Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Preliminary association studies between EBVs and SNPs in 5 candidate genes for milk fat in goats
Fat yield and content play a major role in the technological and nutritional quality of goat milk, influencing nutritional, aromatic and technological characteristics, like firmness, color and flavor, of milk and milk-derived products (Delacroix-Buchet and Lamberet 2000). These traits are relevant factors for the market value of dairy goat products and make milk fat a considerable component of the economic efficiency of goat production. Moreover, fatty acid composition of milk is of great interest, considering the implications for human health (Garcìa-Fernandez et al. 2009).
This work aims to present some preliminary results of the association studies between a panel of SNPs identified in candidate genes for milk fat and estimated breeding values for fat yield (kg) and fat content (%), calculated by the National Breeders Association (ASSONAPA) on a sample of 80 Alpine and Saanen bucks reared in Italy.
The five candidate genes investigated are well known for their role. Acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase alpha (ACACA) is part of a multifunctional complex enzyme system which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in fatty acid synthesis. Badaoui et al. (2007a) observed in ACACA gene a polymorphism associated with fat yield, lactose content and somatic cell count in 4 Spanish goat breeds. Diacilglycerol acyl transferase 1 (DGAT1) is a key enzyme in triacylglycerol synthesis in the mammary gland, well known in cattle for its effects on fat and protein yield (Grisart et al. 2004), whereas in goat Angiolillo et al. (2007) identified only a SNP. Fatty acid synthase (FASN) encodes a multifunctional protein catalyzing the synthesis of palmitate into long-chain saturated fatty acids. In cattle SNP on FASN gene showed a significant association with milk fat yield and content (Roy et al. 2006).
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) encodes homonymous lipase with the dual functions of triglyceride hydrolase and ligand/binding factor for receptor-mediated lipoprotein uptake. In this gene Badaoui et al. (2007) observed one SNP associated with fat content in 4 Spanish goat breeds.
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) is the key enzyme involved in the endogenous synthesis of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in ruminants. It is well studied in cattle whereas in goat only some SNPs are known (Badaoui et al. 2007b; Moioli et al. 2007)
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. SHEEP&GOAT biodiversity: a genomic picture of the Italian small ruminant landscape (SHEEP&GOAT biodiversity: una fotografia genomica del panorama ovino e caprino italiano)
Introduzione
L’Italia presenta un ricco panorama di oltre 100 razze ovine e caprine riconosciute e gestite dall’Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia. Un’importante azione iniziata con il progetto CHEESR e proseguita con il progetto SHEEP&GOAT, entrambi finanziati dal PSRN, è la caratterizzazione genomica dei tipi genetici autoctoni (TGA) al fine di monitorare e descrivere la biodiversità ovina e caprina italiana e fornire agli allevatori importanti parametri per la gestione dei propri riproduttori. Questo studio presenta i risultati dei dati genomici e genealogici ad oggi ottenuti.
Materiali e Metodi
Nell’ambito del progetto SHEEP&GOAT sono stati finora genotipizzati con SNPchip a media densità 395 soggetti di 28 razze ovine e 415 soggetti di 24 razze caprine. Per ognuna, sono stati calcolati parametri relativi alla struttura di popolazione, tra cui distanze genetiche, analisi delle componenti principali, Admixture, e somiglianza genetica entro e tra razze. Inoltre, sono stati analizzati l'inbreeding genomico basato sulle runs of homozygosity (FROH) e l'eterozigosità. Con i dati rilevati abbiamo inoltre prodotto schede di descrizione genomica dei TGA e schede di identificazione dei singoli riproduttori, che saranno rese disponibili ai proprietari per confrontare i valori stimati dei singoli soggetti con quelli medi dell'allevamento e della popolazione.
Inoltre, a partire dalle consistenze del 2023, si è calcolato un valore di dimensione effettiva (Ne) per tutte le razze ovine e caprine registrate, utile per stimarne lo stato di rischio di estinzione.
Risultati
Le analisi relative alla struttura di popolazione confermano, in generale, una buona separazione delle razze, che si dispongono prevalentemente lungo un gradiente geografico. L’inbreeding genomico risulta essere, in media, leggermente più alto nelle pecore (7.5±4.3%) che nelle capre (6.5±4.6%), ma con valori molto variabili nelle diverse popolazioni. La ripartizione di FROH nelle diverse classi di lunghezza delle ROH consente inoltre di valutare l’evoluzione temporale dell’inbreeding, migliorando la gestione della popolazione. Grazie all’utilizzo dei dati di parentela genomica, inoltre, è possibile correggere le incongruenze riportate nei pedigree.
La stima della dimensione effettiva delle popolazioni evidenzia un rischio di estinzione a breve termine (Ne≤50) per il 28% delle razze caprine e il 20% di quelle ovine, e a medio termine (Ne≤500) per oltre la metà delle popolazioni.
Conclusioni
I risultati ottenuti dall’integrazione delle analisi genomiche, genealogiche e fenotipiche forniscono una descrizione accurata ed aggiornata della biodiversità presente nel nostro Paese. Se tali attività diventeranno routinarie, sarà possibile valutare ancora più accuratamente l’inbreeding e la variabilità genetica delle popolazioni, strumenti fondamentali per la corretta gestione e salvaguardia delle risorse ovine e caprine locali

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
