    Diagnostics and control of fusion-fission hybrid tokamak-based reactors: The technology for measurement systems

    A fusion-fission hybrid (FFH) reactor is a complex machine, which includes a tokamak fusion neutron source and two blankets: the tritium regeneration and the actinide burner zones. These three systems need their own diagnostics and controls. Problems associated with the implementation and integration of control systems call for a simplified technology. In this paper, the criteria determining the diagnostics needs of FFH reactors are reviewed bearing in mind the requirement that the measurements systems should be simple and robust, and their number be limited, considering the space occupied by the blankets. The diagnostics for the tokamak neutron source, including the machine protection and burn control are among the basic equipment. As the fusion and fission blankets can be integrated in a single subsystem their diagnostics must be conceived as an integrated package that includes the means for measuring isotope content, neutron multiplication and effective reactivity of the fission blanket, as well as tritium regeneration in the breeding blanket. The most recent technological developments the field of neutron spectroscopy for fusion and fission blankets are presented, including the diamond and self-powered neutron detectors technology

    Approximate analytic expressions using Stokes model for tokamak polarimetry and their range of validity

    The analysis of the polarimetry measurements has the aim of validating models (De Marco and Segre 1972 Plasma Phys. 14 245), with a careful attention to the clarification of their limits of application. In this paper a new approximation method is introduced, the so-called special constant Omega direction (SCOD), which gives an analytical solution to the polarimetry exact Stokes model equations. The available approximate solutions (including SCOD) of the polarimetry propagation equations are presented, compared and their application limits determined, using a reference tokamak configuration, which is a simplified equilibrium for a circular tokamak. The SCOD approximation is compared successfully to the Stokes model in the context also of equilibria evaluated for two JET discharges. The approximation methods are analytical or very simple mathematical expressions which can also be used in equilibrium codes for their optimization

    The upgraded Collective Thomson Scattering diagnostics of FTU

    The 140 GHz Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostics installed on the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) has been upgraded. The new system now is ready both to detect the thermal CTS radiation (for the first time with the probe frequency below the 1st harmonic electron cyclotron resonance) and to study the impact of possible parametric decay instability (PDI) processes on the received signals. The EC front-steering antenna and transmission system have been complemented with a receiving line that matches a quasi-optical line feeding the homodyne multi-channel radiometer. The scattering volume can be placed in a wide range of locations by means of fast poloidal and toroidal rotations of the two plasma-facing mirrors that have an up-down symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane of the torus. The data acquisition system has been improved adding a new digitizer, with a bandwidth of 5 GHz and a maximum sampling rate of 12.5 GS/s. The possibility of directly sampling and Fourier transforming the down-converted signals greatly improves the suitability of the new diagnostics to carry out thermal ion temperature measurements and to study the competing PDI processes whenever present. © 2015 EURATOM-ENEA.     Avalanche photodiodes operating parameter optimization for the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade Thomson scattering system (abstract)

    Measured figures (linearity, avalanche gain, frequency response, and noise) of the avalanche photodiodes (APD) detectors used on the FTU Thomson scattering system (FTU-TS) are reported. This investigation on the APD figures is motivated by the necessity of knowing their values over a wide range of input signals, and also of checking the validity of McIntyre model of APD noise, since using this model the experimental signal-to-noise ratio is calculated. From the noise analysis, a method of optimization of the detection system sensitivity is derived, leading to the optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio over the entire FTU-TS system. © 1997, American Institute of Physics.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
