    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Theoretical analysis of self-energizing brake calipers

    A theoretical analysis on the efficiency of different caliper architectures is described in the paper. The development of an electrically actuated brake caliper is of major interest for designing hybrid and electric vehicles. Electric actuation must be sufficient to generate the large braking torque required to stop the vehicle. Traditional caliper architectures are not suitable for such type of actuation due to the inadequate level of efficiency. The actuation forces required by production passenger vehicles are very large resulting in unacceptable actuation currents and layout issues due to the relevant electric actuator size. The self-energizing mechanism is an effective way to over-come this limitation and to use the electric actuation on a passenger car brake caliper. Different self-energizing calipers solutions are compared in terms of energy efficiency, actuating force, actuating stroke and, last but not least, stability. The sensitivity of the different configurations with respect to the self-energizing angle is discussed

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A smart wheel for improving the active safety of road vehicles

    A new lightweight smart wheel has been designed and manufactured. The smart wheel is able to measure the three forces and the three moments acting at the wheel. The wheel is based on an original structural concept and it appears to be rather simple to be implemented in future automobiles. The paper presents the concept and the testing of such a device. The structural part is composed basically by three spokes whose deformations (depending on the forces applied to the wheel) are sensed by means of strain gauges. The strain gauges signals are filtered, amplified and digitally converted and finally wireless transmitted to a remote receiver which can be connected to the vehicle control unit. A particular joint structure, which do realize the physical link between the three spoke structure (wheel hub) and the wheel rim, is designed. The smart-wheel calibration phase is described in the paper. A comprehensive indoor and outdoor experimental phase has been completed, useful to compare the performance of the new sensor with respect to commercial measuring wheels. The performance of the smart wheel fits well the need of improving the active safety of road vehicles. In other terms, the information given by the wheel, allowing to sense the three forces and the three moments, should lead to considerable improvement of the ABS and ESP/VDC performance with respect to today control logics

    A Method for Vibration and Harshness Analysis Based on Indoor Testing of Automotive Suspension Systems

    The paper presents a method for the indoor testing of road vehicle suspension systems. A suspension is positioned on a rotating drum which is located in the Laboratory for the Safety of Transport at Politecnico di Milano. Special six-axis load cells have been designed and used for measuring the forces/moments acting at each suspension-chassis joints. The forces/moments, wheel accelerations, displacements are measured up to 100 Hz. Two different types of test can be performed. The tire/wheel unbalance effect on the suspension system behavior (Vibration and Harshness, VH) has been analyzed by testing the suspension system from zero to the vehicle maximum speed on a flat surface and by monitoring the forces transmitted to the chassis. In the second kind of test, the suspension system has been excited as the wheel passes over different cleats fixed on the drum. By analyzing the forces and the acceleration measured on the suspension system, a set of performance indexes has been derived from the analysis of the data both in time and frequency domain. A simple mathematical model of the tire/suspension system has been derived and validated to analyze the relative effect of the road irregularity and of the tire/wheel unbalance on an actual suspension dynamic behavior. It has been shown, that the direct measurement of the forces and moments at the suspension-chassis joints is an effective way for understanding the vibration and harshness suspension performances
