Aqueous-phase hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions catalyzed by a new water-soluble [rhodium]-thioligand complex
Rh(DHTANa) is a new water-soluble catalyst easily obtained by mixing in water the catalytic precursor [Rh(COD)Cl](2) and the dihydrothioctic acid sodium salt (DHTANa). This catalyst showed to be very active in the hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates as 2-cyclohexen-1-one, the biomass-derived furfural and acetophenone. In this last case the catalytic system obtained by using as water-soluble ligand (R)-(DHTANa) afforded (R)-1-phenylethanol with very modest enantioselectivity. Rh(DHTANa) was active also in the aqueous biphase hydroformylation of styrene producing exclusively the two corresponding aldehydes with 80-86% selectivity toward the branched aldehyde 2-phenylpropanal. This new catalytic system was easily recycled in both hydrogenation and hydroformylation processes and no leaching phenomenon was observed
A new treatment regimen with permethrin in scabies
BACKGROUND: Topical permethrin, applied once daily, is considered as the most effective treatment in scabies.
METHODS: Eighty-nine adult immunocompetent patients with scabies were treated with 5% permethrin cream: 42 patients were treated with a single application/day (group I); 47 patients were treated with one application/day for two consecutive days (group II). Clinical diagnosis of scabies was confirmed by microscopical examinations. The cream was stored in refrigerator and applied cold on the entire skin surface. The cream was left on the skin for 24 hours. No other topical or systemic drugs were allowed, except for a cleanser with chlorhexidine. The treatment was repeated in all patients 7-10 days later. Follow up length was two months after the end of the treatment.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients (61.8%) in the group I and 34 patients (87.2%) in the group II were considered recovered both clinically and microscopically. Three patients (7.1%) in the group I and 4 patients (10.2%) in the group II developed a mild irritant contact dermatitis. During follow-up, three patients (7.1%) in the group I and two patients (4.2%) in the group II developed a recurrence or a re-infestation.
CONCLUSIONS: Five per cent permethrin, when applied as cold cream, on the entire skin surface, once daily for two consecutive days, is more effective than the single application in adult immunocompetent patients with scabies
Tinea Imbricata in an Italian Child and Review of the Literature
Tinea imbricata is a chronic superficial mycosis caused by Trichophyton concentricum. It is characterized by widespread, annular, concentric, squamous lesions. Tinea imbricata is endemic in three geographical areas: Southwest Pacific, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. Tinea imbricata in travelers returning from endemic areas is exceptionally rare. We report a case of tinea imbricata in an Italian child who acquired the infection during a trip to Solomon Islands. Three cultures were positive for T. concentricum. The patient was successfully treated with griseofulvin and terbinafine cream
Nasal polyps : A predisposing factor for cutaneous leishmaniasis of the lips?
Objectives: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) of the lips is rare. This study was conducted to investigate findings in patients with this condition. Methods: From 2007 to date, we observed 10 patients (nine males and one female), with a median age of 45.2 years (range: 8-77 years), with CL of the lips. Results: Six of the 10 patients suffered from nasal polyps, three from bronchial asthma, and one from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Three of the patients with nasal polyps also had asthma. Three patients had none of nasal polyps, asthma, or COPD. In all patients with nasal polyps, diagnosis was confirmed by anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy. Conclusions: It is possible that, in patients with nasal polyps, asthma, and COPD, the need to breathe through the mouth rather than the nose facilitates the sting by sandflies. Subjects with nasal polyps living in areas endemic for CL should be warned about the risk for being stung by sandflies on the lips, in addition to other uncovered areas
The association of isoconazole-diflucortolone in the treatment of pediatric tinea corporis
Background: Tinea corporis is a common mycotic infection in children. Staphylococcus aureus superinfections may be observed in atopic children with tinea corporis suffering from severe pruritus and consequent scratching. Objective: From 2006 to 2011, we observed 288 children with mycologically proven tinea corporis. In 39 of them (13.5%) tinea corporis was superinfected by S. aureus: all these children were affected by atopic dermatitis. We interpreted these bacterial superinfections as the clinical result of scratching due to pruritus. Methods: In 2012, we decided to treat all children with a single lesion of tinea corporis with a combination of 1% isoconazole nitrate and 0.1% diflucortolone valerate cream (one application/day for 5â7Â days), followed by a treatment with isoconazole or clotrimazole or ciclopirox cream (two applications/day for two weeks). Results: From 2012 to 2014, we observed 108 children with tinea corporis confirmed by mycological examinations. Clinical and mycological recovery was observed in 93 of them (86.1%). Only four of these children (3.7%) developed S. aureus superinfections. Conclusions: Our study in atopic children with tinea corporis superinfected by S. aureus confirms that a topical therapy with the association isoconazoleâdiflucortolone is useful and safe
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
