Design and Implementation of a Multifunctional Myoelectric Control for Upper Limb Prostheses

No full text
The myoelectric control of upper limb prostheses from surface EMG signals is characterized by the ease of data collection and by being non-invasive. Multiple functions of a prosthesis can be activated from the signals generated by a voluntary muscle contraction. In this work, we present a system that activates four functions of a hand prosthesis with two EMG channels by means of a command strategy based on the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Experiments were performed on five healthy subjects and one amputee to evaluate the feasibility of this strategy. The results showed a fluid and intuitive strategy, justified by an accurate performance of the subjects controlling the prosthetic functions.Fil: Oviedo, Gonzalo. Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto. Development of a Serious Game Controlled by Myoelectric Signals

No full text
This work presents the initial steps for the development of a serious game aimed at training users of upper limb prosthesis. In this initial phase, a virtual environment consisting of a soccer stadium was developed using Unity game engine. The game emulated the situation of a penalty kick where the users were able to control the direction to which the ball was kicked by contracting the muscles of the forearm. Experiments were performed on able-body subjects to assess their performance executing three series of ten penalties each. A score scale was implemented and the time needed to kick the penalties was measured. The results showed an intuitive and easy to play game, which was determined by the highly satisfactory performance of the subjects controlling the different functions of the game.Fil: Sosa, Mariano. Práticas para aprendizagens híbridas e interdisciplinares envolvendo criação, inventividade e computação física

No full text
Reduced kidney function and relative hypocalciuria—observational, cross-sectional, population-based data

No full text
This observational, cross-sectional, epidemiological analysis investigated relationships of kidney function to urine calcium and other variables. The analyses targeted two population-based samples of adults (Gubbio study and Molisani study: n = 3508 and 955, respectively). Kidney function was assessed as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Calcium/creatinine ratio (Ca/Cr) was used as index of urinary calcium in timed overnight urine under fed condition (Gubbio study), morning urine after overnight fast (Gubbio study), and first-void morning urine (Moli-sani study). Moli-sani study included also data for glomerular filtered calcium load, tubular calcium handling, and serum phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, calcium, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. eGFR positively and independently related to Ca/Cr (p < 0.001). In multivariate analyses, eGFR lower by 10 mL/min × 1.73 m2 related to overnight urine Ca/Cr lower by 14.0 mg/g in men and 17.8 mg/g in women, to morning urine Ca/Cr lower by 9.3 mg/g in men and 11.2 mg/g in women, and to first-void urine Ca/Cr lower by 7.7 mg/g in men and 9.6 mg/g in women (p < 0.001). eGFR independently related to glomerular filtered calcium load (p < 0.001) and did not relate to tubular calcium handling (p ≥ 0.35). In reduced eGFR only (<90 mL/min × 1.73 m2 ), low urine Ca/Cr independently related to low serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (p = 0.002) and did not relate to hyperphosphatemia, high serum parathyroid hormone, or hypocalcemia (p ≥ 0.14). Population-based data indicated consistent associations of lower kidney function with lower urine calcium due to reduction in glomerular filtered calcium. In reduced kidney function, relative hypocalciuria associated with higher prevalence of low serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D

Evidence on the prevalence and geographic distribution of major cardiovascular risk factors in Italy

No full text
Objective: To assess the prevalence and geographic distribution of major cardiovascular risk factors in a large community-wide sample of the Italian population. Design: A cross-sectional survey. Standardized methods were used to collect and measure cardiovascular risk factors. Data were adjusted for survey weightings. Qualitative and quantitative variables were compared with parametric and non-parametric tests, as appropriate. Setting: Towns (n 193) across different Italian regions. Subjects: Unselected adults (n 24 213; 12 626 men; 11 587 women) aged 18–98 years (mean age 56·9 (sd 15·3) years), who volunteered to participate in a community-wide screening programme over a 2 d period in 2007. Results: Overall, the prevalence of major cardiovascular risk factors was: obesity, 22·7 % (women 18·9 %, men 26·1 %); overweight, 44·7 % (women 31·6 %, men 56·7 %); hypertension, 59·6 % (women 48·3 %, men 70·0 %); dyslipidaemia, 59·1 % (women 57·7 %, men 60·3 %); diabetes, 15·3 % (women 11·2 %, men 19·0 %) and smoking, 19·8 % (women 14·0 %, men 25·2 %). We found a high prevalence of unhealthy eating habits; fruit and vegetable consumption was below the recommended range in 60 % of the study population. Ninety per cent of the study population had more than one cardiovascular risk factor and 84 % had between two and five cardiovascular risk factors. There were differences among Italian macro-areas mainly for obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes. Conclusions: The study provides alarming evidence on current prevalence data for major cardiovascular risk factors in a large sample of the Italian population. Particularly, obesity and hypertension represent a relevant public health problem. There is a pressing need for effective preventive health measures which must also take into account the differences among Italian macro-areas
