Carolyn Spivey with Jimmy Haynie on guitar
This 1951 photograph shows Carolyn Spivey performing on CBS WTOP in Washington, D. C. with Jimmy Haynie on guitar. Founder and director of the Mountain Youth Jamboree, Hubert H. Hayes (1901-1964) auditioned and directed youth to perform in folk dance, music, and folk and ballad singing. The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University
Overview of the 2019 open-source IR replicability challenge (OSIRRC 2019)
The Open-Source IR Replicability Challenge (OSIRRC 2019), organized as a workshop at SIGIR 2019, aims to improve the replicability of ad hoc retrieval experiments in information retrieval by gathering a community of researchers to jointly develop a common Docker specification and build Docker images that encapsulate a diversity of systems and retrieval models. We articulate the goals of this workshop and describe the "jig" that encodes the Docker specification. In total, 13 teams from around the world submitted 17 images, most of which were designed to produce retrieval runs for the TREC 2004 Robust Track test collection. This exercise demonstrates the feasibility of orchestrating large, community-based replication experiments with Docker technology. We envision OSIRRC becoming an ongoing community-wide effort to ensure experimental replicability and sustained progress on standard test collections.Web Information System
The native and metastable defects and their joint density of states in hydrogenated amorphous silicon obtained from the improved dual beam photoconductivity method
In this study, undoped hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films deposited under moderate dilution ratios of silane by radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) have been investigated using steady-state photoconductivity and improved dual beam photoconductivity (DBP) methods to identify changes in multiple gap states in annealed and light-soaked states. Four different gap states were identified in annealed state named as A, B, C, and X states. The peak energy positions of these Gaussian distributions are consistent with those recently identified by Fourier transform photocurrent spectroscopy (FTPS). After in situ light soaking, their density increases with different rates as peak energy positions and half-widths remain unaffected. The electron-occupied A and B states located below the dark Fermi level and their density and ratios in the annealed and light-soaked states correlate well with those defects detected by time-domain pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments. The A, B, and X states located closer to the middle of the bandgap anneal out at room temperature in dark and define the "fast"states. However, the C states show no sign of room temperature annealing such that they must define the "slow"states in undoped a-Si:H. The results found in this study indicate that the anisotropic disordered network is a more appropriate model than previously proposed defect models based on the continuous random network to define the nanostructure of undoped a-Si:H, where multiple defects, D0 and non-D0 defects, can be identified by using the improved DBP method. Review of recent advances in nucleophilic C–F bond-forming reactions at sp3 centers
AbstractBecause of the broad utility of organofluorine compounds, efficient nucleophilic fluorination reactions are of high synthetic value. This is because fluoride is generally less costly, more readily available as its positron-emitting isotope (18F−), and has a higher specific activity than its ‘F+’ counterparts. New reactions for the construction of CF bonds, that make use of contemporary chemical methods, have only lately begun to emerge. This review provides a brief summary of some of the recent disclosures in transition metal-catalyzed fluorination reactions at sp3-hybridized carbon centers with nucleophilic fluoride sources
Dockerizing indri for OSIRRC 2019
The Lemur Project was set up in 2000 by the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval at UMass Amherst. It is one of the longest lasting open-source projects in the information retrieval (IR) research community. Among the released tools is Indri, a popular search engine that was designed for language-modeling based approaches to IR. For OSIRRC 2019 we dockerized Indri and added support for the Robust04, Core18 and GOV2 test collections.Web Information System
ABSTRACT Title: Currency risk management in operating exposure - a quantitative study of Swedish listed companies. Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. Author: Gustaf Bergquist and Jimmy Mattsson. Supervisor: Peter Lindberg. Date: 2015 - June. Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine the existence of differences and similarities between Swedish listed companies’ management of operating exposure to currency risk, depending on segment affiliation at the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Method: This study is of quantitative nature with a deductive approach. Data have been collected through Internet based questionnaires, which later have been set against previous research and theories. The results have been analyzed through correlation- analysis and presented along with the results. Result & Conclusions: The results of the study shows that the majority of the differences and similarities in terms of managing currency risk can be linked to segment affiliation. The conclusion drawn in the study shows that the tendency to protect the company’s exposure to currency risk and to manage foreign currency risk internally are highest among companies on Large Cap and that the tendency to request help externally are greatest among companies on Small Cap. Regarding the presence of size related similarities, the study shows that these are relatively small. Suggestions for future research: It would be interesting to complement the survey with a few interviews in order to provide a better understanding regarding the hedging process. Another potential suggestion for further research is to expand the number of respondents and include the Danish Stock Exchange that is similar to the Swedish Stock Exchange in order to find differences and similarities between the two Stock exchanges. Contribution of the thesis: The theoretical contribution can help provide a deeper understanding of currency risk management and therefore serve as an explanatory variable of the outcomes related to this area. The practical contribution can have great relevance for smaller companies that are in the construction phase of its risk management and therefore want to know what options are at their disposal. Key words: Currency risk, risk management, operating exposure, hedging methods, differences and similarities, segment affiliation
An Approach for Southwestern Dialect Instruction for Communication Performance
Goal: To enhance the realism of various communication performances, students can attempt to adapt dialects appropriate for their characters.
Some performances require the use of Southwestern Dialect, commonplace in some areas of Texas, such as west, central, and rural Texas. Such was the case in the production Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, for which the author created this approach in her role as dialect coach for student actors. The overall aims of this approach were (a) that student actors would incorporate central traits of Southwestern Dialect into their vocal performances, (b) that these central traits would be consistent within student actors across scenes, as well as across student actors in their shared interactions, and that (c) native users of Southwestern Dialect would perceive the speech of the student actors as a reasonable approximation of authentic use of these central traits
Film boiling over wedges, cones and spheres
A theoretical treatment of stable film boiling heat transfer was carried out for different geometries such as the wedge, cone and sphere, using the mathematical technique of boundary-layer theory. By the use of the theory proposed by Frederking and Clark, and Witte, closed-form analytical expressions were developed under reasonable assumptions. By the analysis made, it is possible to determine the heat transfer in forced convection film boiling on a wedge and cone. The analysis also shows that the Nusselt number for predicting the heat transfer coefficient depends on the Reynolds number, Prandtl number, the apex angle and on another dimensionless quantity h[subscript fg]/C[subscript p][delta]T. The theory for film boiling heat transfer from spheres and cylinders to a saturated liquid was re-examined with the objective of correcting the existing theory to account for the discrepancies between experiment and theory. The experimental observance of the wavy nature of the liquid-vapor interface, heretofore assumed smooth, has been fully taken into account, although the results were improved by 1-2% only. Previous investigations so far have neglected the heat transfer contribution from the wake region thinking the film thickness too large for conduction to be significant. Here the author finds that apart from convection and radiation, simple conduction heat transfer in the wake region enhances the previous results by 42%. Convection in the wake region was also considered.Mechanical Engineering, Department o
A theory for cavitation in impellers
An approximate theory for cavitation in pump impellers is developed on the basis of a one-dimensional potential flow model. The theory incorporates the unsteady term occurring in Bernoulli's equation and accounts for blockage effects due to vane thickness. A comparison of the theoretical results with experimental data from mixed flow impeller tests shows good agreement near the condition of zero incidence. On the basis of the theoretical results a mechanism of cavitation breakdown is proposed. (Author)supported by various Department of Defense
