    Chinese literary works translated into Baba Malay: a bibliographical study

    Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency.     The gaming industry has been progressively developing. Beginning with simple game systems running on computers with limited random-access memory, it has grown into games with realistic graphics and sophisticated algorithms running based on advanced technologies. Due to the steady growth and increasing popularity in computer and video games, it has been increasingly challenging for developers to build games that are constantly compelling to their target audiences. The primary purpose of the final year project is thus to design and develop a high-action action or adventure game based on the recent trends in the game industry. This project is a collaboration among 4 members – Ocampo Jessica Anne Pare, Liang Wen Jun, Daniel Kurniadi. The author is solely in charge of the main character development. This includes Character Modelling, and the implementation of Game Mechanics related to the Main Character.     Over the years, Singapore is experiencing an increase in silver generation. By 2030, the nation will join 33 others as a “super-aged” country, where one out of five people are aged 65 and older. Given this rise, we can also expect an increase in the prevalence rate of mental disease like dementia. Most of the mental diseases are incurable. However, researchers have shown that dementia can be prevented or slow down by having early preventive measures. One of the best preventive measures is the use of technological devices like iPad and tablets. Mobile application has the ability to stimulate brain in a fun and interactive environment. The objective of this project is to create mobile game applications that can help to improve a dementia patient’s condition. Unlike many other games in the market, games developed in this project are able to capture more in-game behaviour of the player. The data captured from the game will be passed to the PEAR database to do further analysis on the patient’s condition. The games developed in this project will be added into the current PEAR system. There are 6 main categories of game in PEAR system; Speed, Memory, Attention, Flexibility, Problem Solving and Mind-eye Coordination. In this project, the author has developed 2 Android tablet games. The first game is called RevertBack. This is a new game that is categorised under memory category. The goal of RevertBack is to tackle the problem of misplacing item. The game trains the memory skill of the patient by testing them on getting the items back to their original positions after mixing up the items order. Unlike normal games in the market, RevertBack is able to capture more in game behaviour like the number of swaps, item category, whether hints are activated. The second game, PuzzleV2, is a revamped version of a created game called Puzzle. This game is categorised under flexibility and mind-eye coordination. The game trains the recognition skill of the patient by testing them on re-building a picture using a jigsaw puzzle game. Both games are designed under the consideration of elderly. The use of larger fonts and vibrant colours improves readability for elderly. Furthermore, both games are also available in English and Chinese to cater to a wider range of elderly user. Success in reining in huge budget deficits, both at the federal and provincial levels, has restored Canada's finances. At the same time, it has transformed Canada from being one of the most fiscally profligate to one of the most fiscally responsible countries in the developed world.     Enhancing finger vein recognition systems through local feature aggregation and multiple finger fusion

    Finger Vein Recognition system is increasingly used for personal recognition. However, unimodal biometrics systems suffer from several limitations, leading to reduced reliability and effectiveness compared to multimodal biometrics systems. This study implements a multi-instance biometric system by leveraging multiple fingers as the input source to enhance the robustness of the finger vein recognition. The works first employs various preprocessing to improve image quality. These techniques include Watershed Segmentation, Morphological Operations, Histogram Equalization, and resizing. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is then used to extract the features from each finger vein. This study utilizes two fusion methods, including Feature Fusion and Local Feature Aggregation (LFA) to combine results from multiple finger sources. An experimental setup is implemented to evaluate the performance of both fusion methods. The experimental result indicates that the proposed system using LFA achieves higher performance with the lowest Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0.22% and 0.25% for the UTFVP dataset and SDUMLA-HMT dataset, respectively. This emphasizes the ability of the LFA to enhance the robustness of the finger vein recognition system, contributing to future research

    Protection against lead-free solder in wave-soldering by Ti/TiC coatings prepared by filtered cathodic arc deposition

    Lead-free solder is increasingly used in the wave soldering but corrosion of the stainless steel holders frequently occurs and produces deleterious effects. To enhance the service life, a Ti/TiC coating is deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) on the stainless steel holders. The morphology, structure, composition, microhardness, wear resistance, electron chemical corrosion, and wetting properties against solder are investigated. The results show that not only good frictional properties and corrosion resistance are achieved by the Ti/TiC coatings, but also good tin repelling and hydrophobic characteristics are observed. The Ti/TiC coating provides excellent protection against corrosion of lead-free solder in wave soldering. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.     Dynamic transition in the discharge current between gas-dominant discharge and self-sputtering in high-power impulse magnetron sputtering

    An unstable stage is observed from the discharge current during the transition from gas-dominant discharge to the self-sputtering dominant regime in high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). The phenomenon and the formation mechanism are time dependent and there is a dynamic transition between the two stable stages. The threshold of the high stable discharge is investigated at different pressure and hybrid DC discharge. According to the derivation of the discharge current, the temperature in the discharge is found to play a major role in the dynamic transition at moderate voltage. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.     Resilience and well-being among children of migrant parents in South-East Asia

    There has been little systematic empirical research on the well-being of children in transnational households in South-East Asia—a major sending region for contract migrants. This study uses survey data collected in 2008 from children aged 9, 10 and 11 and their caregivers in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam (N=1,498). Results indicate that while children of migrant parents, especially migrant mothers, are less likely to be happy compared to children in non-migrant households, greater resilience in child well-being is associated with longer durations of maternal absence. There is no evidence for a direct parental migration effect on school enjoyment and performance. The analyses highlight the sensitivity of results to the dimension of child well-being measured and who makes the assessment.Peer reviewe

    Tin repellence on wave-soldering stainless steel holders coated with Ti/TiC/DLC

    Lead-free solder is widely used in the industry, especially in wave soldering. However, the stainless steel holders used in wave soldering are prone to corrosion by the lead-free solder due to increased reactive wetting. Besides, owing to the high affinity between the holders and solder, they are often used to take solder out of the container. To improve tin repellence and the mechanical properties of the stainless steel holders, Ti/TiC and Ti/TiC/DLC coatings are deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) and plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (PIII&D). The morphology, structure, composition, microhardness, wear resistance, electrochemical properties, and wetting characteristics are investigated systematically. The DLC coating, which has an amorphous structure and I-D/I-G ratio of about 0.55, further enhances the frictional properties, corrosion resistance, and hydrophobic characteristics of the Ti/TiC structure. The surface-modified holders show excellent tin repellence in wave soldering. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
