Comparative analysis of forest buffalo grouping patterns in Central Africa
Presented at the 9th international wildlife ranching symposium: wildlife - the key to prosperity for rural communities, held on 12-16 September 2016 at Hotel Safari & the Safari Court, Windhoek, Namibia in conjuction with the IUCN 2nd African Buffalo Symposium.Understanding the social organization of elusive forest-dwelling ungulates may have important conservation and management implications. We present a comparison of grouping patterns in forest buffalo across different sites and through time in Central African rainforest. We examined five sites: Mbeli Bai and Bonye Bai (Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo), Dzanga Bai and Bai-Hokou (Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, C.A.R.) and Lopé-Okanda National Park (Gabon).Buffalo showed high site fidelity to open areas, including forest clearings. Forest buffalo herds (mean 12 ind. ± SD; range 3-24) were much smaller than records of savanna buffalo herds (mean 350 ind. ± SD; range 12-1500>), but also showed frequently fission-fusion patterns. Data from Mbeli Bai collected from 2012 to 2016confirm a stable presence of two buffalo herds (range 9-10 ind.) with occasional visits by lone individuals. Observations from Dzanga Bai over a period of 10 years (2006-2016) confirm the occurrence of only one buffalo herd (range 8-10ind.). In Bai-Hokou site, a single buffalo herd increased from 16 to 24 individuals during a three year period (2001-2004). Finally in Lopé National Park (a mosaic of savanna and forest fragments), the mean group size for 18 herds monitored from2002 to 2004 was 12±2 ind. (range of means=3–24). We analysed if herd size and herd stability are affected by clearing size, clearing type (e.g. marsh or land) and grass coverage across different sites and through time

Can agrodealers be agents of sustainability transitions in agriculture? Reflections based on the expansion of biological inputs in Mexico
Agrodealers are key players in providing technologies and support services to farmers. Nevertheless, they are generally perceived as reluctant, or at least inactive, in the transition to more sustainable practices. In this article, we examine their contribution to the expansion of biological inputs - biological control, biofertilizers, biostimulants - understood as a set of alternative technologies for reducing the consumption of chemical inputs. Based on a qualitative survey of agrodealers and various agricultural R&D stakeholders in Mexico's Bajio grainproduction region, we show that they play a proactive role in the expansion of these technologies. Faced with a highly competitive environment, including these products in their portfolio enables them to differentiate themselves from their competitors, while continuing to promote the productivity and profitability of their crops to their customers. In some cases, they not only distribute the products of upstream industries, but also become producers themselves of the microorganisms they offer for sale. They are also actively involved in encouraging farmers to acquire and use these technologies, while striving to minimize the disruption that this may cause to their practices. To this end, they provide advice and support, and develop formulas for integrating biological inputs into technical packages that facilitate their adoption. These results call for a reconsideration of the role these actors could play in initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable technologies and practices for the agricultural sector
HKT geometry and de Sitter supergravity
Solutions of five-dimensional minimal de Sitter supergravity admitting Killing spinors are considered. It is shown that the timelike solutions are determined in terms of a four-dimensional hyper-Kähler torsion (HKT) manifold. If the HKT manifold is conformally hyper-Kähler the most general solution can be obtained from a sub-class of supersymmetric solutions of minimal N = 2 ungauged supergravity, by means of a simple transformation. Examples include a multi-BMPV de Sitter solution, describing multiple rotating black holes co-moving with the expansion of the universe. If the HKT manifold is not conformally hyper-Kähler, examples admitting a tri-holomorphic Killing vector field are constructed in terms of certain solutions of three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.
This thesis presents the first complete critical edition of Gisemundus' treatise about gromatic art or geometry, carried out from direct sources (manuscripts: Ripoll 106, ACA and Paris BN 8812) and also indirect sources, those known to us, on wich the author based his work (especially the Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum, Pseudoboethius' Geometria I and Orosius). Our edition offers a praefatio, stemma codicum and conspectus notarum, all written in latin as usual, and a rich critical apparatus wich gives indication of direct sources, previous editions and indirect sources referred to every passage, followed by textual readings in all sources. We also offer a catalan translation with notes, in a bilingual edition format, and it is preceded by an introduction and a study of the work's content. In this introduction we explain the historical transmission of this text, the previous studies and parcial edtions of the work and our edition process. Along this introduction some contribution is made on four important issues: 1- This treatise's contribution to the knowledge of C.A.R. 2- A new vision of the question of Casae Litterarum. 3- An analysis of the historical content of the Discriptio Hispaniae. 4- A few remarks about Gisemundus' language and style
Considerations of uncertainty in robust optimisation of electromagnetic devices
Due to unavoidable uncertainties related to material properties and manufacturing processes, the robustness of the optimal solution must be considered when designing electromagnetic devices. In this paper, the worst-case optimisation (WCO) and the worst-vertex-based WCO are proposed to evaluate the robustness of both performance and constraints under uncertainty. To reduce computing times when searching for the robust solution a predicted objective function is used, obtained with the help of a kriging algorithm which explores the searching space using the concept of rewards. Finally, to avoid some of the shortcomings of WCO, the concept of average performance evaluation is developed

The EXACT description of biomedical protocols
© 2008 The Author(s). This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/uk/) which permits unrestricted non-commercial use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Motivation: Many published manuscripts contain experiment protocols which are poorly described or deficient in information. This means that the published results are very hard or impossible to repeat. This problem is being made worse by the increasing complexity of high-throughput/automated methods. There is therefore a growing need to represent experiment protocols in an efficient and unambiguous way.
Results: We have developed the Experiment ACTions (EXACT) ontology as the basis of a method of representing biological laboratory protocols. We provide example protocols that have been formalized using EXACT, and demonstrate the advantages and opportunities created by using this formalization. We argue that the use of EXACT will result in the publication of protocols with increased clarity and usefulness to the scientific community.
