A case study of water distribution network reliability assessment with Mike-Net

This paper describes an hydraulic reliability model that has been developed by University of Basilicata and DHI Water & Environment (Hydroinform in Prague). The model has been described through a case study representing the water distribution system of the city of Matera (Basilicata, Italy). The new module (Reliability Analysis Module) is integrated into the DHI hydraulic simulation model MIKE NET to insure the full technologic transfer of the involved methodologies. This tool permits reliability analysis of complex infrastrucutres and the identification of the critical nodes of the system as well as evaluating the service levels corresponding to different scenarios and the risks due to possible malfunctioning and so it is useful as a support for the decision making process (definition of management criteria and operational rules). The applicability of such approaches is only limited by the capacity of the involved models to reproduce the real hydraulic functioning conditions of the water distribution network analysed. The use of sophisticated simulation instruments facilitates complex analysis that reproduce the spatial-temporal trends of multiple hydraulic and chemical parameters and obtain a wide complex result. The level of analytical detail of the characteristics reproduced by the models makes the interpretation phase difficult and indicate the necessity to synthesize the simulation outputs objectively. Moreover, in this context modeling instruments that evaluate the whole system performance or calculate the reliability of any different elements are the best interpretation aid in undersanding the real bahavior of complex system in any operative conditions (scenarios). The aided outputs model reading permits the identification of the critical system elements and the estimatation of the service levels, thus enabling an evaluation of possible malfunctioning risk and, therefore, is a potent instrument in the selection or definition of optimal management and operation rules

Analysis of water networks with discontinuous supply flows

In analyzing water distribution networks hydraulic behavior it is often requested to describe the demand flows, not assigning them values (Demand Driven Analysis), but introducing the nodes relationship between pressures and outflows (Head Driven Analysis). The computational models usually used are not able to correctly simulate the variations of the flows determined by the pressure conditions in any nodes and, therefore, they are not usable to analyze the aforesaid behaviors. Instead to employ the Head Driven models, that imposes to define the Q=f(H) relationship in every node, an iterative procedure is applied (Ermini et to the., 2006) that allows to use the traditional EPANET model but recursively correcting the demand flows to satisfy the congruence between demand flows and pressure at every nodes. A very interesting comparison is showed analyzing the hydraulic behavior of a complex water distribution network (city of Dhaka in Bangladesh), underlining the potentialities of the proposed modeling tool. Often, particularly in developing countries the rapid growth of the hydraulic consumptions, the lack of adequate water supply and the increasing inefficiency of water distribution systems impose discontinuous hydraulic functioning with demands supplied only in some periods. In such networks low pressures, irregularly delivered flows and wide spred inefficiencies often occur in many zone of the. Previous topic are discussed in the present paper referring to the case study of the Dhaka (Bangladesh) distribution network that deals water supply to 4.5-6 milions of inhabitants distributed in an area of about 150 Km2. The Dhaka network is made of about 1700 Km of pipes, 400 wells and 3 intakes from Gange River. Actually water requirements are not satisfied so that only 17 m3/s (corresponding to 244-326 l/inhabb•day) are delivered to the users, instead of 25 m3/s (corresponding to 360-480 l/inhab.day) requested. Therefore water has been managed by applying intermittent service in many districts

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
