Radio Continuum Observations of the Candidate Supermassive Black Hole in the Dwarf Elliptical VCC 128
No full textThe presence of black holes (BHs) at the centers of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) has been argued both theoretically and observationally. Using archival HST WFPC2 data, we found the Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 128 to harbor a binary nucleus, a feature that is usually interpreted as the observable signature of a stellar disk orbiting a central massive black hole. Debattista et al. estimated its mass as M(center dot) similar to 6 x 10(6)-5 x 10(7) M(circle dot). One of the most robust means of verifying the existence of a BH is radio continuum and/or X-ray emission; however, because of the deficiency of gas in dEs, radio continuum emission is the best option here. We have tried to detect the X-band radio emission coming from the putative black hole in VCC 128 when it accretes gas from the surrounding ISM. While we made a positive 4 sigma detection of a point source 4.63 '' southwest of the binary nucleus, no statistically significant evidence for emission associated with the nuclei themselves was detected. This implies either that VCC 128 has no massive central black hole, which makes the nature of the binary nucleus hard to explain, or, if it has a central black hole, that the physical conditions of the ISM ( predominantly its density and temperature) and/or of the surrounding accretion disk do not allow for efficient gas accretion onto the black hole, making the quiescent black hole very difficult to detect at radio wavelengths

The dynamical structure of isotropic spherical galaxies with a central black hole
No full textWe discuss the kinematical structure of a two-parameter
family of isotropic models with a central black hole. The family
contains the slope of the central density cusp and the relative black
hole mass as parameters. Most of the basic kinematical quantities of
these models can be expressed analytically. This family contains three
distinct models where also the distribution function, differential
energy distribution and spatial LOSVDs can be expressed completely
analytically. Each of these models shows a drastically different
behaviour of the distribution function. Although the effect of a black
hole on the distribution function is very strong, in particular for
models with a shallow density cusp, the differential energy
distribution is only marginally affected. We discuss in detail the
effects of a central black hole on the LOSVDs. The projected velocity
dispersion increases with black hole mass at small projected radii,
but the effect of a black hole on the shape of the LOSVDs
(characterized by the h4 parameter) is less straightforward to
interpret. Too much reliance on the wings of the LOSVDs and the value
of the h4 parameter to determine black hole masses might hence be
dangerous

Meaning in a changing paradigm: the semantics of you and the pragmatics of thou
No full textMany European languages have two pronouns for singular address. For such languages, Brown and Gilman (1960) propose a model that can explain pronominal choice, arguing that the pronouns allow speakers to construe the speaker-hearer relation with respect to two major social dimensions–power and solidarity. Pronominal choice then functions as a major resource for realizing social deixis in dialogic interaction. However, discussions of the Modern English thou/you contrast have criticized the power-and-solidarity model by emphasizing the language-specific peculiarities of the Modern English system. Thou and you appear to deviate in meaning from the second person pronouns in other languages. You can be used to address virtually anyone and in many contexts seems to be a neutral form, rather than a form signalling speaker deference or social distance. Thou is associated with emotional language and seems to express speaker agitation. However, in this paper we argue that the peculiarities of the Modern English system may have been overstated. Using evidence from dialogic interactions in Modern English comedies, it is shown that as long as thou is available as a systemic option, you retains its value of signalling deference or social distance, even in contexts where thou could not appear. As for thou, it is argued that the association with speaker agitation can be interpreted as a pragmatic side effect of the form's dwindling frequency.
