    Markov processes on the path space of the Gelfand–Tsetlin graph and on its boundary

    We construct a four-parameter family of Markov processes on infinite Gelfand–Tsetlin schemes that preserve the class of central (Gibbs) measures. Any process in the family induces a Feller Markov process on the infinite-dimensional boundary of the Gelfand–Tsetlin graph or, equivalently, the space of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(∞). The process has a unique invariant distribution which arises as the decomposing measure in a natural problem of harmonic analysis on U(∞) posed in Olshanski (2003) [44].     A quantization of the harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group

    The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(∞). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski [31]). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(∞). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line; it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form - they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function F12 (Borodin and Olshanski [8] ).In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials - the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function ϕ12.A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). The distribution Q is a natural extension of the Mallows distribution on the finite symmetric group.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    q-exchangeability via quasi-invariance

    For positive q is not 1, the q-exchangeability of an infinite random word is introduced as quasi-invariance under permutations of letters, with a special cocycle which accounts for inversions in the word. This framework allows us to extend the q-analog of de Finetti’s theorem for binary sequences—see Gnedin and Olshanski [Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009) R78]—to general real-valued sequences. In contrast to the classical case of exchangeability (q = 1), the order on ℝ plays a significant role for the q-analogs. An explicit construction of ergodic q-exchangeable measures involves random shuffling of ℕ = {1, 2, …} by iteration of the geometric choice. Connections are established with transient Markov chains on q-Pascal pyramids and invariant random flags over the Galois fields

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
