Sex trafficking of girls and women : Evidence from Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh
A crucial gap in the trafficking literature from India is the dearth of primary data and micro studies that could be used for vulnerability mapping of the source areas and addressing the identified risk factors. The present paper is a small attempt to contribute to plugging the gap in the context of Andhra Pradesh, identified as a hot spot in the trafficking literature. This paper is based on case studies of 78 women who had been trafficked from their places of origin in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh to metropolitan cities across India and who have since returned to their homes. The paper attempted to identify the individual and family circumstances that contribute to the causes of trafficking, to highlight in particular the gendered vulnerabilities that set these women up for trafficking, and to capture the process of the trafficking experience. The findings of the study are located in the dynamic interplay of the social structural context and specificities of the district that contribute to causes of trafficking and the individual circumstances and agency of the women. The case studies reported in this paper are a pointer to the compelling urgency of interventions that will go beyond the forced / voluntary divide in trafficking and sex work.Andhra Pradesh, India, trafficking
2018 ASHA Research Symposium: Swathi Kiran, Neuroplasticity and Language Recovery
This presentation video is from the Research Symposium at the 2018 annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association held in Boston, MA. The abstract for the accompanying article is below. This article is part of the JSLHR Forum: Advances in Neuroplasticity Research on Language Recovery in Aphasia.Purpose: Despite a tremendous amount of research in this topic, the precise neural mechanisms underlying language recovery remain unclear. Much of the evidence suggests that activation of remaining left-hemisphere tissue, including perilesional areas, is linked to the best treatment outcomes, yet recruitment of the right hemisphere for various language tasks has also been linked to favorable behavioral outcomes. In this review article, we propose a framework of language recovery that incorporates a network-based view of the brain regions involved in recovery.Method: We review evidence from the extant literature and work from our own laboratory to identify findings consistent with our proposed framework and identify gaps in our current knowledge.Results: Expanding on Heiss and Thiel’s (2006) hierarchy of language recovery, we identify 4 emerging themes: (a) Several bilateral regions constitute a network engaged in language recovery; (b) spared left-hemisphere regions are important components of the network engaged in language recovery; (c) as damage increases in the left hemisphere, activation expands to the right hemisphere and domain-general regions; and (d) patients with efficient, control-like network topology show greater improvement than paients with abnormal topology. We propose a mechanistic model of language recovery that accounts for individual differences in behavior, network topology, and treatment responsiveness.Conclusion: Continued work in this topic will lead us to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying language recovery, biomarkers that influence recovery, and, consequently, more personalized treatment options for individual patients.Kiran, S., Meier, E. From symmetry breaking to symmetry swapping: is Kasha's rule violated in multibranched phenyleneethynylenes?
The phenomenon of excited-state symmetry breaking is often observed in multipolar molecular systems, significantly affecting their photophysical and charge separation behavior. As a result of this phenomenon, the electronic excitation is partially localized in one of the molecular branches. However, the intrinsic structural and electronic factors that regulate excited-state symmetry breaking in multibranched systems have hardly been investigated. Herein, we explore these aspects by adopting a joint experimental and theoretical investigation for a class of phenyleneethynylenes, one of the most widely used molecular building blocks for optoelectronic applications. The large Stokes shifts observed for highly symmetric phenyleneethynylenes are explained by the presence of low-lying dark states, as also established by two-photon absorption measurements and TDDFT calculations. In spite of the presence of low-lying dark states, these systems show an intense fluorescence in striking contrast to Kasha's rule. This intriguing behavior is explained in terms of a novel phenomenon, dubbed “symmetry swapping” that describes the inversion of the energy order of excited states, i.e., the swapping of excited states occurring as a consequence of symmetry breaking. Thus, symmetry swapping explains quite naturally the observation of an intense fluorescence emission in molecular systems whose lowest vertical excited state is a dark state. In short, symmetry swapping is observed in highly symmetric molecules having multiple degenerate or quasi-degenerate excited states that are prone to symmetry breaking
Aerodynamic performance of aircraft wings with stationary vertical lift propellers
Improvements in battery and motor technology are facilitating innovative aircraft configurations capable of vertical take-off and landing. Of these configurations, lift+cruise is popular for its inherent redundancy and the option to tailor separate propulsion systems for each flight regime. During cruise, the vertical flight propellers of a lift+cruise design are inactive and often exposed. Increasing the projected area of a body is understood to increase the drag, but the aerodynamic performance of an edgewise, stationary propeller and its influence on neighboring bodies is less clear. This study aimed to quantify the impact of two, tandem, edgewise and stationary propellers on the aerodynamic performance of a wing using wind tunnel measurements. The stationary position of the front and rear propellers were varied in 30
∘ increments between 0-150
∘, at angles of attack between -4
∘ and 10
∘. Results at Re = 4.3×10
5 showed the propellers and supporting systems had negligible influence on the lift. However, a drag increase of up to 30% was recorded when propeller positions were aligned perpendicular to the wing chord instead of parallel. Variations in the stationary position of the propeller altered the lift to drag ratio by up to 36% in a typical cruise configuration.

Matching in power graphs of finite groups

In this paper, the matching numbers of power graphs of finite groups are investigated. We give upper and lower bounds, and conditions for the power graph of a group to possess a perfect matching. We give a formula for the matching number for any finite nilpotent group. In addition, using some elementary number theory, we show that the matching number of the enhanced power graph Pe(G) of G (in which two elements are adjacent if both are powers of a common element) is equal to that of the power graph of G.Peer reviewe

Impact of an educational module on the knowledge and attitude of nursing students toward eye donation
Background: The only source of cornea for corneal transplantation is from timely harvested safe eyes of deceased donors. Nurses attending on terminally ill patients can, if trained, motivate the relatives for eye donation. Aims: The aim of this study is to determine impact of an educational lecture on knowledge and attitude of nursing students toward eye donation. Settings and Design: This was an interventional study. Subjects and Methods: Nursing students in their 1st year and 4th year of training were administered a prestructured questionnaire. A 30-min interactive session was conducted for them regarding eye donation and transplantation. After 4 months, the questionnaire was readministered and their responses were analyzed with regard to number of correct responses for each question. Statistical Analysis Used: The statistical analysis used in this study was MedCalc for Windows, version 13.3.1 (MedCalc Software, Ostend, Belgium). Student's t-test was used to analyze change in knowledge and attitude. P <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The difference in the level of knowledge and attitude between first year and final year students before the exposure to educational awareness video was not statistically significant (P = 0.2 and P = 0.9, respectively). Four months following the interactive video, change in knowledge levels was significant for both groups (P = 0.01 - first year and P = 0.006 - final year), but there was no significant change in their attitude toward eye donation. Conclusion: Inclusion of eye donation in nursing curriculum is likely to be effective in imparting knowledge to nursing students who may be potential counselors for eye donation. “The proof of the pudding lies in the eating” and whether this translates to action by actual increase in registration as donors and corneal harvests remains to be seen
