The noncircular shape of FLOWATCH-PAB prevents the need for pulmonary artery reconstruction after banding
Objective: To evaluate the differences between non-circular shape of FloWatch-PAB and conventional pulmonary artery (PA) banding. Methods: Geometrical analysis. Conventional banding and FloWatch-PAB perimeters were plotted against cross-sections. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. CFD compared non-circular FloWatch-PAB cross-sections with conventional banding regarding pressure gradients. Clinical data. Seven children, median age 2 months (7 days to 3 years), median weight 4.2 kg (3.2–9.8 kg), with complex congenital heart defects underwent PA banding with FloWatch-PAB implantation. Results: Geometrical analysis. Conventional banding: progressive reduction of cross-sections was accompanied by progressive reduction of PA perimeters. FloWatch-PAB: with equal reduction of cross-sections the PA perimeter remained constant. CFD model. Non-circular and circular banding provided same trans-banding pressure gradients for same cross-sections at any given flow. Clinical data. Mean PA internal diameter at banding was 13.3 ± 4.5 mm. After a mean interval of 5.9 ± 3.7 months, all children underwent intra-cardiac repair and simple FloWatch-PAB removal without PA reconstruction. Mean PA internal diameter with FloWatch-PAB removal increased from 3.0 ± 0.8 to 12.4 ± 4.5 mm (normal mean internal diameter for the age = 9.9 ± 1.6). No residual pressure gradient was recorded in correspondence of the site of the previous FloWatch-PAB implantation in 6/7 patients, 10 mmHg peak and 5 mmHg mean gradient in 1/7. Conclusions: The non-circular shape of FloWatch-PAB can replace conventional circular banding with the following advantages: (a) the pressure gradient will remain essentially the same as for conventional circular banding for any given cross-section, but with significantly smaller reduction of PA perimeter; and (b) PA reconstruction at the time of de-banding for intra-cardiac repair can be avoided
Reimprosa und Mischsprache bei Williram von Ebersberg. Mit einer kommentierten Ausgabe und cbersetzung seiner \u27Aurelius-Vita\u27
The paper explores how the rhetoric of early German texts was influenced by the trends and conventions of Latin prosi-metrum by looking at the Latin \u27Life of St. Aurelius\u27 which the most influential author of the 11th century in Germany, Williram, abbot of Ebersberg, wrote. For the first time, the \u27vita\u27 is presented in its rhythmical structure and edited with a full translation

J / psi and psi-prime production at the CERN p anti-p collider
We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/PSI --> mu+ mu- in ppBAR interactions at square-root s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range /y/ 5 GeV/c, BR (J/PSI --> mu+ mu-)sigma(ppBAR --> J/PSI) = 6.18 +/- 0.24 +/- 0.81 nb. The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb-1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/PSI production process, and the P(T) distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/PSI, via radiative decays of chi-states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of PSI' is also studied using the decay modes PSI' --> mu+ mu- and PSI' --> J/PSI-pi+pi-
Flower associations and nesting of the pollen wasp Quartinia major Kohl, 1898 (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Masarinae) in Morocco
Females of Quartinia major Kohl were observed to visit flowers of Pulicaria mauritanica Batt., Cladanthus arabicus (L.) Cass. and Asteriscus graveolens (Forssk.) Less., (all Asteroideae Asteraceae) at two localities in southern Morocco. Pollen in the provisions of two brood cells was more than 99% Aster-type (Asteroideae), indicating broad oligolecty. During pollen uptake from P. mauritanica, the females of Q. major employed a hitherto undescribed harvesting technique: They used their mouthparts to squeeze pollen from the corolla tubes of early male phase disc florets. Pollen was ingested immediately after it had been extracted. The nest was a multicellular subterranean burrow excavated in friable soil and surmounted by a turret. The nest walls were stabilized with self-generated silk
Do pancreatic proteases play a role in processing prolactase and/or in the postweaning decline of lactase?
To assess the role of pancreatic proteases in the proteolytic processing and in the postweaning decline of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH), we have determined lactase activity and the different LPH forms in postweaned rats in which a jejunal loop was excluded from contact with pancreatic secretions by a jejunal bypass procedure. As a control for the absence of pancreatic proteases, pro-sucrase-isomaltase (proSI), which is known to be split by pancreatic proteases into heterodimeric SI, was used. Nearly all proLPH was processed to mature LPH, indistinguishable from LPH isolated from control animals. SI was found only in the unsplit pro form, whereas it was normally processed to the heterodimeric SI in the control tissues. There were no significant differences in lactase and sucrase activities in operated and in sham-operated control animals. We conclude that pancreatic secretions are not essential for the processing of proLPH to LPH or in the postweaning decline of LPH. </jats:p

Measurement of alpha-s from b anti-b production at the CERN p anti-p collider
The UA1 Collaboration has recently improved its measurement of the beauty production cross-section by including explicit measurements of correlations. Using these data we have determined the strong coupling constant alpha(s). The comparison of the measured cross-section for 2-body final states with O(alpha(s)(3)) QCD predictions yields a measurement of alpha(S)(20 GeV) = 0.145(-0.010exp-0.016 th)(+0.012+0.013), corresponding to alpha(S)(M(Z)) = 0.113(-0.006 exp-0.009 th)(+0.007+0.008). This is the first theoretically well-defined measurement of alpha(S) from a purely hadronic production process. Evaluating alpha(S) from cross-sections at different Q(2)-values we find that the running of alpha(S) is needed for internal consistency of the UA1 data
Measurement of B(b)over-bar Correlations At the Cern P(p)over-bar Collider
We report on measurements of correlated bbBAR production in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV, using dimuon data to tag both the b and bBAR quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on B0-B0BAR mixing. From a study of bbBAR correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential bbBAR production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to O(alpha(s)3) QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a sizeable contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded
