Vulnerability Assessment of Historical Churches in Banat Seismic Region, Romania
Romania is a country located in Europe, with moderate seismicity and a very large number of historical churches. Banat region is the second most important seismic area in the country, located in the western part, characterized by shallow earthquakes of crustal type. In Banat area there are many historic churches, both Orthodox and Catholic. The majority of the churches are mostly with a central nave, made in masonry, with masonry vaults and complex wooden frameworks. They also present architectural-artistic details, such as paintings made by Austrian, Serbian and Romanian painters. Many of them have suffered different types of structural damages after past earthquakes. The damage types are different, depending on the type of earthquake and on the architectural conformation. The present paper investigates the seismic vulnerability for six historic churches in Banat area and presents the results of various empirical and numerical analysis and investigations. The analysis identifies the specific vulnerable points of the historic religious structures, illustrating the seismic vulnerability of the churches with central nave in Banat seismic area. Moreover, the paper brings out the importance of investigating the seismic behavior of religious buildings, as they are permanent part of each local community, and they present an important cultural value
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Seismic assessment of Romanian Orthodox masonry churches in the Banat area through a multi-level analysis framework
This paper aims to show some results of seismic assessment of Romanian Orthodox existing masonry churches, by extending the multi-level approach proposed by the Italian directive for seismic risk evaluation of cultural heritage. To this scope, a sample of six existing churches is examined, belonging to a church typology characterized by a single vaulted nave and a bell tower incorporated into the main façade. All churches considered in this study are located in the Banat region, which is an area with a medium–high seismic hazard. Firstly, territorial Level of Valuations (LV0 and LV1) are conducted on the churches sample examined. Afterwards, local (LV2) and global (LV3) valuations are performed on a case study, the Învierea Domnului church, assumed representative of all the churches sample under consideration. In particular, local analyses are performed on some church architectural portions with the kinematic limit analysis. Whereas, global analyses are conducted with non-linear push-over approach. Comments and comparisons of the obtained results are reported for each LV examined
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Seismic assessment of typical historical masonry churches in the Banat region, Romania - Part II
This work focuses on the built heritage in Romania, with particular attention to five Orthodox masonry churches located in the Banat region, whose structural configuration is characterized by a unique nave and a bell tower included into the main façade. In a companion paper the seismic numerical investigations of Romanian masonry churches according to the Romanian regulations is presented. In this paper, firstly, a seismic performance comparison of the five churches with simplified risk assessment methods is conducted. Then, the preliminary results of a case study, obtained with both a macro-elements approach and a FEM model, are illustrated and commented. The numerical results here discussed belong to on-going research campaign addressed to highlight the main characteristics of the seismic performance of the Romanian churches, also including the damage observed under seismic events, as well as to compare the results to each other
Simplified Vulnerability Assessment of Historical Churches in Banat Seismic Region, Romania
Romania, a mid-eastern European country, has a moderate seismicity and a large stock of historical buildings and churches. One of the most important seismic areas of the country is the Banat area, which ranks as the second most seismic area in Romania, with shallow earthquakes of crustal type. Many Orthodox and Catholic churches can be found in the area, the majority of them having a central nave. The churches are built in masonry, with vaults and wooden frameworks, and they present valuable architectural-artistic details, including paintings made by recognized painters. Various forms of structural damage appeared to the historical churches after past earthquakes, depending on the architectural configuration. This paper illustrates a study made on six historic churches in the Banat region, to investigate seismic vulnerability with simplified methods. The study highlights the most vulnerable points of the historic religious structures and the importance of investigating in a quick and simplified way the seismic behavior of such important buildings for the local community. Moreover, the main novelty of the paper is the highlighting of the importance of the sustainability aspect in the process of heritage preservation, as simplified assessment procedures are essential for more resilient risk reduction policies
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
