Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Community information comprises of services offered by libraries and information centers to provide the people with information that is relevant to their daily life. The information helps the poor and marginalized groups to improve their standard of living and contribute in decisions that affect their lives. This paper highlights the relevance of information in generating participatory approaches for community engagement and development. It examines the issues in the communities and the gaps between the rural dwellers and the duty bearers. The focus is to raise consciousness of the governed on policies and service deliveries because governance is meant to benefit every member of the society, irrespective of location or status. Many rural communities have continued to be underserved; hence, information becomes necessary in integrating the needs of the people for sustainable development. Librarians and libraries are charged with providing the information resources and outreaches to the communities to help build the bridge between the people and their representatives in the government. But the challenges before them are repackaging, restructuring, coordinating and collaborating with relevant groups that reform the community ideologies on information service. The best practices in community information need to be adopted immediately to underlie governance responsiveness at the community level so that the dwellers will function effectively. Keywords: community information, rural dwellers, duty bearers, library, informatio

The research assessed the extent of use of Information literacy tools by librarians in Nigeria for teaching undergraduate students skills to combat fake news. The research method was document analysis. The research analysed forty-four course materials currently used by Librarians for teaching an information literacy course coded GST 121 (Use of Library, Study Skills and Information Communication Technology. The research also examined library websites of 20 universities in Nigeria to determine availability of fake news content. Findings show there were no module or chapter on fake news and misinformation in the 44 course materials reviewed. Equally, there was no content on fake news on the library websites. However, the course materials included media and information literacy modules which are underlining competencies that are important in guarding against fake news and misinformation. The librarians provided instructional units on online bibliographic databases in more than half (56.8%) of the course materials. There were added units on database literature search (38.6%) and search engine information search (27.6%). Only a small percentage had units on evaluating information (11.4%). It is recommended that librarians should review the GST 121 curriculum and include distinct modules on evaluating information, fact-checking, spotting and combating fake news and misinformatio

Very often, low services are experienced in some areas, denying some people the opportunities to be informed and empowered on improvement of standard of living. This study investigated the riverrine communities of Anambra East and West Local Government Areas (LGAs) with access to library and information services. Two hundred self designed questionnaires were purposely sampled in ten communities in the areas. Questionnaire and interview were used to elicit data from different groups of people in the communities. Data were collected and analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The study found out that some communities are cut off and cannot be accessed except by river. Also discovered was that the rural dwellers desire information more on health, agriculture and economic activities. The available information provisions are through the NGOs, gate-keepers and friends. There is no rural library or information centre in the areas. The challenges of  information services were found out to be lack of funds, transportation difficulty, inadequate personnel and inadequacy of mobile library. It was recommended that the State Library Board should repackage its programs and collaborate with agencies in relevant information services to the dwellers. The government should also include rural communities in its priority of social services.Key words: community, library and information services, riverine areas, rural dwellers service delivery, underserve

The world is dynamic and information management is also dynamic. As such, one needs to change to the trend of global information management. There is an eagerness on the part of academic libraries and librarians in Nigeria to shift from traditional methods of information to modern information technologies. This has led to the influx of library software into the ICT market to drive automation needs of the academic libraries. There is need, however, for quality and reliable software that can effectively run on the operating systems of computers in academic libraries. This paper therefore, aims at creating awareness on the issues of selecting appropriate software for automation and management of academic libraries in Nigeria, and the existing software so as to enhance quality selection. The paper further portrayed the criteria in making an effective selection of software in academic libraries and provides guiding steps libraries should follow before selecting software. The paper not only discusses problems associated with software selection but also made recommendations for a way forward. It recommended for the library software developers to endeavor to always providing an upgrade that will not wipe out away old data, software that will be compatible with other library software user groups

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
