OVERCOMING POSITIVISM IN ECONOMICS: AMARTYA SEN'S PROJECT OF INFUSING ETHICS INTO ECONOMICS
No full textLogical Positivism, which arose in philosophy early in the twentieth century, proclaimed the sharp distinction between facts and values. Despite objections at the time, positivism was imported into economics in the 1930s. Over time, objections lessened; economics was transformed and ethical considerations were driven out of its core. In the 1950s, debates about positivism arose within the discipline which had exported it. According to the American philosopher Hilary Putnam, the fact/value distinction is now discredited in philosophy. If that is so, the methodological foundations of contemporary economics are also discredited. In this article I examine Amartya Sen’s moral science of economics. First, I will present his historical account of the connections between economics and ethics. Sen claims that there was a close connection between the two until positivism was imported. Second, I will sketch some of Sen’s ethical objections to modern economics, which is still suffering from positivism. Finally, I will lay out some of his ideas on how economics can be returned to an ethical path. Once the ground has been cleared of positivism, ethics can re-emerge in economics in various ways. Paternal Psychosocial Characteristics and Corporal Punishment of their 3-Year Old Children
No full textThis study uses data from 2,309 biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) to examine associations between psychosocial characteristics and levels of corporal punishment (CP) toward their 3-year old children over the past month. Results indicate that 61% of the fathers reported no CP over the past month, 23% reported using CP once or twice, and 16% reported using CP a few times in the past month or more. In multivariate models controlling for important socio-demographic factors as well as characteristics of the child, fathers’ parenting stress, major depression, alcohol use, and drug use were significantly associated with greater use of CP, whereas involvement with the child and generalized anxiety order were not. Girls were less likely to be the recipient of CP than boys, and child externalizing behavior problems but not internalizing behavior problems were associated with more CP.Fragile families, childbearing, nonmarital childbearing, fartherhood, fathers, corporal punishment, behavior problems, stress, depression

No full textThe article recalls the history of Kazimierz Wierzyński’s friendship with conductor Artur Rodziński, who inspired the poet to write a biography of Chopin, addressed to foreign readers, for the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death, which fell in 1949. Freqüência cardíaca e força de preensão manual durante a luta de jiu-jitsu
No full textO jiu-jitsu é uma luta cujo objetivo é arremessar o adversário ao solo e dominá-lo através de técnicas de imobilização, estrangulamento ou chave articular. Nessa modalidade os atletas são subdivididos de acordo com a graduação e a massa corporal. Como o jiu-jitsu é pouco estudado do ponto de vista fisiológico, o objetivo desse estudo foi analisar a freqüência cardíaca (FC) e a força isométrica de preensão manual (FIPM) durante a luta, além de caracterizar os atletas quanto à composição corporal. Para isso, foi conduzida uma pesquisa descritiva com 22 atletas masculinos de jiu-jitsu que concordaram em participar desse estudo após leitura e assinatura de um termo de consentimento informado. Os atletas foram avaliados quanto às variáveis antropométricas, FIPM e 15 preensões para medida da FIPM (direita e esquerda) sem fadiga prévia, FC e FIPM a cada minuto durante uma luta de cinco minutos. A FC e a FIPM durante a luta foram comparadas através de uma ANOVA a um fator com medidas repetidas, seguida por teste de Bonferroni. A associação entre variáveis foi feita pelo teste de correlação de Pearson. A FC era menor (p < 0,05) no primeiro minuto (148+15 bpm) em relação ao terceiro (162+17 bpm), quarto (157+15 bpm) e quinto (166+16 bpm) minutos. As FCs no segundo (153+16 bpm) e quarto minutos também eram menores (p <0,05) que a do quinto minuto. A FIPM não diferia entre os períodos, porém em todos os momentos era inferior (85,2+8,6% do máximo) a FIPM sem fadiga prévia. A principal correlação encontrada foi entre a circunferência do antebraço e a FIPM direita (r = 0,71).
