Entrepreneurship in Developing Environments : Navigating Challenges and Building Resilience (Case of a startup incubator in Morocco)
International audienceIn my recent presentation at the 3DS UnConference, I shared insights and lessons learned on entrepreneurship within developing environments, emphasizing resilience, adaptive strategies, and the critical role of sense-making. Reflecting on Karl Weick’s theory of sensemaking, I examined the process through which entrepreneurs ground their actions with purpose and clarity amid uncertain conditions. Key stages—preparation, execution, and adaptation—reveal how agile methods, effectuation principles, and lean startup techniques empower founders to navigate complexities and refine strategies.Entrepreneurial resilience was illustrated through dynamic scenarios, highlighting the importance of adaptability (“No plan survives contact with the enemy”) and the essential skills needed to re-center and rebuild after setbacks. The journey of entrepreneurship demands a grounded approach, fortified by strong networks, ethical decision-making, and a recognition of the mental resilience required to combat isolation and stress. My talk underscored the necessity of continuous learning, practical survival skills, and the drive to innovate, embodying the spirit of "longing for the immensity of the sea" as a metaphor for visionary growth. This presentation seeks to inspire emerging entrepreneurs to embrace both the challenges and rewards of their path
Reimagining Entrepreneurial Education : A Mixed-Methods Comparative Analysis of Ecosystems at UT Austin and Mohammed IV Polytechnique
International audienceThis research presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of the entrepreneurial ecosystems at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) and Mohammed IV Polytechnique in Morocco, exploring their influence on Entrepreneurial Education and Training (EET). Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study intertwines quantitative data analysis with rich qualitative insights, thereby offering a nuanced understanding of how these ecosystems contribute to shaping the landscape of entrepreneurial education. At the core of this research is an inductive methodology, which allows for a flexible and responsive exploration of the subject matter. This approach is particularly apt for investigating the complex and dynamic nature of entrepreneurial ecosystems, as it enables the research to be guided by the data and the unique characteristics of each ecosystem. By adopting this stance, the study seeks to uncover underlying patterns and relationships that may not be immediately apparent, thereby contributing to a deeper and more contextualized understanding of EET within these ecosystems.Quantitative analysis forms a crucial part of this research, primarily utilizing data from the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey (GUESSS) 2021 Report on Morocco. This data provides valuable insights into the attitudes, experiences, and entrepreneurial intentions of students, offering a statistical backdrop against which the qualitative findings can be contextualized. The quantitative analysis seeks to identify trends and correlations that can inform a broader understanding of the role of educational institutions in fostering entrepreneurial mindsets and capabilities.Complementing this, the qualitative aspect of the study involves in-depth interviews and case studies, focusing on the lived experiences and perceptions of stakeholders within the UT Austin and Mohammed IV Polytechnique ecosystems. This is where hermeneutic interpretation comes into play, allowing for a deep exploration of the meanings and implications behind the data. Through this interpretive lens, the research aims to capture the subtleties and complexities of how these ecosystems operate, the challenges they face, and the opportunities they present for enhancing EET.The comparative analysis between UT Austin and Mohammed IV Polytechnique is pivotal to this study. While these institutions are situated in markedly different cultural and economic contexts, both represent vibrant and evolving entrepreneurial ecosystems. This comparison promises to yield valuable insights into the diverse ways in which EET can be approached, structured, and delivered. It also provides an opportunity to explore how different environmental and cultural factors influence the development and effectiveness of entrepreneurial education programs. To conclude, this research aims to contribute to the broader discourse on entrepreneurial education, offering empirical insights and theoretical reflections that can inform educators, policymakers, and practitioners. By elucidating the intricate interplay between entrepreneurial ecosystems and EET, the study seeks to highlight best practices, identify areas for improvement, and suggest pathways for future research in this vital field
Foresight as a catalyst for social reconciliation : the application of human rights charters in Morocco in the age of AI
International audienceThis presentation explores the intersection of foresight, artificial intelligence (AI), and social reconciliation within the context of Morocco's evolving social landscape. It examines how AI and machine learning (ML) can enhance foresight methodologies to promote human rights and address cultural conflicts as Morocco navigates its digital future. Inspired by the principles of Gaston Berger's "attitude prospective" and foundational Moroccan social theorists, the research contextualizes foresight as both a methodological and philosophical approach—"seeing far, seeing broad, analyzing in depth, and considering people"—to anticipate and mitigate cultural tensions.Aiming to understand how digital tools can act as drivers for societal harmony, the study applies AI to examine case scenarios of reconciliation and to predict potential conflicts by 2030. Using a mixed-methods approach grounded in ethical data practices, the presentation emphasizes the need for privacy, informed consent, and data-sharing transparency. This foresight-driven approach intends to serve as a model for applying emerging technologies within human rights frameworks, ultimately advocating for a society that leverages digital innovation to build a more cohesive social fabric
Frugal Innovation and Entrepreneurial Identity in Morocco : Strategies for Resilience in Resource-Constrained Contexts
International audienceFrugal innovation, characterized by its ability to create impactful solutions using minimalresources, has gained significant traction as a transformative approach in emergingmarkets. This study delves into the intersection of frugal innovation and entrepreneurialidentity within the Moroccan context, where resource constraints and socio-economiccomplexities demand adaptive and resilient business practices. MadNess serves as a prime case study of frugal innovation, exemplifying howlimited access to resources can inspire ingenuity in building sustainable, culturallyrelevant solutions. Through the lens of the founder’s lived experiences, the researchhighlights strategies such as repurposing available materials, tailoring solutions to meetlocal needs, and fostering grassroots collaborations that bridge gaps between formaland informal ecosystems.Findings emphasize the critical role of frugal innovation in empowering Moroccanentrepreneurs to navigate the dual economy—a hybrid environment of formal regulatorysystems and informal business practices. By embedding innovation within their socio-cultural contexts, these entrepreneurs demonstrate exceptional resilience and creativity, reshaping conventional notions of resource utilization and market engagement. Thestudy contributes to the growing discourse on everyday entrepreneurship in emergingmarkets, particularly by illuminating how frugal innovation not only enables businesssustainability but also promotes social inclusion and cultural preservation. This research advocates for the integration of frugal practices into policy frameworksand entrepreneurial support programs to strengthen inclusive ecosystems.
