Implementing the AIFMD: Success or failure? ECMI Commentary No. 34, 28 March 2013
No full textThis commentary considers the implementation of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) by the European Commission. The AIFMD creates an internal market for asset management and as an endeavour to develop market-based finance is an important piece of legislation for the European economy. The author, Mirzha de Manuel Aramendía, considers the implementation of some of the provisions that raised concern among industry participants. He finds that, on balance, a practical and flexible approach to implementation has been followed that should help secure the success of the framework, which at present is still uncertain. The commentary also considers the remuneration guidelines adopted recently by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). It encourages EU and national authorities to commit to the success of the AIFMD framework, as part of a broader effort to develop capital markets and reduce the historical reliance of the European economy on bank finance
THE DIGITAL O&P WORKSHOP
No full textDigitalisation is the megatrend in healthcare, not only since the pandemic. We are two European digital health experts and industry leaders in the field of orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) and in this article we explored what are the underlying trends driving the adoption of digitalisation for customisation of prosthetics & orthotics. We showed that several trends in 3D image capture (input step), 3D modelling (processing step) and 3D printing (output step) currently converge and thus fuel the rapid transformation of the O&P industry. In short outlooks, we rated the probability and timing of adoption rates across the upcoming couple of years. We furthermore reviewed the impact of boundary conditions set by regulators as well as the reimbursement system. Towards the end of this article, we outlined a digital scenario of the near future by following around an orthotist during her work. We finished with a call-to-action targeting regulators, payors, prosthetists/orthotists, and patients to enable such a desirable future.

5 kHz Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation: Lack of Cortical Excitability Changes When Grouped in a Theta Burst Pattern
No full textBackground: Suprathreshold transcranial single pulse electrical stimulation (tES) is painful and not applicable in a repetitive mode to induce plastic after-effects. Objective: In order to circumvent this pain problem, we applied here a 5 kHz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) theta burst protocol with a field intensity of up to 10 mA to the primary motor cortex (M1). Furthermore, we were interested in finding out whether electrical theta burst stimulation (eTBS) is able to induce lasting after-effects on cortical plasticity. Methods: Three different eTBS protocols were applied at 5 mA in a sham controlled, double blinded cross-over design on the M1 region of seventeen healthy subjects during the first part of the study. The second study part consists of three different eTBS protocols ranging from 5 mA to 10 mA and 1 ms to 5 ms sinusoidal bursts, applied to the M1 region of 14 healthy subjects. Results: We were able to apply all eTBS protocols in a safe manner, with only six subjects reporting mild side effects related to the stimulation. However, no eTBS protocol induced lasting effects on muscle- evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes when compared to sham stimulation. Significant inhibition of MEP amplitude was only seen in the lower intensity protocols as compared to baseline. Conclusion: eTBS is a safe method to apply high frequency tACS with up to 10 mA intensity. Future studies need to explore the parameter space to a larger extent in order to assure efficacy

Something of that authority from a bygone era permeates much of the figure of Manuel Trillo de Leyva, a key figure in Seville\u27s architecture in the second half of the 20th century, who has been the subject of this recent monograph promoted by the COAS. For students in the late 2000s, shortly after his untimely death, Manuel Trillo was the name of the auditorium at the School of Architecture, a name that professors imbued with a halo of admiration and that gradually revealed itself to be a life of its own, that of the author of several of the city\u27s landmark buildings. The first of these was precisely that same stage, designed as a result of a competition won together with José Garrido when they were still students.A Denis Diderot se le atribuye haber dicho que los hombres del pasado tienen sobre nosotros la gran ventaja de no haber conocido el peso de la Antigüedad. Algo de esa autoridad de un tiempo anterior impregna mucho de la figura de Manuel Trillo de Leyva, clave para la arquitectura sevillana de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, que ha sido objeto de esta reciente monografía impulsada por el COAS.
