The author studied the effects of boron on the behaviour of sugar cane var. CB 41/14 through field and pot experiments with increasing doses of this micronutrient to six soils of Piracicaba county, SP, Brazil, classified at serial levels. In field trials, boron did not influence cane growth nor sugar content. Leaf analysis showed high levels independently of the amount of boron added to the soils, revealing their good supplying. Pot trials showed the same trends, but 8 ppm B added to the poorest soil reduced both cane and sugar production. Chemical analysis with leaves 5 months old revealed increasing contents according to the amounts given to the soils. With leaves 8 months old, the levels were lower and non selective with respect to the boron amounts applied. The best time to sample leaves for analysis seems to be 5 months, in the conditions of the study. Biologic tests with sunflower (Colwell method) indicated that the soils tried were slightly or non deficient in boron

A Petite Pallace of Pettie his Pleasure, studies the early modern English collection of novellas A Petite Pallace of Pettie his Pleasure (1576) and indentifies it as a collection for women and a forerunner of the euphuistic style. The thesis consists of three chapters. In the first chapter I consider women’s position in early modern England, as A Petite Pallace is dedicated to ladies. The second chapter deals with structural elements of each story included in the collection. I also trace modifications made by the author to his source stories in order to adapt them for his readers and to attract more attention. The last chapter focuses on linguistic devices used by Pettie to dazzle his audience and to demonstrate the possibilities of the English language

This dissertation examines Arab adaptations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Hamlet, Richard III, and Twelfth Night in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The Arab adaptations of Shakespeare under study mark the turn of the century and a turn in the representation of the conflict between the West, epitomized by the United States, and the Middle East. They provide a keen theatrical testimony to the changes which the region witnessed as they chronicle the progress of the transformations both on the sociopolitical scene and in the Shakespearean stage productions. The dissertation is also an examination of the notion of adaptation as conversion. The transformative nature of the theatrical experience and the act of transposing a Shakespearean text from one culture to another foster a cultural conversion that gives new meanings to Shakespeare as an author-function and to the process of reception, especially in a transcultural context

Effects of boron addition on the high temperature oxidation of MoSi2 alloys

Boron containing MoSi2 is a promising material for applications at high temperature, but the oxidation mechanism is still unclear. In this work, the high temperature (1100 °C) oxidation of B doped MoSi2 in synthetic air has been investigated. A (boro)silicate layer is formed on the surface of the alloy, which features a mixture of amorphous SiO2 and cristobalite. After an initial transient period, the oxidation kinetics follows a parabolic growth rate law. The growth rate constant of the oxide layer is enhanced by the boron in the alloy by 90 % per at.% B. The increase in growth rate is associated with boron mitigating the formation of cristobalite thereby promoting the formation of amorphous SiO2.Team Marcel HermansTeam Vera PopovichTeam Joris Di
