Pandemic-Driven Evolution: The Reshaping of Coworking Spaces in the (Post) COVID-19 Era
In recent years, coworking spaces, tailored for location-independent professionals, have flourished. However, the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered their conventional operations, necessitating adaptive measures like social distancing and an enhanced focus on remote collaboration. This narrative literature review delves into the pandemic’s repercussions on coworking, emphasizing potential long-term adaptations like digitalization and hybrid frameworks. Through extensive database searches, key observations include declines in revenues and occupancy, the onset of health-focused protocols, a shift to virtual community events, flexible membership contracts, and an uptick in digital service offerings. Despite reduced physical interactions, digital platforms played a crucial role in sustaining member engagement. The future of coworking may lean towards region-specific models, advanced technology integration, and a deeper understanding of resilient coworking communities. This review aims to elucidate the pandemic’s multifaceted impact on coworking, spotlighting pivotal areas for further research and offering insights for real estate professionals navigating a post-pandemic landscape
Collaborative communities as a selling point? From community-driven to service-purposed coworking spaces
Coworking spaces emerged in the mid-2000s as collaborative workplaces that actively supported teleworkers and self-employed knowledge workers who shared various (work) environments to interlace themselves in supportive networks, tackle isolation, positively influence well-being, and collaboratively participate in knowledge-sharing activities. However, with the swift popularisation of the coworking model by 2020, newly established flexible office spaces have begun to refer to themselves as community-based workplaces even though they lacked the capacity to support their users’ interactions and collaborative work. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to explore how coworking spaces have transformed from community-based environments to a flexible place of work where establishing a collaborative community is not an organisational priority. The following exploratory research investigates a sample of 13 coworking spaces in Prague, the Czech Republic, and considers their capacity for supporting interactions and collaborative processes between their users. The results uncovered significant differences between coworking spaces, their spatial designs, the presence of mediation mechanisms, and the frequency of interactions between users, and suggest that the handful of sampled coworking environments misuse the notion of community. In that context, the following study indicates that contemporary coworking spaces can revert to community washing to deliberately pursue economic self-interest rather than support decentralised peer-to-peer exchange that would lead to developing a coworking community
Challenges of remote work practices in China under the dynamic zero-COVID policy: Case study of an E-commerce company.
The Post- COVID-19 policy bring a huge impact on people’s work and life. Since the COVID-19 restrictions no longer exist, China is undergoing a transformation regarding remote work. Without lockdown, the employers need to decide if they would go back to the entirely off-site work mode or keep the remote work mode. The thesis’s aim is to o study remote work after COVID control, employee attitudes; the changes in their work and lives; and the difficulties for remote offices in Chinses SMEs. The goal is to fill in the research gap and provide some reference significance for those SMEs owners to decide. The study is divided into two parts, the theoretical part and the practical part. In the practical part, the research conducted qualitative data research method, conducting 14 semi-structured interviews with the employees of a case E-commerce company. The author used a purposive sampling method, selecting samples from 3 different departments, which are sales, IT and finance. In terms of data analysis, the author analyzed the data via thematic analysis. The key findings of the research showed that employees hold positive attitudes toward remote work and expect to develop in the future. From the individual perspective, remote work is changing family well-being, commute time, communication, work time and workload. There are distractions which also change the employee’s mind to change, for example, improving their living places or hardware. From the organizational perspective, they are changing the support for remote work. The challenges from the employees during remote work are miscommunication, work-life conflict, and insufficient hardware. In addition, they described their future expectation for remote work development of this company. According to the key findings, recommendations for the company in three aspects were proposed. What’s more, limitations of this research are claimed, and suggestions for additional research avenues are provided in the thesis.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
