted, we show examples of the work of Natália Correia. Between texts in prose and in verse, we could define the same conjugation of ideals: unity and fraternity. This led us to conclude that the entire literary life of the author under study has come together cumulatively to the definition of an ideal parallel world. In this the culture will have exponential importance, in its revolutionary margin. Being this revolution, especially interior, with a subjective and spiritual consolidation. We recognize that Natália Correia ran without detours, even doubts, for a reu-niting show, in all possible plans of her experience: individual, political and social. Out of all these plans, the entire work of the author resulted. We conclude that Natália Correia does not conceal its intentionality (intimistic revolution), but rather it does exponentiate a set of confirmatory data of our thesis: unity of sense between edited and not edited work

Investigation of the benefits of a parallel-hybrid electric architecture in NOx,CO and H2O emissions in the LTO cycle for regional turboprop

Air traffic is expected to grow in the next decades, and with it, aircraft emissions are likely to increase. Hybrid-electric propulsion has been investigated as a concept that could address this problem by potentially bring fuel-saving and emissions reduction. This research assesses whether an electrically assisted regional turboprop aircraft could reduce exhaust emission gases in the LTO cycle. A mission analysis routine was developed to estimate the aircraft's performance throughout a 1000 Km mission. Moreover, it was built a turboprop engine model that computes accurate engine performance and a simplified electrical system model to estimate its weight with the power requirements. The degree of hybridization (percentage of electric power provided) was varied from 10 to 100 % and the battery specific energy from 300 to 1000 Wh/kg in the simulations. The performance and emissions of an ATR72-600 were compared to the electrically assisted versions, and the impacts of hybridization were outlined.Aerospace Engineerin
