Perspectives on evidentiality in Spanish: explorations across genres/ edited by Carolina Figueras Bates, Adrián Cabedo Nebot.

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references and index."Evidentiality in communication is better investigated in delimited and recognizable contexts where the multiple levels of meaning in interactional practices are manifested. Taking this viewpoint, the present volume explores the interrelations between evidentials and textual genre in Spanish. Adopting a discursive perspective, all of the chapters examine how the functional category of evidentiality is brought into discourse, which set of linguistic strategies makes explicit what counts as evidence in certain contexts and in certain textual genres, and what particular pragmatic meanings these mechanisms acquire, invoke and project onto the on-going discourse. In particular, this book is concerned with the relationship between evidential expressions and the pragmatic meaning(s) triggered by those expressions, and the role of genre in shaping the evidential meanings. The volume is addressed to both theoretically and empirically minded scholars in the disciplines of pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, communication studies, and psychology"--Evidentiality in discourse / Adrián Cabedo Nebot and Carolina Figueras Bates -- On the dynamicity of evidential scales: Pragmatic indirectness in evidentiality as a rhetorical strategy in academic and political discourse / Maria Estellés and Marta Albelda -- Exploring evidentiality in Spanish Biology articles (1850-1920): Intersubjectivity and accessibility of evidences / Dorota Kotwica -- Performing the self in illness narratives: The role of evidentiality / Carolina Figueras Bates -- Evidentiality, deonticity and intensification in Internet forum language / Elisabeth Miche -- Prosody, genres and evidentiality in Spanish: The case of "por lo visto" / Adrian Cabedo Nebot -- "No sé": Epistemic stance, evidential grounding and scope in unplanned oral genres / Montserrat González -- The Spanish quotative según across written genres / Ana Llopis Cardona -- Según along time: Following an epistemic path / Ricardo Maldonado and Juliana De la Mora Gutiérrez -- Tenses in interaction: Beyond evidentiality / Susana Rodríguez Rosique.1 online resource

Datos sobre la edad y crecimiento de la albacora (Germo alalunga, Bonnaterre)

5 páginas, 3 figuras, 1 tabla.[EN] In the present paper the age of albacore (Germo alalunga (Bonnaterre)) of NW. Spanish coasts is studied using concentric marks on the centra of vertebrae as indicators of the age of the fish. The relationship of body length to vertebral radius is rectilinear. There is good agreement between the estimated average length for the III, IV, V and VI groups found by the author and those of PARTLO (1955), but there exists also a difference of about one year in the calculated average length and that observed by both authors. The author believes that the vertebral annulus is probably laid down later at a certain distance from the edge of the vertebral centrum. The author reaches the conclusion that the mean length of the albacore (males and females together) is aproximately: 17-18 cm in its 1rst year 31-32 » ...... 2nd " 44-45 » ...... 3rd " 56-57 » ....... 4th " 69-70 » ...... 5th " 81-82 » ...... 6th " 91-93 » ...... 7th " [...] Design of a Small, Low Cost, P-Band Airborne Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar

    No full text
A preliminary study of the design of a small, low cost, P-band airborne, polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar desired by the Wageningen University and the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) to carry out forest biomass monitoring in Indonesia is presented. The requirements of the application are established and the main radar parameters are derived from them. A preliminary design of the system, based on commercial off-the-shelf components is also presented. Some novelties of the system are the use of Direct Digital Synthesis to perform the modulation, the use of dual-polarized microstrip square patch antennas and the reduced size and power consumption of the system. To assist in the calculations and comparisons of SAR systems a general Matlab based program, SARCAL, has been developed. Its philosophy and main functions are described

The novel El rey de los espinos (2014) by Argentine writer Marcelo Figueras is set in a constellation of thresholds that offers a figure like that of the kaleidoscope. Defined as an "adventure novel" by its author, though a tributary of both the fantastic genre and science fiction, it draws readers into a series of adventures in which stories and aesthetics from the comic strip intersect with an X-ray of the contemporary world.
