    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     In this study, we have estimated the number of total mortality (T-mortality), cardiovascular morbidity (CV-mortality), respiratory mortality (R-mortality), hospital admissions due to cardiovascular diseases (HA-CVD), respiratory diseases (HA-RD), chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) due to exposure to particulate matter less than 10 μm (PM10), 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in western Iran in 2016. The World Health Organization (WHO) method was used to assess the mortality and morbidity among the exposed people. The results showed that about 3.9% CM (95% CI: 2.9–7.8%), 3.9% HA-RD (95% CI: 2.4–7.8%) and 4.4% HA-CVD (95% CI: 3.0–6.8%) for ambient PM10 and about 7.3% TM (95% CI: 4.2–9.7%), 12.1% CM (95% CI: 3.5–14.6%) and 3.0% RM (95% CI: 0–6.3%) for PM2.5 are respectively attributed to concentrations exceeding 10 μg/m3. Furthermore, 3.2% HA-COPD (95% CI: 0–5.04%) and 4.2% AMI (95% CI: 1.6–4.3%) can be attributed to SO2 concentrations greater than 10 μg/m3, respectively. To reduce the adverse health effect of PM, health advices provided by health authorities should be given to general population especially vulnerable people such as people with chronic lung and heart pathologies, elderly and children during the dusty days

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Reliability and performance analysis of a fault tolerant data handling protocol for aerospace applications

    Data communication inside the satellite is one of the most important factors in satellite design. For this purpose, a variety of protocols have been developed in recent years. Controller Area Network (CAN) is one of the well-developed protocols to be used in the On-Board Data Handling (OBDH) systems for communication and geosynchronous satellites. Nonetheless, for aerospace applications which demand radiation hardened integrated circuits, a full featured stand-alone RadHard CAN controller is unavailable. HDL (Hardware Description Language) based IP (Intellectual Property) Cores which are widely developed to be implemented on Rad-Hard FPGAs are more attractive. This paper proposes a novel fault tolerant CAN controller based on FPGAs to provide on-board data handling requirements of the communication satellites. We outline some practical topologies and discuss their complexities and reliability. Despite the fact that the most famous methods like TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy), are very common among designers, the reliability analyses show that these methods are unable to tolerate single upsets in routing matrixes. This paper proposes a robust data bus controller based on dual duplex redundancy on FPGAs. The fault injection experiments reveal that the proposed approach represents better performance respective to the conventional hardware redundancy. Furthermore, the experiments show that the capability of tolerating SEU effects by the proposed method is increased up to 7.17 times with respect to a regular design. The proposed architecture imposes 16.26% and 5.2% overhead in the required resources and the operating frequency in comparison to the regular TMR method

    An FPGA-based design approach for microsatellites telemetry subsystem

    The Tele-command and Telemetry (TT&C) subsystems are one of the vital components in satellites. Commanding, managing and data sampling from different sections of the satellite are performed through the TT&C subsystem. The telemetry and Tele-command parts of this subsystem could be implemented cooperatively with or separately from each other. Based on the satellite requirements, its mission and orbital lifetime and cost various approaches may be used in order to implement this subsystem. Furthermore, nowadays, the development of satellite subsystems based on commercial devices because of their low cost and accessibility is more attractive. However, their endurance for harsh space environment remains as a severe challenge. The Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), one of the best-developed commercial devices, are most successfully option in this application field. Nevertheless, the system designing methodology and the reliability of the implemented system on FPGAs remain as two major concerns. In this paper designing method and implementation result of Telemetry subsystem on field programmable gate array (FPGA) is presented. The implemented subsystem successfully passed environmental test according to ECSS standard. Furthermore, flight data confirm the feasibility of the presented FPGA based design methodology
