A surprising pattern of Sexual Dimorphism in the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Sweden
Sexual dimorphism is a very common strategy in polygamous mammals. In mustelids, sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is present in several species, while sexual shape dimorphism (SShD) is not as common. The Eurasian otter is a semiaquatic mustelid, exclusively feeding on aquatic prey, mainly fish, amphibians, and crustaceans. It is well-known that male otters tend to be larger, whereas information on SShD is contrasting. We used a 3D geometric morphometric approach to investigate SSD and SShD in three genetically distinct populations of otters located in Northern, Central and Southern Sweden. We analyzed 71 otter skulls (M=41, F=30), using photogrammetric techniques to produce 3D models of each skull, placing 30 3D landmarks on each model. We found that sexual dimorphism varies among populations. Neither SSD nor SShD occurred in the North, only SSD occurred in the Centre, and both SSD and SShD are present in the South of Sweden. Allometric trajectories of males and females from the North population differed from those of the other two populations. Our results highlighted a great variability in sexual dimorphism in Swedish Eurasian otters, that probably derives from different responses to prey availability and historical contingencies
Priming as a model of behavioural sensitization.
Repeated exposure to drugs acting as direct or indirect stimulants of central dopamine transmission results in sensitization to their behavioural stimulant properties (behavioural sensitization). Priming provides a simple model of behavioural sensitization particularly suitable for studies of its neural and molecular mechanisms. The results obtained to date indicate that priming results in an increased responsiveness of postsynaptic dopamine receptor mechanisms in the caudate nucleus, possibly due to an increased affinity of the D-1 receptor for its agonist

The role of opicapone in the management of Parkinson's disease: an Italian consensus through a combined Nominal Group Technique and Delphi approach
Objective: Opicapone (OPC) is a third-generation peripheral catechol-O-methyl transferase inhibitor (COMT-i) approved as add-on therapy to levodopa/DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors (DDCI) combinations in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with end-of-dose motor fluctuations. While the OPC effectiveness on motor symptoms is well known, there is still uncertainty about the timing of introduction, the management of levodopa dose, and the efficacy on non-motor symptoms (NMS). Subjects and methods: A group of PD experts participated in a consensus activity composed of the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) and the Delphi method to better define the role of OPC. A list of statements was defined with the NGT and voted on through an online Delphi process by a panel of 85 Italian clinicians. Results: 24 statements were selected for the Delphi voting. Most statements (n=15, 62%) reached a consensus. A wide agreement was reached about the efficacy of OPC in treating motor fluctuations, including early morning akinesia and nocturnal akinesia. The panel widely agreed about the effectiveness of OPC in early fluctuating patients. The long-lasting inhibitory effect of OPC was recognized as an advantage over other COMT-i, resulting in a single daily dose and greater ease of introduction into the levodopa therapeutic regimen. Conclusions: The efficacy of OPC observed in the clinical trials for the management of PD patients with motor fluctuations is also experienced in clinical practice. The review of the current positioning of OPC from the late to early stages of the disease may represent an important step in the evolution of the PD therapeutic approach
