Despite all that, in 2022 politicians are still trying to forcefully remove the people who don’t confirm to the norms: five months before the invasion on Ukraine, Vladimir Putin said that being transgender is “almost a crime against humanity”, in Hungary there is a ban for “homosexual propaganda”, in Poland there are “LGBT free zones”.
Can similar attempts succeed? The show that uses the novel Orlando (1928) and a movie based on it (1992) as its base is trying to face the embarrassment, reluctance, and hatred towards being different. In a journey through centuries, lives, and experiences of cisgender, trans-, and non-binary artists invited to join the project, we ask: is being different really as rare as we think it is? And maybe each of us is different in their own way? Isn’t every transformation and transition we go through in life being different?
Do you really know who you are? Are binary divisions the answer to today’s threats? And maybe in this difference there is a promise of fun, revolution, and… a new, better order and world?
One of the performers, Filipka Rutkowska, reflecting on the work wrote:
Orlando is a love of change.
Orlando is a value worth taking care of.
‘It’ is Orlando.
Orlando is taking on different genders while still being the same person.
Orlando is experiencing the mystery of transition – and treating this transition as a source of knowledge.
Orlando is thinking about the birth of a new mind by using old thoughts and then reminiscing about the thoughts that are already gone.
Orlando is the acceptance of losing a part of yourself and the readiness to get a new one.
Orlando is the curiosity of the world.
Orlando is a simultaneous loneliness among people and finding understanding amongst them.
Orlando is entering a new state of focus, without knowing the laws that rule this state.

No full textopenDalla fine degli anni ’60 a quella degli anni ‘70 si sviluppa un’ampia produzione artistica attraverso i diversi media basata sull’Orlando furioso, complici i cinquecento anni dalla nascita di Ariosto e la natura stessa del poema, che continua ad ispirare anche gli autori della contemporaneità dopo una secolare tradizione di adattamenti. Gli adattamenti più rilevanti del poema ariostesco comprendono lo spettacolo teatrale Orlando furioso, di Edoardo Sanguineti e Luca Ronconi messo in scena a partire dal 1969, spartiacque per la drammaturgia italiana, e il conseguente sceneggiato televisivo per la RAI, messo in onda nel 1975, ad opera del solo Luca Ronconi ed in cinque episodi. L'opera di Italo Calvino è ampiamente ispirata da Ariosto, oltre a fare parte del suo canone. Ad esempio il suo Orlando furioso di Ludovico Ariosto raccontato da Italo Calvino (1970) ne è un vero e proprio rifacimento, mentre ne Il castello dei destini incrociati (1973) riprende le figure di Astolfo e Orlando, ne Il cavaliere inesistente (1959) riutilizza il materiale cavalleresco e il personaggio di Bradamante. Nel 1975 Pino Zac pubblica la graphic novel Orlando furioso con intento parodico ma piuttosto fedele al poema.From the late 1960s to the 1970s, a wide artistic production developed through various media based on Orlando Furioso, thanks to the five hundredth anniversary of Ariosto's birth and the very nature of the poem, which continues to inspire contemporary authors after a centuries-old tradition of adaptations. The most relevant adaptations of Ariosto's poem include Orlando Furioso's play, by Edoardo Sanguineti and Luca Ronconi staged since 1969, innovative for Italian dramaturgy, and the RAI television drama, broadcast in 1975, by Luca Ronconi and in five episodes. Italo Calvino's work is largely inspired by Ariosto, as well as being part of his canon. For exemple Orlando furioso di Ludovico Ariosto raccontato da Italo Calvino (1970) is a rewriting, and Il castello dei destini incrociati (1973) he reuses Astolfo's and Orlando characters, in Il cavaliere inesistente (1959) he takes from the poem the chivalric material and Bradamante's character.
