Augustana Seniors Fall 1884: Augustus G. Olsson

No full text
Augustus G. Olsson was a senior at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, in the fall of 1884. His name appears in the college catalog of 1884 – 1885, along with his birthplace, the year of his birth, and a few other facts. From this start, we researched the genealogy and family history of Augustus Olsson. This paper contains a short biography of Augustus Olsson, a report on his ancestors, a report on his descendants, and some open questions for further research

In a lifelong journey of self-conscious reevaluations the Swedish geographer Gunnar Olsson has pursued his core theme of human interaction in search of its geographical essences. Marked by a refusal to limit his geography to the study of visible things, Olsson has developed an original yet consistent cartography of how humans find their way into the unknown by relying on cultural maps which treats the invisible as if it were visible. What unfolds in his geography is an understanding of modern reason as a form of cartographical reason founded on a taken-for-granted geometric coordinate net of lines, points, and planes. Preceding a critique also of his own approach, he recognizes that this is also a reason which is becoming increasingly outdated, although it is likely to continue to haunt us as well as human geography.</p

The taxonomy, phylogeny and biostratigraphy of Oligocene and lower Miocene Globoturborotalita is reviewed. Globoturborotalita is a long-ranging genus appearing in the basal Eocene and still present in modern oceans with one living representative G. rubescens. Species attributed to this genus are generally common and cosmopolitan. The following species are recognized as valid: Globoturborotalita barbula Pearson and Wade, Globoturborotalita bassriverensis Olsson and Hemleben, Globoturborotalita brazieri (Jenkins), Globoturborotalita cancellata (Pessagno), Globoturborotalita connecta (Jenkins), Globoturborotalita eolabiacrassata Spezzaferri and Coxall n. sp., Globoturborotalita euapertura (Jenkins), Globoturborotalita gnaucki (Blow and Banner), Globoturborotalita labiacrassata (Jenkins), Globoturborotalita martini (Blow and Banner), Globoturborotalita occlusa (Blow and Banner), Globoturborotalita ouachitaensis (Howe and Wallace), Globoturborotalita paracancellata Olsson and Hemleben n. sp., Globoturborotalita pseudopraebulloides Olsson and Hemleben n. sp., and Globoturborotalita woodi (Jenkins)

Energy issues in sustainable urban wastewater management : Use, demand reduction and recovery in the urban water cycle

No full text
Urban water systems and, in particular, wastewater treatment facilities are among the major energy consumers at municipal level worldwide. Estimates indicate that on average these facilities alone may require about 1% to 3% of the total electric energy output of a country, representing a significant fraction of municipal energy bills. Specific power consumption of state-of-the-art facilities should range between 20 and 45 kWh per population-equivalent served, per year, even though older plants may have even higher demands. This figure does not include wastewater conveyance (pumping) and residues post-processing. On the other hand, wastewater and its byproducts contain energy in different forms: chemical, thermal and potential. Until very recently, the only form of energy recovery from most facilities consisted of anaerobic post-digestion of process residuals (waste sludge), by which chemical energy methane is obtained as biogas, in amounts generally sufficient to cover about half of plant requirements. Implementation of new technologies may allow more efficient strategies of energy savings and recovery from sewage treatment. Besides wastewater valorization by exploitation of its chemical and thermal energy contents, closure of the wastewater cycle by recovery of the energy content of process residuals could allow significant additional energy recovery and increased greenhouse emissions abatement

The Andrews-Olsson identity and Bessenrodt insertion algorithm on Young walls

No full text
We extend the Andrews-Olsson identity to two-colored partitions. Regarding the sets of proper Young walls of quantum affine algebras g(n) = A(2n)((2)),A(2n-1)((2)),B-n((1)),D-n((1)) and D-n+1((2)) as the sets of two-colored partitions, the extended Andrews-Olsson identity implies that the generating functions of the sets of reduced Young walls have very simple formulae: Pi(infinity)(i=1)(1 + t(i) )(ki) where k(i) = 0, 1 or 2, and k(i) varies periodically. Moreover, we generalize Bessenrodt's algorithms to prove the extended Andrews-Olsson identity in an alternative way. From these algorithms, we can give crystal structures on certain subsets of pair of strict partitions which are isomorphic to the crystal bases B(Lambda) of the level 1 highest weight modules V (Lambda) over U-q(g(n)).
