    The Responsibility to Protect: Norms, Laws and the Use of Force in International Politics

    This volume is a collection of the key writings of Professor Ramesh Thakur on norms and laws regulating the international use of force. The adoption of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle by world leaders assembled at the UN summit in 2005 is widely acknowledged to represent one of the great normative advances in international politics since 1945. The author has been involved in this shift from the dominant norm of non-intervention to R2P as an actor, public intellectual and academic and has been a key thinker in this process. These essays represent the author's writings on R2P, including reference to test cases as they arose, such as with Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar in 2008. Comprising essays by a key thinker and agent in the Responsibility to Protect debates, this book will be of much interest to students of international politics, human rights, international law, war and conflict studies, international security and IR in general

    We demonstrate a pulse sequence using symmetry-based rotor-synchronised sequences for homonuclear dipolar decoupling that achieves pure absorption phase high-resolution 1H spectra in solid-state NMR. This sequence is compared with the phase-modulated Lee-Goldburg scheme. Experimental results are shown for samples of glycine and l-histidine·HCl·H2O for magic-angle-spinning frequencies in the range of 14–30 kHz and at two different magnetic fields.<br/

Savant Thakur is first author on ‘HSP70 drives myoblast fusion during C2C12 myogenic differentiation’, published in BiO. Savant was a Ph.D. student in the lab of Professor Gordon S. Lynch at the Centre for Muscle Research, Department of Physiology, The University of Melbourne, working towards understanding the mechanisms of defective muscle repair in muscle diseases and wasting disorders. Sadly, Savant passed away on June 16, 2019 and so one of his supervisors, Professor Lynch, spoke to BiO about Savant's work and character

Improved the general presentation of the paperInternational audienceIn this paper we study the behavior of the function omega of Anderson-Thakur evaluated at the elements of the algebraic closure of the finite field with q elements F_q. Indeed, this function has quite a remarkable relation to explicit class field theory for the field K=F_q(T). We will see that these values, together with the values of its divided derivatives, generate the maximal abelian extension of K which is tamely ramified at infinity. We will also see that omega is, in a way that we will explain in detail, an universal Gauss-Thakur sum. We will then use these results to show the existence of functional relations for a class of L-series introduced by the second author. Our results will be finally applied to obtain a new class of congruences for Bernoulli-Carlitz fractions, and an analytic conjecture is stated, implying an interesting behavior of such fractions modulo prime ideals of A=F_q[T]

    Medicinal plants are a source of great economic value all over the world. Various medicinal plants have been used for years in daily life to treat diseases. Present study illustrates the phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of Pinda concanensis (Dalzell) P.K. Mukh. &amp; Constance. The selected plant Fruits were collected and powdered. The bioactive compounds were extracted by using Methanol, Ethanol, Petroleum ether and water in a soxhlet extractor. The antimicrobial activity was determined by using agar disc and well diffusion method. Acetone and chloroform extracts were mixed with 1ml diethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and added into the well. The extract of Methanol with Pinda concanensis (Dalzell) P.K. Mukh. &amp; Constance has shown maximum zone of inhibition against bacterial pathogens when compared to chloral and water extract. Phytochemical analysis reflected the antimicrobial activity of Pinda concanensis (Dalzell) P.K. Mukh. &amp; Constance which is due to the presence of phytochemical compounds like alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, Saponins, Phenolic compounds and tannins. The results of agar well diffusion method indicated the inhibition and it depends largely upon plant parts used and organism tested.</jats:p

    The use of SARAL/AltiKa altimeter measurements for multi-site hydrodynamic model validation and rating curves estimation: An application to Brahmaputra River

    Hydrodynamic (HD) modelling in data sparse region represents a challenge due to poor hydrological and topographic data availability. Recently, remote sensing techniques offer additional data that may help to improve the reliability and accuracy of such analysis. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the potential and added value of altimeter measurements for multi-site validation of the HD model and constructed rating curves (RCs) in a sparsely gauged Brahmaputra River, India. The HD model (MIKE 11) was developed for a Brahmaputra River stretch of 135 km, between Tezpur and Guwahati, where 4 ground-tracks of the SARAL/AltiKa (the first Ka band altimeter mission) cross the river. The Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between HD model based water level and in-situ water level during calibration (January-October 2013) and validation (January-March 2014) was found to be 0.93 and 0.79 respectively. Calibrated and validated HD model was used to simulate water level and build rating curves at virtual stations. The bias correction (7.2 cm to 9.5 cm) was applied to the altimetry measurements before comparison with the modelled water levels. The root mean square error (RMSE) ranging between 15 cm and 42 cm was observed between the modelled and altimetry-derived water level at all the virtual stations, indicating the potential of satellite altimetry for multi-site validation of the HD model (inline with previous studies) and validation of the constructed RCs. The availability of RCs at virtual stations allows the expansion of the gauging network along the Brahmaputra River, thus enabling the estimation of the discharge at additional locations and the potential evaluation of the contributions of lateral tributaries could be evaluated in future work
