Nowy wymiar strachu - Blair Witch Project (1999) Daniela Myricka i Eduardo Sáncheza

    No full text
The feature-film debut “Blair Witch Project” (1999) by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez was an unexpected box-office hit. In spite of having a very low-budget and no movie stars in the cast, the directors adapted new means through which horror could be compellingly depicted on screen. The author of the article intends to unravel why so many viewers of “Blair Witch Project” believed that it presented a true story. On the one hand, it is connected with a well-prepared marketing campaign conducted by Myrick and Sánchez on the Internet. On the other, they used techniques characteristic of a documentary film, which eventually gave the impression that the film itself is a recording of authentic events. The author of the article has a firm belief the innovative ways in which the directors tried to thrill the American audience were the source of the film’s great success.Fryderyk Kwiatkowsk

Hybris, czyli o przyczynach porażek ambitnych projektów w twórczości mistrzów kina

The author, by adopting historical-critical method, presents the concept of the „unsuccessful masterpiece” and puts it on the borderline between film studies and film criticism. The point of departure for his analyses comprises a selected group of works by eminent directors which unfortunately did not meet expectations of critics and audience. The main source of the author’s inspiration for establishing the category of unsuccessful masterpiece lies in the remarks written by distinguished film critics, e. g. Roger Ebert. The author also draws on inquiries made by the scholars who tried to grasp the phenomenon of a masterpiece within theoretical borders. Therefore, he depicts the characteristic of an unsuccessful masterpiece based on the above-mentioned assumptions. In the author’s view this notion might be a useful tool for film critics to for evaluating works of specific kind. Moreover, the author’s attempt may contribute to theoretical studies on the phenomenon of masterpiece.Fryderyk Kwiatkowsk

Hybris, or the causes of failure of the ambitious projects in the oeuvre of masters of cinema

The author, by adopting historical-critical method, presents the concept of the "unsuccessful masterpiece" and putts it on the borderline between film studies and film criticism. Cohesional Slip on a Plate Subduction Boundary During a Large Earthquake

    No full text
The frontal part of the Japan Trench plate boundary fault, which slipped during the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake (M(w)9.0), is enriched in smectite and is intrinsically weak owing to the high swelling pressure of this mineral. Our rheometric experiments using analog fault materials demonstrate that "cohesional slip," rather than frictional slip, is a realistic faulting process in the studied fault zone. The cohesional slip can be described by the Bingham plastic model. Consequently, the coseismic shear stress is described by the yield stress and plastic viscosity. Comparison of the results with the average shear stress derived from a previous study suggests that the slip zone thickness for cohesional slip is similar to 1.3 cm or less. This finding is consistent with textures characterized by discrete slip planes of comparable thickness observed in the recovered fault rocks, suggesting that these slip planes were activated during the Tohoku-Oki earthquake

    Boron‐Catalyzed α‐Functionalizations of Carboxylic Acids

    No full text
Catalytic, chemoselective, and asymmetric alpha-functionalizations of carboxylic acids promise up-grading simple feedstock materials to value-added functional molecules, as well as late-stage structural diversifications of multifunctional molecules, such as drugs and their leads. In this personal account, we describe boron-catalyzed alpha-functionalizations of carboxylic acids developed in our group (five reaction types). The reversible boron carboxylate formation is key to the acidification of the alpha-protons and enolization using mild organic bases, allowing for chemoselective and asymmetric bond formations of carboxylic acids. The ligand effects on reactivity and stereoselectivity, substrate scopes, and mechanistic insights are summarized

: Implications of the predator satiation hypothesis

PremiseSynchronous, highly variable flower or seed production among years within a population (i.e., masting) has been reported in numerous perennial plants. Although masting provides ecological advantages such as enhancing pollination efficiency and/or escape from predator attack, little is known about the degree of these advantages and variations in masting behavior among populations of conspecific plants. MethodsWe determined flowering ramet density and reproductive success (fruit-set success and herbivorous damage) of a perennial herb, Veratrum album subsp. oxysepalum, across six lowland and six alpine populations in northern Japan during 2-3 years. We then analyzed the relationship between floral density and reproductive success to assess the ecological significance of mast flowering. Flowering intervals of individual plants were estimated by counting annual scars on rhizomes. ResultsMost populations had mast flowering, but the intervals between flowering for individual plants were shorter in the alpine populations than in the lowland populations. Floral damage by stem borers (dipteran larvae) and seed predation by lepidopteran larvae were intense in the lowland populations. Seed production of individual ramets increased with higher floral density owing to the effective avoidance of floral-stem damage and seed predation. Although stem borers were absent in the alpine habitat, seed predation decreased with higher floral density also in the alpine populations. Pollination success was independent of floral density in both of the alpine and lowland populations. ConclusionsThese results strongly support the predator satiation hypothesis for mast flowering by this species
