We have witnessed a quantum leap in information communication technology (ICT). It is now pervasive with our everyday life and this has resulted in recent development of many new applications using ICT. Governments and Private Sectors have capitalized on this technological advancement in a variety of applications. Essentially technology is applied to increase efficiency and effectiveness. In some business entities, it can be used as a competitive advantage. The Malaysian government too has applied technology to gain the benefit and one of these is using multi-application smartcard which included personal identification. This is followed by other governments from various countries that launched a multipurpose identification smartcard. However, at the same time, being in the forefront has its own shortfall especially in the area of ensuring that smartcard is protected from any security breach. MyKad is a multipurpose smartcard which was introduced by the Malaysian government to identify its citizens. It is of paramount importance that the Malaysian government attain the public confidence to ensure that MyKad is 'tampered proof so as the public can accept in using the applications and services affiliated with it. To achieve this, MyKad must be evaluated and pass through an acceptable level of security certification process and be assessed to the various types of possible security breach such as information tampering and the cloning of MyKad. This thesis therefore proposed a new MyKad Testing Strategy model for logical attacks. Furthermore, a comprehensive security assessment framework was proposed in the implementation of the certification of MyKad aligning with the framework of Common Criteria (CC). In view of this, the proposed framework follows the requirements of Vulnerabilities Assessment test (AVA) of ISO/IEC 15408-3 of CC. The objective of this assessment test is to evaluate the potential factors that potentially threaten the security of MyKad. The security assessment test of MyKad includes the aspects of security of information stored and evaluates the mechanism of handling the open data and providing application access to work with MyKad in the secured manner for enabling multiple applications. The security test assessment deployed on MyKad was using the test strategy from Alain Merle (2005) and adopting the common criteria (CC, 2009). Four vulnerabilities have been disclosed from the security assessment of MyKad done in this study. The vulnerabilities are firstly, Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) can be collected from MyKad; next, open data can be read using the APDU commands; thirdly, the open data can be written to another sample of smartcard by cloning the data in MyKad; and lastly, the assessment has successfully uncover the communication vulnerability of MyKad with Card Acceptance Devices (CAD) towards being tapped. The significance of this research will benefit the government; public and private sector by proposing testing strategy model and security assessment framework for MyKad. As for the future extension of this study, researcher should emphasize on the development of a new generic Software Development Kit (SDK), standards for Card Acceptance Device (CAD) and identification of certification body for CAD and SDK

Development of static var compensator controller for experimental purposes / Nor Azmi Omar

    No full text
This project is a development of a computer controlled static Var compensator (SVC) for educational experimental purposes. The system developed, uses fixed capacitor banks as available in the power laboratory incorporated with a newly constructed thyristor controlled reactors (FC-TCR) for reactive compensation experiments. It can simulate a fluctuation of terminal voltage subject to load variations and improves power factor of the supply system. The controller makes use of a personal computer driven by software written in Quick-Basic. Through continuous development this could be extended to incorporate other features such as various control configurations as discussed in the work of Chang et al[4], allowing flexibility in experimentation that could be carried out by students to enhance the study of reactive compensation. The control circuit detects the zero-crossing of each line-to-line voltage waveform and upon receiving voltage signal from digital to analog converter (DAC), generates the controlled gating pulses for the triggering hardware. The thyristors used are back to back pairs and the conduction angles of all the thyristors are the same and vary accordingly with the serial command signal from the computer. Upon conduction thyristor controlled reactors generate a desirable variable susceptances required for compensating. A feedback circuit is also developed to stabilise the SVC system as it is inherently tolerant to changes in the control element as well as the controlled system and can be made very accurate

A Smart Card is a standard credit card-sized plastic token within which a microchip has been embedded, hence making it effect a microcomputer. The chip is the engine room of the smart card, and indeed is what makes it 'smart'. MyKad or the Government Multipurpose Card (GMPC) is part of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) flagship initiatives. The project commenced shortly after our Prime Minister unveiled his vision of a Multipurpose Card in 1996. Now After 5 years of intense research and development, it finally arrived at the conclusion of the pilot implementation phase of the project in which 2 Million cards will be issued. As of the end of 2001, MyKad will be in the hand of 1 Million citizens. As there was no other similar system deployed in other part of the world, this paper will give the overview of the GMPC project as well as MayKad, basic technology of the Smart Card, its benefits, the architecture and technology. Throughout the paper, the particular aspect of legal issue in implementation will be discuss briefly and it will also features the frame work for National Roll Out (NRO), challenge and risk and critical successful factor in the implementation of the project

This is a study about the importance and tendency on Halal products and services in Malaysia and Global Market. In global market, consumer base for Halal products is around 1.7 billion people worth more than 2.3 trillion dollar. It makes the Halal market vitally important emerging sector that should not be overlooked. From the market perspective, traditional target market remains in Asia and Middle East, however due to the effect of globalization there are significant development of market size for Halal market in Europe and USA. Besides that in Western country, most Halal product is still not readily available for UK market. We see this phenomena applying not only on food items. Personal hygiene and healthcare products, toiletries and cosmetics are all appearing as Halal options. Once Halal is understood as a lifestyle choice, the range of option for Halal product will increase exponentially. In Malaysia, Halal products is not a big issue as we can find Halal food everywhere from the street market up to the high end chain. The competition can be considered intense in the market
