    Phytoliths and their applications

    Phytoliths are biomineralizations present in cell walls and/or inter or intracellular spaces of plant tissues. Although the term "phytolith" refers to different amorphous and/or mineral deposits compounded by different elements, such as calcium or silicon, this book focuses on amorphous biogenic silica (SiO2.nH2O), also known as opal phytoliths, silica phytoliths or silicophytoliths. In the present chapter a review of phytolith production and functions, organ and tissue localization and distribution among plant families is presented. It also describes the main phytolith morphologies found in plants, soils and sediments and their taxon assignment. The taxonomic value of these amorphous silica biomineralizations and the classifications employed in different phytolith studies are also discussed. A summary of some phytolith indexes, used in palaeoenvironmental studies from different regions and based on the relative abundances of morphologies, is presented.     Description of the project This dataset is the result of the research carried out in the project "A Benchmark for Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) Test Automatic Scoring", whose main goal was to establish a baseline for the scoring task consisting of: a dataset with 528 ROCF and results obtained by several deep learning models, as well as, by a group of psychology experts.Description of the dataset This dataset contains a single folder with 528 binary images of Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figures.Methodology The methodology used to collect the data consists of 4 steps: Step 1. Pencil drawing of 528 Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figures by 241 participants. Step 2. Drawings are scanned, cropped and cleaned of annotations. Step 3. The resulting images are rescaled to 384x384 pixels. Step 4. The images are binarized and their color is inverted. Descripción del proyecto El contenido de este dataset es resultado de la investigación llevada a cabo en el proyecto "Banco de Pruebas para la Puntuación Automática del Test de la Figura Compleja de Rey-Osterrieth (FCRO)", cuyo objetivo principal era el de establecer una línea base para dicha tarea que incluye: un dataset con 528 FCRO y resultados obtenidos por varios modelos de aprendizaje profundo, así como, por varios profesionales de la psicología.Descripción del dataset Este dataset contiene una única carpeta con 528 imágenes binarias de figuras complejas de Rey-Osterrieth.Metolodogía La metodología empleada para la obtención de los datos incluye 4 etapas: Etapa 1.     Silicophytoliths and silicon biogeochemical cycle in the Pampean Plain, Argentina

    The biogeochemistry cycle of silicon, the second most abundant element in the world, is scarcely known in continental environments and particularly in Argentina. We present a synthesis and revision of our work about the silica biogeochemical cycle in the southeast of the Pampean Plain, Argentina; with especial emphasis in the role of amorphous silica biomineralizations (silicophytoliths). Silicophytoliths are commonly produced in grassland species that have dominated the Pampean Plains during all the Cenozoic. The transfer of amorphous silica from these biotic systems to soils and surface-groundwaters in temperate and aquatic Pampean environments is considered as a condition for the silica biogeochemical processes. This chapter includes the study of plant communities, Mollisols and Fluvisols soils from dry environments, ponds and groundwaters. Soils were analyzed at different scale (mega, meso, micro and submicroscopic), with special emphasis in mineralochemical determinations (petrographic and scanning electron microscopies and EDAXS). The presence of silicophytoliths and their weathering degree were assessed through routine techniques in plants, soils, palaeosoils and sediments. The concentration of silicon was determined in the soil solution, in Los Padres wetland and its tributaries, and in groundwaters. The silicophytolith content represents about 1-18% dry wt. in monocotyledons and 1-4% dry wt. in dicotyledons. The silicophytolith content was higher and the content decreased from the surface (40%) to the subsurface levels (5%) of soils. The weathering of silicophytoliths is an ongoing process in these soils. The balances show that part of the silicon/amorphous silica, moves to the saturated zone and associated waters; but much of the silicon/biogenic amorphous silica re-circulates in the unsaturated zone, where it contributes to form amorphous silica enriched matrix of soil aggregates, which increases and maintains the structural stability of soils. Finally, we concluded that the silicophytoliths affect the terrestrial silica biogeochemical cycle in the Pampean Plain of Argentina.Fil: Osterrieth, Margarita Luisa.     Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure of eight years old children

    The thesis is focused on the use of the test Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure at eight years old children. The theoretical part contains a description of the development of cognitive functions. Further presentation of Rey-Osterrieth and Taylor Complex Figures, the possibility of administration, scoring and interpretation. A significant part presents Developmental Scoring System (DSS - ROCF). Empirical part introduces new tentative standards for children aged eight years, comparison of Rey-Osterrieth and Taylor complex figure, analysis of each phase of the test and elements, and comparison of Osterrieth's scoring system with Developmental Scoring System (DSS - ROCF). Our study revealed the following findings. Flynn effect has not been demonstrated in the Rey- Osterrieth complex figure, while the opposite trend was observed. There were found significant differences between Rey-Osterrieth and Taylor Complex Figures at eight years old children in recall trial, in copy trial can be both figures regarded as equivalent. Analysis of the various phases of the test gives guide for interpretation. A comparison of the two approaches provides an overview of the Development scoring system (DSS - ROCF).
